Find me a real dive in LA!

Looking for a serious Dive Bar in Los Angeles. In the Venice, Culver, Santa Monica region. Not an "LA" dive, a real dive please. People in LA say "oh XYZ is a total dive" and when you get there it's like an upscale sports bar. I'm looking for a real, well, shithole. Dark, wood paneled, cheap beer, strong drinks, grisley old men who have been on the same stool for 35 years. no velvet ropes, no plasma screens, just drinks and drunks. bartenders who understand that a Martini is made of gin not vodka, that jack daniels is whiskey but not bourbon and wouldn't say "and what?" when you ask for said whiskey or bourbon. If you saw the place in Baltimore you'd say "man this is a shithole." they've gotta be out there, but where?

What are some good blogs written by Californians about humanitarian projects in the area? Doctors without Borders is planning a tour of its outdoor educational exhibit A Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and San Diego in October and November. A friend of mine is working for their public-relations department and is looking for California-area blogs to publicize the tour. Know of any?

"Third" Places to increase serendipity near Santa Monica/Brentwood

Ray Oldenburg wrote a book a while back called "The Great Good Place" where he described what he called "Third Places", places with regulars who habitually congregate there to meet new and old friends in a welcoming atmosphere. What places near Santa Monica/Brentwood/West Los Angeles California fit that description? I'd like to avoid places where people are physically in the same place but almost exclusively ignore each other while in front of their laptops.

Subleting in SoCal for the Summer

3 month internship in Santa Monica? OK. Now, where to live? This summer I'll be working for an environmental NGO in Santa Monica, CA. The internship is for about 3 months between mid-June and late August or September. So now that I've got the job, my problem is finding an apartment.

I know very little about LA and Santa Monica. I'm looking for recommendations on a) good places to live and b) an easy way to apartment hunt online.

Ideally, I'd like to sublet in Santa Monica but have no idea if this is really feasible. My main priority is living as close to work as possible, since I dislike driving. I own a bike and can handle a commute as long as the hills aren't too brutal. I don't need much space at all--a studio is just fine. The only major stipulation is that I can't get caught in a lease that is longer than three months. My price range is definitely on the cheap side: if I can keep rent under $1200 that would be great.

So, suggestions?

Looking for a great dentist in Venice beach area or Santa Monica, preferably one who has all the modern technology. Please help! I had a great dentist in Colorado who had all the newest technology at his disposal for dental work. When I moved to NYC the dentist I had was so-so, and his office seemed straight out of the 50's which kind of made me yearn for the high-tech stuff (I'm thinking primarily of the gum-tracing tools where they chart on computers how much your gum-line as receded, which is what the title of this post is in reference to.) Now that I'm living in West LA, I am looking for someone as good as my Colorado dentist.

Also, big plus if you know that they accept Delta Dental insurance.

Thank you!!

Things to do in L.A./Santa Monica?

Things to do in L.A./Santa Monica? I'll be in Santa Monica, Los Angeles for a few days in October. I've never been to California, so what are some of the must-see or must-do things I should do while there? I'd prefer to be as budget-friendly as possible, and touristy is okay as long as it doesn't involve maps to the stars' homes. And since I'm a comics geek, are there any unique or impressive comics or animation shops worth checking out in the area? I will also be sans-automobile.

FM time-shifting

FM time-shiftingfilter: I purchased a Griffin radioshark, and, although a great idea, its FM reception is for crap. It doesn't pick up the one station I listen to all the time -- KCRW -- and my home is just 25 miles from Santa Monica.

Griffin says an external antenna can be plugged into the headphone jack in the back of the unit. Of course, they also say plugging in headphones will serve the same purpose, and still the reception is poor (no improvement). Trouble is: I can't seem to find any external FM antennas on the net that explicitly state they plug into a headphone jack. Is a headphone jack called something else? I've been going down googleholes for hours with no answer.
