Plus-Size, conservative swimwear in San Francisco

Where can I try on plus-size, conservative swimwear in San Francisco? Are there specialty swim/sports shops that carry plus sizes? I am going on vacation Sunday and don't have time to order online and mess around with things possibly not fitting. My ideal garment would be a sleeveless, knee-length wetsuit, but I'm also willing to go with a conservative one-piece and board shorts. No skirt suits. I am a US women's size 16-18ish. This is just for splashing around in the ocean, so it doesn't need any special features.

Rejected Craigslist Roommate = Possible Date?

My housemates and I interviewed several people yesterday for a new roommate. We chose the person whose move-in schedule logistically worked best. However, we got along with all of the interviewees surprisingly well; each one stayed and chatted for at least an hour. I especially got along with two people, and I'd like to contact them again to see if they want to get together as friends, or - especially one of them - as a date. How inappropriate is this? Would you feel flattered or stalked if someone who didn't choose you as a roommate asked you out? [more inside]

Is my San Francisco bathroom required to have an exhaust fan?

SF renter here. The bathroom in my apartment has a window but no fan. The window opens onto an outdoor space that gets little breeze. Recently in the humid weather, my shower has began to smell like mildew even though I've scrubbed it down. This SFGate article says SF bathrooms with showers or tubs are required to have a mechanical fan. Is this only for newly-built houses or does this apply to all homes? [more inside]

San Francisco public transit from SFO to Nob Hill area?

I'm travelling to San Francisco today for a conference. It'll be my first time there, and I'd like to take public transit from the airport to my hotel - the Fairmont, on Mason St. It looks like I can take a train (BART?) from the airport to Powell St., Montgomery St., or Embarcadero, and walk from there. Is it reasonable to ride the train at 7 PM with a largeish rolling carryon bag and a backpack? Which station should I walk from, if I don't mind a bit of a walk but want to avoid overly-sketchy areas?

San Francisco for teenagers.

My younger brother, a rising senior in high school, will be visiting me in the Bay Area next week. We will have 2-3 days to spend in the city (really, any place accessible by Caltrain). I need an itinerary of fun places to check out. The main criteria are that anything you recommend should be easily accessible by public transport, not too remote, and also immediately spectacular for teenage boys and other people without particular interests. Yes: museums with minimal reading, weird architecture, cable cars, great views, robots and video games, and so on. No: major league sports, "funky boutiques," "must-eat restaurants." The rest of our week will be mostly spent outdoors, so indoors is OK. Thanks for suggestions!

Is it better to avoid visiting San Francisco during Outside Lands?

We are hoping to spend a long weekend in San Francisco in August and get married on a Monday at City Hall. We were looking at the weekend of August 10-11, but it looks like the Outside Lands festival is going on that weekend. Is the city going to be crazy that weekend? Will it be hard to find hotels & make restaurant reservations? Will the hotels be more full than usual with partying people? Should we do it the weekend before (August 3-4) instead, or is it likely that there's something else going on that weekend that will make things just as crowded? Any other logistical advice? We are doing a small family wedding - probably 11 people, including us and two small kids. Thanks very much!

Charlie don't surf (but needs to ship a board)

I am in San Francisco for a few days visiting a friend. My friend has a board that needs to be shipped to Texas. I have called the local surf shop (Wise Surf), but they don't have any board boxes at the moment, and won't have any until well after I leave. Is there a service (UPS, FedEx, etc) that will take a board, package and ship it for us? I can't find any such on the Googles. Cost is not a huge issue, we just want to get this done.

Two houses, one lot

I've noticed something kind of unusual in many of the residential houses in San Francisco. Often times there's a primary residence facing the street (for example a three-story Victorian) and then a second, more modern building in the back yard (like a one- or two-story cottage). There's a second street number and usually a little gate to access the back building. It seems like a different family occupies the back unit than the front unit (and the front unit is sometimes further subdivided into what I assume are condos). A bunch of naive questions: [more inside]

Roadblock: Who wants to get down?

Every year for our gift exchange, there's a theme. This year the theme is kind of action - adventure related, think about some of the activities on the Amazing Race. I'd like to give something more "do something" than "get something" this year, given the following parameters:
  • Less than $100
  • Probably within 1 - 2 hours drive of the East bay / Oakland / Walnut Creek, California
  • Gift will be for an individual, but with a family, so family friendly preferred
  • Will mail me a gift certificate / gift card online or via phone.
I'm looking for things like zip lines, running-related, climbing activities, bungee jumping, etc. I don't live in the area so the phone / email / online part is important since I can't go down in person.

San Francisco's greatest portals

SFFilter! I have a friend who has a photography assignment due on Monday -- six photos, with the theme of portals/entrances. They need to take photos of six distinctive entranceways/ doorways/ portals/ passages in San Francisco. Places that open up to amazing, distinctive sights and vistas... possibly even some outdoor locations, garden gates, etc. that are semi-enclosed, and have interesting subjects behind them. They'd especially appreciate Art Deco subjects and locations within walking distance of the downtown. Can the MeFi hivemind recommend some great portals to shoot, with a sense of mystery, wonder, and excitement on what lies beyond?
