Is a hot dog a sandwich? Common sense tells me yes, but people generally seem to say no when I ask them. I'm curious about the official classification of hot dogs, sausages, etc. Are they sandwiches or something else entirely? Is there a regulatory body that covers this type of thing?

Cold cuts for foodies

Healthy/organic/free range cold cuts? Read Omnivore's Dilemma, saw Food, Inc. Horribly frightened of processed meats and refuse to support factory farming. Have been hitting farmer's markets for the last couple of years to get free-range and pastured chicken, beef, and pork. Yet, I love me some sandwich meats. How do I go about getting thin, delicious slices of turkey, roast beef, or ham that have come from humanely raised, safely slaughtered, and preferably local animals? I live in Central Pennsylvania. How does one go about determining how a company processes their meat?

Smells like...

How do I make the tuna sandwich from sandwich places? I hate eating sandwiches at restaurants because I can make 99% of their menu at home. Eating a dip dish pizza, sushi, all sorts of rich thick complex dishes, or even really good french fries are fine because I can't make this kind of stuff at home without specialized equipment. I also don't want to spend two to three hours to prepare something that I will eat in about fifteen minutes.

I am totally prepared to pay whatever restaurants want so they can take the burden of buying the specialized equipment and spending the time making it. No problem.

But when I eat a tuna sandwich, I am totally disgusted with myself. I'm watching them make my sandwich which really doesn't save me time. I'm basically consenting to a 250% markup so I can get the convenience of not making a sandwich.

I hate that.

But I continue to go back to Subway, Jersey Mikes, and other specialty sub places because I LOVE the taste of their tuna sandwiches.

How the hell do they make it?

I use the same breads, condiments, toppings, salads, cheeses, everything....but I still can't recreate their tuna sandwiches at home. I can easily recreate a turkey sandwich, roast beef sandwich, or any other classic subs.

I have used cheaper tuna, I have used albacore tuna, I have used wierd ass Italian tuna that comes in jars. Its all tasty...but it doesn't have the taste that I get from sandwich shops.

When I see them peel that cellophane top off that that plastic bucket at subway with an ice cream scooper, and stick their half-protected arms into that slop my stomach goes "oh no. you ain't gonna eat that ish". But I do. I eat that ish like its the ambrosia of the gods.

What the hell are those secret ingredients in the sandwich slop that makes me keep coming back? Its not just at Subway, its pretty much at any specialty submarine/hoagy/sandwich shop.

I've used all sorts of mayo, chopped celery, spices, dressing...but I have still not gotten it correct.

What is the trade secret?

Thanks guys.

What shall I eat for lunch?

What else can I keep at my desk for making sandwiches? I'm bored of peanut butter and jam. I keep PB and jam at my desk in the office. That way, I can just grab some bread on leaving the house in the morning, and make a sandwich at my desk when I get hungry at lunchtime.

PB and jam are nice, but I tire of them. What other sandwich fillings can I keep *at my desk* without refrigeration. Sweet and savoury both good. I'm vegetarian, but I doubt that's relevant here (meat not being shelf stable, and all that).

How can one learn to be more patient and kind with an elderly family member who has a difficult personality?

How can one learn to be more patient and kind with an elderly family member who has a difficult personality? I have an elderly family member who I've always had a very hard time getting along with. We've always been like oil and water. We just don't mix. She is pretty similar to Tony's mom on the Sopranos: negative, hostile and set in her ways.

However, as she gets older it's come upon family members such as myself to become caregivers. The struggle comes from caring for someone for whom I never cared much and who I feel bad when I'm around.

How can I learn to be above these difficult feelings? I'd like to be more patient and learn to be loving even when I feel that this isn't returned. I'm wondering what has worked for others and if you have any specific techniques or suggestions. Thanks.

Battered Sandwiches?

Where can I get a Monte Cristo sandwich in the East Bay? I can't believe that I've gotten this far in life without learning that people sometimes deep-fry sandwiches without being clapped in irons and shipped to a hardscrabble island in the South Pacific. I must try one of these!

So where in the San Francisco Bay Area, preferably the East Bay, can I get a shining example of this culinary marvel?

Seriously this was a really good sandwich.

Can I patent a sandwich? I may have just invented the best sandwich ever, and before I reveal the recipe I want to know it's safe from those would attempt to misuse it's power for evil. Naturally, I would share it, but I want to protect my invention first. There are only two ingredients but pairing them is pretty rare. Turns out it tastes great. Can a sandwich be patented at all? Does it have to be weird enough before I can? Do I have to commercially exploit it in order to patent it? Is the cost prohibitive for whimsical patents? Is the world ready to accept a vegetarian candidate for the king of sandwiches?

I'm not even hungry and I want one now. I might go to the supermarket for more ingredients even though I don't need any other groceries. It's that good. My mouth is watering thinking about it. It's hard to overstate how good this sandwich was, but I like to think it was art

I could be rich from this. People would take out loans for these babies. We're talking devote your whole life to getting them because nothing taste good in comparison, living in the gutter begging for change to go buy one type good.

Naturally, after becoming independently wealthy I would donate profits to charity and allow certain organizations free use of the recipe, you know, pull a Paul Newman, I mean, there's only so much money one guy needs.

It would be kind of cool to have a patent as a conversation piece. I'm in New Zealand so our patent law might be a bit weird. Is there anyone I can call to get (preferably free) advice from?

And where can I order bulk quantities of cough syrup?

Where can I get a great roast beef sandwich in Boston? The wife and I love the roast beef sandwiches from Bill & Bob's, Kelly's, Jimmy's and even Toula's. Problem is, we live in Roslindale and we don't want to drive all the way to the Saugus, Lynn, Andover, Georgetown, Revere, or Natick to get really good roast beef sandwiches. Are there any really awesome roast beef sandwiches to be had in Boston, Brookline, Newton, Quincy, Milton or the near South Shore? I know about Chowhound and Yelp, but I'm looking for recommendations from MeFites based on their own experiences.

Cheap and portable signs for a protest?

I'll be participating in my first ever protest later this month. What is an economical way to make hand-held signs and sandwich boards which are sturdy enough to survive a day of protesting on possibly windy streets, but also light and compact enough to transport easily? I'll be participating in a protest on the street in New York City later this month.

I'd like to cobble together some hand-held signs and sandwich boards for myself and others to use.

Since many of the participants will be traveling in from out of state to attend, I'd also like to be able to easily transport a bunch of signs/boards with me on trains and subways so that I can give them to others to use.

My initial thoughts are for foam core sheets with laser printed paper glued to them, using small pvc pipe for hand-held signs and linking two sheets together with plastic cable ties for sandwich boards.

Any better ideas out there?

I want my home-made microwave foods to be crisp, but how?

I want relatively crisp reheated food from the microwave. Can can I buy or make something to do this for me, like that silvery-coated paperboard that comes with frozen foods? Many bread-related frozen foods come with microwave crisping devices - frozen personal pizzas have round trays, hot pockets have wrap-around sleeves, and Lean Cuisine paninis come with the "revolutionary grilling tray". I know I can put together a healthier, cheaper melt sandwich or mini pizza if I make it myself, but the only source of heat in my office kitchen is a microwave. Without the magic crisper thing, I get soggy, unappetizing food.

Using google I've discovered that these coated paperboard things are called "susceptors" and I've found a couple companies that manufacture them for the food industry, but so far nobody seems to sell them directly to the consumer. Do you know where I could buy them? Or, can I make something at home to help crisp up my microwaved foods? I would experiment with aluminum foil, but I'm nervous about setting my kitchen on fire.

I've seen the Waveware Microwave Crisping Dish, but the reviews don't inspire much confidence. If you know anything more about this or similar products, I'd love to hear it.

How to Stuff a Wild Panini

I have a Snackster. It makes yummy sandwiches that look like this. More yummy sandwiches are wanted. There have been a few sandwich posts here, but none that deal specifically with stuffed sandwiches and panini type sandwiches, which is what I'm after.

In addition to grilled cheese of every kind imaginable, I've made Reubens with great success, and have done a sort of Panera artichoke and turkey and caramelized onion sandwich, and have made mini calzones of sauces and cheese. What else can I try? Yep, I know how to google for recipes - I'm looking for sandwiches that you yourself have known and loved personally. My Snackster is hot and looking for action!

Where can a guy get a good turkey sandwich (the carved-right-off-the-bone kind) in NYC? When I first moved here, I used to go to delis and ask for a turkey sandwich. They'd carve hot, chunky, juicy bits of turkey right off the carcass and pile them high on rye bread. Now most of those places seem to be serving thin deli slices. Boring!

I want a REAL sandwich!
squish! chomp! yum!

Help me squish my food! I've got a thing for squished food, especially sandwiches. I'll make a sandwich and knead it with my fist to make it very flat and dense. I've always wished for a simple roller device with a crank that I could feed sandwiches into to get max flattening capabilities. Bonus points for ideas on compressing my food into dense cubes (much like a trash compactor). I've been doing this with bread since I was a kid.

Sometimes, I sit around and fantasize about compressing an entire salad into a tiny dense cube or a sandwich into an extremely dense and flat brick and eating it by taking little nibbles. If I could do this, I would be the happiest human in the universe!

How could I best achieve these goals?

Tuna sandwich longevity?

I made a tuna sandwich for lunch and left it at home. Will it still be edible? I made a tuna sandwich - the tuna fish is mixed with mayo and pickles, and the sandwich is in a closed ziploc bag... I prepared it about 7:30am and wonder whether it will be safe to eat at 6 tonight when I get home. I live 15+ miles from work so driving back at lunch time would cost about as much in gas as getting something at Quizno's.

I just ate a peanut butter and honey sandwich on soft white bread. The bread on the honey side developed a kind of rough texture, almost like the bread had been lightly toasted on one side. Not unpleasant, but kind of odd. I noticed this when I was a kid and I've always wondered about it, and just now realized that someone here might know what's going on (I grew up in the South, and I have been known to eat molasses and butter sandwiches - the rough-texture thing doesn't happen with molasses, only honey. I don't know about other sugary syrup products).

Sandwichs!

Who loves sandwiches? I do! But I'm tired of sandwichs designed in the vacuum of my mind. My question is thus: What are some great sandwichs? I'm also curious about sandwich tips and techniques that make any sandwich, or most sandwichs all the better. Bestow unto me your sandwichy wisdoms, Metafilter!

My own private Guantanamo

What recourse do fathers who receive Massachusetts 209A restraining ? From what I can gather, a woman can say absolutely anything and get a restraining order imposed. I got one yesterday taking custody away from me for alleged threat of violence I made. At the time I was over 200 miles away. I didn't think I was that powerful.

It looks like all I can do is wait for the hearing in about a week. I haven't even received a copy of the affadavit saying what I am supposed to have done.

I sent an email to my children this morning trying to tell them that everything would be okay and was rewarded with a call from the local police saying that I was going to be arrested.

Luckily, I have a good attorney who told me to lay low and stay away from the town so I didn't have to spend any time in the local accommodations. (Sandwhich, Massachusetts)

My lawyer says we have a very good chance of getting the whole thing overturned in a week, but in the meanwhile, I can't talk with my children to tell them what is happening or respond to the as yet non-existent charge.

What can I do? I am not looking for "Sit down and set a spell" responses. It galls me that I have to wait one minute to go to the court to have this nonsense overturned.

What is even more galling is that my attorney tells me that even if the judge finds that the accusation was made in bad faith and is a total fabrication, they won't go after the accuser.

What a country!

When did Peanut Butter and Tuna become one?

"You got peanut butter in my tuna!" Or maybe "You got tuna in my peanut butter!" Where does this phrase come from? I know it's a take of the old Reeses Peanut Butter cup commerical, but it has been used with peanut butter and tuna with strange frequency this past 2 weeks or so. Where is it from? I know I just saw it on a childrens' show where their picnic was ruined. I think it might have been Rugrat-like characters, though doubt it was Rugrats since my son doesn't care for them.

I thankfully have not seen the variation "I've got your peanut butter in my tuna."

Please help. This truly is driving me insane.

A McMuffin by any other name...

What's a good, non-copyright-infringing alternate name for what is essentially an egg mcmuffin? My girlfriend's coffee shop is replacing their breakfast burritos with english muffin sandwiches that have egg, ham cheese or other similar combinations. What should term should she use to describe them? She also wants to avoid the word breakfast as much as possible. Extra kudos for kreativity!
