Geology toy with different colored layers of sand in water between glass

When I was a kid (UK 80s), a friend had a sort of geology toy. It was two pieces of glass (7 by 4 inches) sandwiching a thin layer of water and different colored sand. The sand would fall into different layers like strata when you shook it up. Anyone know what I'm talking about or what it is called? I'm looking to buy one for Xmas. [more inside]

Does sand suspended in big waves affect surfers at all?

Calling moderate to biggish wave surfers: Every time I watch a surfing video, I always notice the amount of sand suspended in the water column - aka at 1:11 of this video. I know there's a lot of other things going on for a surfer to think about, but I've always wondered if surfers feel or notice sand grains in any way. [more inside]

Odd question about flip flops...

We are currently vacationing on the Gulf in Alabama and have noticed something odd. We are staying at a very large condo complex and a significant number of people leave their flip flops/shoes at the end of the dock before they slog with their stuff to the waterfront. This isn't a short walk and some of these shoes are expensive. It's odd to me that people wouldn't just wear their footwear to their claimed spot on the beach. Is this a regional thing? I've seen a few pairs left at the end of the boardwalk on my native Georgia and Florida beaches but never in these numbers. Any clue? Thanks.

Where can I buy real sand near Boston?

We need sand for our daughter's sandbox - I think it takes like 17 50 pound bags. However, based on research we are all worked up now about the horribleness of the "Fake" sand from ground up quartz - due to inhalation issues. However, we know there can be an issue with real sand as well. So I am looking for somewhere that can provide safe real sand - so probably real sand that has been washed to remove the very small particles. This type of thing can be ordered online but it is hugely expensive. I could call around to every landscape company but I know many are business only, have huge minimums or simply wouldn't want to talk to the type of sand I need (which is probably river sand or beach sand).

Effective salt alternatives for sidewalks

Hello, fellow salt-deprived victims of this over-generous winter! I am fanatical about clearing my front walk, but my salt supplies are almost depleted and both salt and the usual alternatives are out of stock in my Toronto neighbourhood. In addition to dedicated shovelling and attacking residual ice with the appropriate metal tools, what can I do to fight problems like a thin slick of black ice that results from the occasional melt-friendly temperatures we get? Why is there "sand" in the pipes?

Plumbing puzzle: my neighbor has what looks like find sand which collects in her *hot water* eventually clogging metal screens on faucets, etc. The obvious answer is that this is some sort of mineral precipitate as the system has been flushed several times and a filter installed on the water coming into the house. What is causing this precipitate in the hot water and why doesn't this happen with my hot water which is the same town water on the same street (same pipes) that is going into her house? Pomp, or schoolyard sand-tackling

There was a game I played in elementary school which we called "Pomp." At my school we had a sand field. Weird, I know. One guy would stand in front of everybody and yell "Pomp" and then everybody'd charge towards the other side of the sand and the 'pomp'-yelling guy would try to tackle somebody. Kind of a smearthequeer thing. [more inside]
