I'm going home! (for 2 weeks)

ExpatFilter: American Expat returning home for 2 weeks. What should I do while I am home?

BonusFilter: Help me decide what to do with all my worldly posessions that didnt go Expat with me. I'm an American Expat whose been living in the Far/Middle East for the last 3 years. I'm returning home for 2 weeks for vacation and to visit family and friends whom I havent seen since I left.

2 Part Question:

1 - What things should I do in my hometown (San Antonio, Tx) since I will physically be there? One example is getting my Drivers License updated as it will be expiring next year. I'll also be getting a safety deposit box at my bank to store my important papers (currently being stored in a firebox at my parent's house). Fun suggestions welcome too.

2 - Before I left, I basically threw all my junk that wouldnt fit in my luggage into a 10'x20' climate controlled storage unit and left. Most of this stuff is not worth shipping overseas (3BR House worth of furniture, small appliances, books, old clothes, etc). What should I do with it all? My first thought was donating to a Veterans group but the ones my parents contacted all said they really only wanted money instead of household goods. Goodwill is my last resort as they will come and get it all. Any other recommendations? Tax deductible preferred but not required.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Hot or not?

What was the hottest official temperature measured in San Antonio, Texas each year since the 1950s? Today San Antonio had its 45th day of 100+ degree weather this year. I remember years in the 1970s when SA had no 100 degree days at all, but a friend doesn't believe it.

Hi I am going to San Antonio this weekend and wanted some suggestions of where to go and do that's kind of inexpensive but still worth an amazing experience.

San Antonio this weekend: stuff to do, restaurants, etc. Tell me all! Driving up on Sat, driving back on Mon. What should we do? Where should we stay? Where should we eat?

Young couple looking to do fun stuff to do, not uber-expensive, but it doesn't have to be on the super-cheap either. Priority on cool local places to eat and interesting things to see.

Where should I get a tattoo?

TattooFilter: I live in San Antonio, Texas. I'm going to be in New York for the first week of April. Should I get a tattoo while I'm in New York, or just wait and get one in San Antonio (or Austin)? (Multiple questions inside! I've never gotten a tattoo before!) So, I'm fairly certain I know what I want. Max, from the book Where the Wild Things Are, with a banner that says "MISCHIEF!" The thing is, I want a tattoo artist to redraw Max in his/her specific style, and not try to copy the images from the book. Is this even something a good custom tattoo artist would do?

I'm leaning toward Daniel Santoro at NY Adorned (I found him by reading old tattoo askmes). The thing is, I'm only going to be in New York for a week. Is that enough time to talk to an artist about what I want, have him draw it, and get the tattoo?

I'm open to the possibility of just getting this tattoo closer to home. I live more or less an hour from Austin, so if anyone has any suggestions of tattoo artists over there, that would be fantastic. If anyone has any suggestions for great artists in San Antonio, that would be good too.

I'm excited about getting this tattoo, but I'm also very aware of the fact that it's going to be on me forever, so I want it to be as incredible as possible.

Need an Accountant in the Alamo City

Can anyone recommend a good accountant in San Antonio, Tx who will do my taxes and not charge an arm and a leg? I am an American living overseas, so I need an accountant familiar with the foreign earned income exclusion, foreign housing exclusion and eligibilty for a Roth IRAs (i'm VERY close to the income limit).

Oh, and I messed up on my 401k last year and had too much taken out. I've already asked my 401k administrator for a refund of the excess, but they'll need to help me with that as well.

I've gotten one referral for an accountant in SA but he wanted $800 which seems a little high. I don't feel comfortable just sending my stuff to H&R block (or equivalent), I'd like a licensed accountant to take care of it all for me.

Thanks!

P.S. I'd like an accountant in San Antonio because that is where all my family is.

Headed for Castroville...

Where do people in San Antonio look for furnished, short-term rentals, sublets, or house shares? I am looking for a ten-week rental in western San Antonio or Castroville, TX. Craigslist is crammed full of realtor spam, and there are no separate "by-owner" listings. The San Antonio paper is full of realtor spam as well. Castroville-specific information would be spectacular.

San Antonio Software

Are there any good software companies in San Antonio? I'm a software engineer, used to the progressive attitudes of west coast companies. Now, for various family reasons, I'm living in San Antonio. I've interviewed at a couple of places, but within 10 minutes I could tell these places were not for me. (One of them had me show up at 7am for the interview, for example. And this was a mandatory daily start time.)

Are there any west-coast style (for lack of a better term) software companies in San Antonio?

Possible move to San Antonio/Austin, what can I expect? My wife and I are currently in Los Angeles but are considering a move to either San Antonio or Austin. We're in our late 20's, early 30's and are ready to get out of Los Angeles. I work as a web developer and she is a therapist. I'm currently interview for jobs in each city and though I've been to both, it's hard to get an honest feeling for the place without actually living there.
hotel in san antonio for under $100

I need a hotel (or motel) for under $100 for June 23-25 in San Antonio, Texas. I have browsed through lots of hotels on expedia, orbitz and the like, but I could really use some firsthand experience or reviews. I'm looking for something cheap, but preferably newish and clean, in a good area.

I *have* been to San Antonio before, but they're usually trips centered around shopping, and with my whole family. I only really know the area near the airport, and are not really sure about other areas. This time I'm going with my boyfriend and another couple, to a concert at the AT&T center, so closeness to the place could be good, but not a must.

If you'd like to throw in some suggestions of what we could do, apart from the concert and some shopping, I'd appreciate that.

I have two pairs of tickets in two different sections for a concert at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Tx. Where should I sit? My boyfriend bought two pairs of tickets and we now have to choose where to sit. Neither of us have ever been to the AT&T Center, so I was hoping that someone who has been there can tell me what the better seats are. The seating chart for the concert can be seen here. We have two tickets in the F6 section, and two in the 108 section. I'm not sure which rows, but I can ask. By the way, the concert's in June.

Places for queers to dance and hang out in San Antonio?

Where's a nice place for two queer women to hang out, eat, or dance in San Antonio this weekend? We're staying at a hotel about half an hour west of downtown, and we'll have a car. We're in our 30's. Not big drinkers or clubbers. We enjoy almost any kind of music, including country. Mixed male/female and queer/straight places are fine. A good place for salsa would be especially nice. Friday and Saturday mid to late evenings are open, as are Sunday brunchtime and maybe Saturday afternoon.

If you know of any such places, please let me know what the usual level of dress is, the best time to go, and anything else useful.

Bonus question: if any of the bazillion straight relatives also in town for this family reunion wants to go out dancing too, is there a place that would be good for all of us?

Why does San Antonio, Texas host the largest Martin Luther King, Jr. march? San Antonio doesn't exactly have the largest black population. Of course the MLK march "serves" to show support for all races, but it just seems odd that it's so large in San Antonio (100,000+ people).

Can anyone recommend an affordable hotel near the Riverwalk in San Antonio? In May (07) I will be attending a conference at the Westin on the Riverwalk and while work will cover the 2 nites I am there for the conference I am planning on spending 2-3 days on with my wife on a mini vacation. The over $200/night price of the Westin doesn't fit our budget. I am currently looking at hotels near the area but wondered if anyone here had a suggestion based on experience or proximity to attractions.

My rose of San Antone

Can anyone recommend any good restaurants and interesting attractions in San Antonio? I'll be in San Antonio for about four days for a conference, and hope to have some free time to do some good eatin' and sightseein'. I've been to S.A. several times, but not for years and not as a semi-rational adult, so I'd love to get your suggestions.

I found this list on the website of the San Antonio Visitors' Bureau (sort of a greatest-hits kind of page, but some potentially interesting stuff on it), so I guess I'm looking for something a little off the beaten track. I will also most definitely be revisiting the great Buckhorn Museum, which when last I saw it was in shabbier quarters.

I'm mostly interested in the following:
- good Mexican food
- good barbecue
- bookstores
- interesting, weird local attractions.

I will be staying on the campus of Trinity University, and I'm not certain where that is in relation to downtown. I will not have a car, though a friend may be renting one for a day. (We may head out to the Salt Lick if we have the time.) Walkable or bus-able sites would be best.

Thanks!

Commuting between Austin and San Antonio?

How feasible is it to commute between Austin and San Antonio, TX? I just got a great job offer from a company in San Antonio, TX. My significant other (we're pretty much engaged-to-be-engaged) has decided he wants to attend UT-Austin graduate school in the fall. Furthermore, he just can't live without me. He'd also like to live relatively close to campus, since he reasons he'll be keeping non-standard hours. I've never really worked farther than 10 minutes away from home before, and my impression is that traffic in San Antonio is "pretty erratic", especially on the 410 loop.

I'd like to hear from people who have, perhaps, made this commute daily before. What about if we lived in between? (maps.google is showing San Marcos as about a third of the way closer) Will I shortly lose the will to live (as I suspect), or is it a pretty common commute? FWIW, I'm currently living in LA, so I have a pretty high bar for "bad traffic."
