Moving to Boerne/San Antonio next week. Looking for two things: cool places/shops/places to visit; and web sites.
I want to know about the one cemetery that has the coolest old statues, the park that offers the best secret hideouts, the store that has the weirdest hand made tchotchkes. Two particular items of interest: fabric stores (NOT Joann's - I want the cool, local place); and a place to get very nice wood for woodworking, since the hubby likes to make stuff, including guitars. Music stores would also be welcome. I'm an interior designer, and would love an introduction to the "to the trade" stores/warehouses in the area, too.
Web sites that will help me get to know the area. Especially as I'm a stay at home mom, and I'd love to meet other parents and find cool places to take my kids. These could be business web sites, organizations, blogs, you name it.
For the record, I'm not religious at all and I lean very liberal, so super conservative stuff is definitely not what I'm after.
Thanks, mefites!

We're a couple of poor students who'll be travelling through San Antonio on our anniversary, and we'd like to get a nice memorable lunch or dinner there without going broke. We don't much care how formal it is — super-fancy and super-casual are both okay, as is anything in between — as long as the atmosphere is basically pleasant and cozy. (Bonus points for friendly neighborhood-ish joints, or places with good people-watching.) But the main thing is we're looking for the sort of restaurant where you sigh happily after the meal and say "man, I haven't had an XYZ that good in a
long time."

Where do people in San Antonio look for furnished, short-term rentals, sublets, or house shares? I am looking for a ten-week rental in western San Antonio or Castroville, TX. Craigslist is crammed full of realtor spam, and there are no separate "by-owner" listings. The San Antonio paper is full of realtor spam as well. Castroville-specific information would be spectacular.
