I'm interested in sampling with hardware. What are some good entry-level samplers with decent sequencers? What are some low-end options for a limited budget? What older models might be worth it for the price? [more inside]

I fell in love with "Frontier Psychiatrist" by The Avalanches all over again this week. Can you recommend similar songs or artists, particularly with that amusing juxtaposition of voice samples as part of the track? [more inside]

Music Instrument Filter: I know what I want but not what it's called or if it precisely exists. I want something that samples and loops over itself, overdubbing or "stacking" the samples as it goes. I want it to accept MIDI so that it knows when to start the loop again. And I don't want it to require a computer. [more inside]

Anyone know what hip-hop song sampled from Henry Mancini's score for the Pink Panther? Not the main sax theme, but a recurring vibraphone-type riff...

I'm a big fan of mashups, but only recently wondered what software people use to make them. Specifically things like:
A Night at the Hip Hopera, The Grey Album and more recently the Scummer Mix (scroll down for link)
Vocal stripping, beat matching, sampling, the ubiquitous handclap track... Help me AskMe, where do I begin?

At the Frankfurt Musikmesse '04, Powercore did a demo of some of it's latest Whizzbang equipment to let DJ's apply less-fake sounding filters to music samples and other fun things. The guy who did the presentation, Jim Motley,
seems like an absolute spaz, and it's kinda fun to see how into it he is. Here's for the question - does anyone recognize the music that he's messing with in there? It seems like a British version of Ozomatli, which could be a fun thing.
I can't get this outta my head. Anyone recognize it?
Here's Jim, freakin' out.

A couple of years ago, Natalie Cole sang a duet with her dead dad via tape splicing. Digital audio sampling has come far. But, does the sampling technology exist to create a whole new songs (e.g. new Frank Sinatra sing new songs)?

A few weeks I had to listen to a drunken guy drone on about hip-hop. There was one thing he said that caught my interest. He mentioned that there were tracks based on Robert Johnson samples. So what are the tracks and who does them?
