Name that mid-90's techno/trance/ambient track I half remember-filter. Memory jogged by the U2 thread, I'm trying to remember a song.
The song prominently features a sample of the announcer at Woodstock saying, "It’s a free concert from now on.

What film soundtrack (or radio show?) is being sampled in the Cabaret Voltaire song "The Arm of the Lord"? The relevant sample starts about 40 seconds in. I'm not asking about the bit of Manson interview footage at the beginning of the track. Thanks!

Help me retro-fy my music

Help me write retro-styled video game music! I've finally found a system that works for me, but its supported music formats are OGG - which is nice, but too heavyweight for the kind of retro feel I want - and MOD/XM, which has definite potential... I'm trying to go for a sort of classic 16-bit feel, and tracked audio formats seem like the obvious way to go here (since they're basically what the SNES used). The thing about MODs and XM files is that they depend on instrument samples, and I've been scouring the net looking for sources. Is there any good source for reliable low-fi instrument samples that sound appropriately video-gamey? I've seen soundfonts taken from various games, but I feel a bit odd using an existing game's instrument set, and the other soundfonts I've seen are these high-end professional-type things that are similarly no good for my purposes. What I really want is just a set of about 20-30 different basic instrument noises, all free to use - generic brass, generic strings, a bass, a flute, a handful of percussion noises, things like that, in WAV format if possible (or at least some form where I won't need a special soundfont librarian program to get at them). But where would I find such a thing?

Statistics on the entire population

How does statistical analysis differ when analyzing the entire population rather than a sample? I need to do some statistical analysis on legal cases. I happen to have the entire population rather than a sample. I'm basically interested in the relationship between case outcomes and certain features (e.g., time, the appearance of certain words or phrases in the opinion, the presence or absence of certain issues).

Should I do anything different than I would if I were using a sample? For example, is a p-value meaningful in this kind of case?

If it matters, the population is large (many thousands of cases) and spans several years.

Is there an effective and easy to use website for writers to post writing samples? I'm looking for something like Monster or Career Builder for creative types. I'm also looking for something with which other Mefites have had some measure of success. I am aware that Craigslist and Elance function much in this way, but both have been ineffective for what I am searching. Thanks in advance to all.

Where's this sound clip Scarface used originally from? - 'I got my double-barreled shotgun, the one I call Molly, and I crawled out of the house army style with the rifle cradled in both arms. "Alright", I said, "Just hold it right there - don't move." And I walked up on him with the shotgun. And I cocked both barrels of the shotgun on him, because I had double aughts in it.' That's at the end of Scarface's song "Sorry For What".
Okay, just spent a week in Avignon, and now either my memory sucks or my Googling does. Or both. Anyway, twice late at night on one of the local French TV stations (no satellite cable, so not MTV) I saw a wonderfully ridiculous music video. Now I can't find it anywhere. Here's all I remember: pretty much total Eurocheese dance tune. Chorus sung by white guy in a suit belting out what I think was the phrase "AND I LIKE IT!" while the nakedly sampled riff from "Smoke on the Water" played. Then they replayed the riff for a while while various hot chicks played air guitar as the camera zoomed in and out. Please help me find this gloriously stupid song so I can quickly become tired of it. Link to a video would be great.

What drum machine / sample set / sequencer did the Jesus and Mary Chain use to get the distinctive drum sounds on the song "Head On" from the Automatic album? I like recreating songs in GarageBand, but I find the included software instruments for drums to be limited. Currently I'm remaking "Head On" by the Jesus and Mary Chain, and I want to get the drums sounding a lot closer to the actual recording than the standard Rock Kit will let me.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to purchase/download a new software instrument that contains the samples used by the Reid brothers for that song, but I have no idea how to start looking for it. My google-fu does nothing but tell me that yes, they used a drum machine. I have access to an old 808 sample set, so I know it's not a stock one of those. O almighty hive mind, please help me!

Who's the woman speaking on NWA's "Gangsta Gangsta"?

Who is the woman sampled speaking on NWA's "Gangsta Gangsta"? She says "hopin' you sophisticated motherfuckers here what I have to say", "he'll fuck up you and yours - and anything that gets in his way", and "he'll just call you a lowlife motherfucker and talk about your funky ways."

I've checked http://www.the-breaks.com/ and the samples section on "Straight Outta Compton's" Wikipedia page.

I remember at Lollapalooza '93 in Los Angeles, the sound guys played the source of those samples in between bands. It was like a series of speeches by a woman. I'd really like to hear it in its entirety but I've never been able to find it.

Who originally said: I live for drugs. It's great. Just lately I freaked out on acid. I freaked out very very badly.

What is the source of the "I freaked out very, very badly -- I freaked out on acid" sample used by Thrill Kill Kult and Meat Beat Manifesto? This question came up a few years ago, and was answered. Unfortunately, the answer was incorrect. That thread is now closed. I eventually found the Capitol LSD album on ebay, paid $40 for it, and listened to the damn thing. It's pretty cool and all, but it does not contain that dialog snippet. Boo.

So I am still looking. I've been trying to find this for about 15 years. Someone must know!

Meat Beat Manifesto's "Acid Again" contains the following:

Question: Are you really happy?

Answer: I'm happier than I've ever been. I'm not happy. I'm not happy at all, really. Or I'm very sad. I'm not happy. I'm still fat. I don't feel very pretty, I really don't.

Question: You know a lot about drugs...

Answer: Oh, I live for drugs. It's great. Just lately I freaked out on acid. I freaked out very very badly. Now I don't think I'll ever taken acid again and before I thought that was the best thing in the world. I never want it again. Never acid again.

My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult's "Daisy Chain for Satan" contains a few additional snippets from the interviewee such as "I'm the white rabbit," "My friends turn me on," and "I could never afford it, I would never buy drugs."

Google does not have the answer to this question. Trust me on that. So this is going to require someone who knows the answer but has not yet entered it into any of the tubes on the internets.

I don't think the people in the band even know. But someone does... Are you out there?

I don't want to have Jack Dangers nightmares...

What was this Meat Beat Manifesto song with a long voice sample talking about prison life? A long time ago, I had a cassette of MBM's "Storm the Studio," and the aforementioned song was on it. I lost it, or it was stolen, or something (long before CD burners became cheap enough for anyone to buy, or else, well, you know...) A while back I bought the CD version of Storm the Studio and it had every track I remembered from the tape on it except my favorite song - what was that all about?! And what was this song called? And which CD is it (really) on that I can order and listen to it over and over?

If it helps I remember the song titles were versions of each other like "God O.D. Part I" "God O.D. Part II, God O.D. Part III" and "Strap Down Part I," "Strap Down Part II" etc.,

If I remember right it also had a chorus of guy-voices shouting "gods of war! gods of war!" (or maybe it was "dogs of war! dogs of war!") toward the end of the song.

What is Prefuse 73 sampling?

In the song "Trains on Top of the Game" (from the album One Word Extinguisher), Prefuse 73 samples about 15 seconds of jingly music that sounds like it might have originally come from an arcade or something, although it doesn't quite sound like video game music. Where is it from? The sample kicks in 57 seconds in. You can also hear it halfway through the audio sample for the song on Amazon. I've tried googling, but haven't found anything useful.

Looking for a sampler/looper/track recorder for OSX. I want to make my own version of Jay-Z's The Black Album using the Jay-Z construction set (yes I know we've had enough versions of TBA...) so I am looking for a program for OSX that i can feed MP3's into and grab segments, then loop, speed up/down, layer tracks, etc.

I don't think Garage Band works with MP3's and this sort of sampling, and I don't want something as heavy as Pro Tools.

Where else have I heard the Hijack flute loop?

Where else have I heard the Hijack flute sample? There is a flute sample from Herbie Mann's song Hijack that was used in the Beatnuts' Watch Out Now and subsequently in Jennifer Lopez's Jenny From The Block.

When I first heard the J-Lo song, I remember thinking "Great. Why'd they have to take that great flute loop and ruin it for me?" But now, I can't remember at all where I might have heard it before Jenny From The Block. I wasn't aware of the Beatnuts song until I started researching this on the interwebz and I'm pretty sure I wasn't thinking of the Herbie Mann original. So, my question is: What other songs (possibly remixed?) have used that flute sample from Hijack?

legality of sampling of "Annie" with special needs kids

another copyright/fair use question: making a version of "Annie" with a cast of non-verbal developmentally disabled kids, using the soundtrack and some dialogue from 1982 film version, what are the egal issues? this is for my girlfriend, she is a teacher of kids with various medical issues (CP and the like) at a non-profit private school, all confined to wheelchairs and non-verbal. she very much wants to make a movie starring them and "Annie" seemed like a great idea. as they cannot sing or speak even using the movie soundtrack and dialogue seems like an excellent idea. but we are unsure of the legality of it, playing the movie song or dialogue over the images she shots.
also is it possible to use short video clips from the film, 10 seconds or less in length? i realize the length does not matter really, but that they are short might.

the total film would probably run around 1/2 hour at most, just doing certain scenes.

she would like to possibly make and sell dvds of the final version at cost to the parents also. no money would be made by any of this.
ideally it would be seen beyond the school to show what this population is capable of.

from what i can gather googling and searching MeFi it seems this is not exactly square legally, they would need to pay royalties to Columbia Pictures, but how does one find out how much that is and who to contact?

i am guessing she should contact a lawyer but i wanted to try to get some information first if it is even an option.

I'm looking for Star Trek communicator sample in .wav or .mp3 Ideally I'd like one similar to the one found 35 seconds into this commercial... it's a bit longer than your normal more common communicator clip and I've heard it in other places recently (The Daily Show on 16 Jan).
