Would you be shocked if I changed into something more comfortable?

Where in San Francisco can I get my hair set to look like a 1930s movie star? Any other tips on a 1930s boudoir look would be appreciated, too. I'm attending a costume where the directive was to embody the 1930s. I'm not too excited about enacting a depression-era housewife so I decided to go to the opposite extreme: Jean Harlow. I have mid-length blonde hair and I'd like to get it styled and set in the sort of wavy glam style that she had. Or barring that, I'd go for a Veronica Lake look, even though that's not quite the right era. There's no way I can do this myself so are there any salons that can do old-fashioned set and style hair-dos?

I already have a great silk nightgown and am making a pair of marabou slippers. I need to find a good bed jacket or robe and then any and all other accessories (long pearl strands? a big old white mink stole?). Any other thought are appreciated.

Help me with my hair color.

Help me with my hair color. My natural color is a flat, cool brown. I use L'Oreal Feria Brazilian brown (bronzed brown) and have been quite pleased with the results. However, I do notice that over time the ends of my hair look much lighter than the newer hair growth--even after the newer growth has been colored. The ends take on a brighter "bronzed" color than the rest of the hair, which is a subtler bronzed color. It doesn't look entirely unnatural, but I would prefer to have my hair a more consistent color from root to tip.

Hence my question--are the ends lighter because they have *faded* or are they lighter because they are porous and grab onto more color? (I have heard stylists say that because the ends are more porous the color can become "muddy"). In other words, how can I correct this? Is the solution to re-dye the ends or to leave the ends alone and just refresh the newer growth?

Also, is Feria a semipermanent color or a permanent color? How damaging is it likely to be?

Lastly, are there any rules I should follow when coloring? My hairdresser said to only apply it to the new growth, but I always feel that the rest of my hair is fading and could benefit from a color boost...however, I don't want to damage my hair by repeatedly dying it.

Do Home Laser Hair removal devices work?

Home laser hair removal devices? Has anyone tried one that works? There are quite a few back questions advocating laser hair removal as the most permanent solution. The cost is prohibitive, and regular salon appointments are problematic for me. But having said that waxing costs about £80 pm on average. I've seen devices advertised for home laser hair removal at about £100 to £200.
Does anyone have any experience?
(FWIW I have the pale skin and dark hair which is said to be the most sucessful combo for laser)

Budget haircuts worth it?

SuperCuts/Fantastic Sam's/Rudy's/Hairmasters/ZeroZero - economical choice for a stylish haircut, or potential follicular nightmare? I need a haircut, a dramatic one, but I am stone broke right now. I want to go from hair that's about 1/3 way down my back, nicely layered, to hair that's only about as long as the bottom of my earlobes, which I'd still like layered.

My real question is - am I REALLY getting a much better haircut if I pay $50 than if I pay $20-25 at a place like Supercuts? I've had about 5 shitty $50-60 cuts in a row, so I tend to think not, but maybe I'm just unlucky.

Is going to a place that charges so little for a cut a mistake waiting to happen, or have I been brainwashed by the fancy salon industry? How can they charge so little when other places charge so damn much?

PS - I'm in Seattle if anyone has a specific cheapass hair place/stylist they swear by.

Unique Hostess Gift

A friend is hosting an event at her house tomorrow night, a kind of "salon" evening featuring a few authors, wine, and conversation. I'd like to get her some kind of hostess gift, but not the usual bottle of wine, since we'll have wine galore, and not the Bath & Body Works gift bag, since she's not that kind of gal. Any ideas?
