Hello,
I bought something from an online store from a business in Illinois.
I am in Australia, which does not require sales tax to be paid on items bought from overseas for less that $1000.
When I realised the Illinois website had charged me sales tax, I pointed it out to them.
They claim that:
'If you purchase something in Illinois, and that is where our "store" is
you will be charged sales tax.'
I don't think that is correct. Is it?
Do you know of a clear authoritative document online I can send them a link to?
Thank you

How do you handle the labyrinth of New York State sales tax? I'm launching an online business that sells goods (some clothes, some non-clothes). We're located in New York State. We need to collect tax in New York State... gorey details inside.

Sales tax question: We hired someone to print our wedding invitations - we did all the design. The person we hired does this as a small side business in addition to her day job. We got the invoice for the printing today and there is a charge for sales tax. She is in the same state as us (CA) but in a different city. I was surprised at the charge - is this normal? I'm not sure what the status of her business is, if it's a sole proprietorship or a corporation or what.

Have securities (stocks, bonds, etc.) ever been treated the same as physical goods in terms of buying and selling them? I am specifically thinking of sales taxes, but knowing about other aspects is welcome as well.

Is there any easy way to find out the tax rate for different stores? For example, there are probably a dozen branches of some "big box" store within a 20 mile radius of where I live, but all are in different tax jurisdictions. For a big ticket item, finding the one where the tax rate is lowest could easily justify the trip. But how do you find it?

I know you're not my accountant but... the small company I work for wants to set up an e-commerce area on our website to sell books. We're just talking about one or two specialized titles at the moment to just a few customers. Now the question of Internet sales tax has arisen.

I'm thinking about buying a new car in the next year. I live in Seattle, Washington, where the sales tax is about 8.8%, but I visit Oregon frequently, where there is no sales tax. Would there be any drawbacks to buying the car in Oregon to avoid the sales tax? I would still register and insure it in Washington.
