I am looking to help someone I know sell their company. It is a small business based in NYC that places consultants in IT positions, mainly with large financial institutions. I am wondering what the best venues are for advertising such a business. If anyone has knowledge or experience with this, please share. Thank you!
Our 2004 Chevy Venture minivan (120,000 miles) developed major transmission issues pretty much on schedule that would cost an estimated $2000-3000 to fix. Its condition minus the transmission issue would put it at the lower end of good/upper end of fair, with about a $2,000 trade-in value. Its only strong point is that following a catastrophic engine failure a couple years ago, we put in a brand new engine that now has only 23,000 miles on it. What's the best way to get the most money when we get rid of it? [more inside]
I have been going to a number of estate sales lately, and they always vary so much. I have a number of questions about structure and what-not, and I am hoping that people who either have run them, have worked for companies that have run them, or have used companies to run them, might be able to help me. My parents just inherited my grandmother's house, a burden they are not happy with. At first they were worried they would have to keep the house for the time being and hire a realtor to get it sold - they are not in a place to take on the cost of a second house, even if it is just temporary. Now suddenly out of the blue, a relative of my grandmother calls and offers the services of her step-son, someone who pays cash for houses and fixes them up. I'm a little suspicious and want to check that this isn't a scam. [more inside]

I've been contacted out of the blue by a total stranger who has offered me a good-sized chunk of money for a domain name I registered about 4 years ago. I'd be happy to sell it to him, but have no idea how that works. How do I avoid getting scammed, & make the transaction, if it's legit, happen? [more inside]

I worked out a private sale of a beginner's violin with a new friend met at a conference (complicated story; detail within). She didn't have enough money to pay me then, and because I had a good feeling about her I let her fly home first and worked out a plan to pay me later. It has been two months, I have not seen a cent, and she's ignoring my messages. What can I do? [more inside]

If all goes well, I'll have the pre-purchase inspection on this used car tomorrow, and see if I can close a deal to buy it. Then what? I need help with the order of all the paperwork and steps. Complication: I'm in MA, the owner is in CA, and the car is registered and located with the seller's relative in NH. [more inside]
This is my current bag, a military surplus canvas haversack. I love it. This is the bag I'm coveting. I would love to love it but it is Way To Much Money. Where is the bag that meets these two in the middle? Where are the Excellent Leather Men's Bags on sale? I am looking for something I can carry without comment (and will last) for the next 20 years.
The problem in a nutshell: I am the sole owner of a S-corp consulting practice with one very large, very happy client. My company has grown a lot and, to handle the workload better, I've brought on some subcontractors who essentially do the same thing I do. Now I'd like to "sell" the book of business to one of my subcontractors, but I have no idea what sort of financial arrangement makes sense. [more inside]

I'd like to sell my desktop computer. I built it in 2011, with intermittent upgrades. It was fairly powerful at the time, as I used it as an engineering student. Specs are below. Taxfilter: I sold a condo in April. I sold it for $5,000 less than I bought it for, but I walked away with some money because I had owned it for 10 years and paid down the principal. I had been renting it out for 4 years before I sold it because I moved to a city nearby. I also put about 10K into renovations over the past few years. Do I have to pay any capital gains taxes? Is it worth it to try to get any kind of credit for the loss I took when I sold it for less than I bought it for?
I'll admit it, I buy a lot of clothes off the sale rack or at outlet stores. Too often, though, I bring home what I think is a great value only to discover, after wearing and/or washing said item, quality problems I didn't see in the store. Things like knits that are twisted and don't lie flat, shirt hems that are hopelessly contorted once they've been laundered, or buttonholes that quickly ravel beyond repair. I know these sorts of problems are inevitable given the state of clothing manufacture, but that doesn't mean I have to buy these "troubled" items. So, savvy shoppers of MeFi, what should I be looking for? What tells you to steer clear of a garment no matter how much you like it? Is there a secret code on the hang tag that everyone but me knows about? C'mon, please share your secrets.

I have a private offer to buy a domain that I registered with Network Solutions. It's not worth much, and I'm selling for less than $200. After some email communication, I'm happy to just trust the buyer to deposit funds in my Paypal account. Question: How do I actually do this in 2013? Do I have to use a domain escrow service and then eat the commission fee? I seriously cannot figure out how to do a direct person-to-person transfer/sale without using escrow. Every search for "transfer domain" points to transferring back to Network Solutions. Every search for "sell domain" points to escrow services. I'm stumped and turn to you. Please explain it to me like I'm in elementary school. Thanks.
I'm thinking of getting a Lenovo Thinkpad x230 to replace my aging laptop and noticed that Ebay had sellers with seemingly good ratings offering machines with higher specs than you can get in the Lenovo store for much cheaper. Is this too good to be true? [more inside]
I run a small Mac support business in NYC. Most of my clients are small businesses, and are repeat customers going back several years. Customer loyalty is high. Expenses are low. Profits are reliable. Physical assets are few. I'd like to sell it, but I can't figure out if it's an asset — or if I'm the asset. [more inside]

I own an Apple reseller somewhere in the United States. I bought this company from the former owner a few years back, despite having no education in business whatsoever (other than what I've learned on the job.) When I first took over as owner, it was kind of fun, challenging, a lot of work, and just slightly profitable (though with a debt from the loan I took out to buy the business). It was like this for about a year. Since then, not so much. Most days, I feel trapped and hopeless. So now I seek ideas. [more inside]

I (mid-20s female) just sold a chair to someone in my apartment complex after posting signs up in some common areas. The guy saw me posting the signs and asked to buy the chair so I made him wait outside my apartment so I could wheel the chair out. He was very nice but he gave me the creeps a little and now I am worried that I put myself in a vulnerable position by allowing him to see where I live. What can I do to keep myself safe now that he knows where I live, and how can I handle transactions like this in the future so I don't endanger myself again? I did take a picture of his license plate just because it felt like the right thing to do.
