My salary history is ridiculous and piecemeal, in part due to working abroad for much less money than I would have made in the U.S. and also just being generally underpaid. I am not opposed to disclosing it to employers when asked, but am afraid the complexity would be a turn-off. How do I signal to employers that I'm not trying to be coy but that I don't really have a salary history that is going to be useful for them in determining my potential salary?

I'm applying for a job posting in which salary history is a requirement for being considered for the job. When writing up my salary history, I started to worry about the fact that most of my former employers are unreachable due to management turnover, business closings, short-term contract work, and the like. Is this is problem and what should I do if it is?

Interviews for a potential new job have gone well, but the process can't proceed unless I provide a salary history. I don't want to because I believe I'm underpaid and don't want that to affect the salary at a new job.

Has this job advertisement just been worded strangely, or do they really NOT want a cover letter for a specialized job opening?

Salary history questions: the job listing requests resume, cover letter and salary history. What is the most elegant/least awkward way to list the history? Also, I've been a freelance consultant for several years, what is the best way for the self-employed to list a salary?
