After only a week or so of
job search, I've been offered a software development position at a little startup that does almost
exactly what I want to do. Seriously, I cannot imagine a more ideal group to work for. I'm supposed to contact them next week to discuss terms and salary. However, during the interview, some of the statements seemed to imply that they didn't have the budget to satisfy my requested salary. I really want to work for these folks, but don't want to sell myself short. Can you think of creative suggestions I might make during negotiations to make up the difference?

I currently make $800/week ($41,600/year) as a freelancer where I work. I've worked there for over a year and am now being offered a chance to work there fulltime with benefits. The benefits package is very generous but when it came time to discuss salary, they offered me $36,000/year, the rationale being that the benefits more than make up for the lower pay.

I am a full time college student right now and have just gotten a job at a bicycle shop. The problem is, I have no idea what I am being paid. When I inquired about employment I was initially turned down, saying that there was not any positions currently available. After some pleading and explaining my passion for bikes the manager entertained the idea. During the interview he asked me when I was looking to make. This question somewhat blind-sided me as I didn't want to give too high of a number and leave a bad taste in his mouth or worse, lose the job. I told him that pay was really not important to me and just working with bikes and learning was the most important aspect of the job. Long story short I got the job but we have yet to discuss salary

I am interviewing for a new job shortly. I am trying to come up with a dollar figure for how much I should ask for. I will be changing cities, working a fairly similar job to the one I am in now, and moving to a city where the housing costs are slightly higher. How do I figure out how much I need to make the move? Is a calculator available to help with this decision? I am looking for raw numbers here, I will factor in social costs later.

I am a Senior Web Developer. I work in Minneapolis/St. Paul. I have a CS degree and I have been at my company for 5 years now (in the industry maybe 6 or so). I work at a big shop with big high profile clients and (i am assuming) larger than normal salaries?
I do this stuff during the day:
90% (of my day) HTML/CSS (expert)
8% (of my day) PHP/MySQL (hacker)
2% (of my day) JS & Flash/AS (slacker)
So what the fricky frack should I be making?

I was watching a woman basketball college game on TV and I started wondering what the coaches make for salaries. Not only the coaches but also the numerous assistant coaches who are sitting there on the bench. I would be curious to get a ball park figure about this subject. Does anyone know where this information is available, not only for basketball, but for football also.

Idle Corporate Question: Has anyone here worked in a Payroll department? I know that one of the great taboos in large corporations is that nobody else knows how much everyone else makes (subordinates excluded.) But, what about a Payroll department. Do they each know how much everyone else in their department makes? Or, is their own information segmented off somehow?

How much income would you expect to make if you were in charge of all the advertising revenue for a company and said revenue was around $4.5 million a year? Current research from salary.com based on the job title, desc, and the area I am in suggests around 150k per year. We haven't started salary negotiations yet, and I want them to make an offer first, but I also don't want to be expecting 150k and then be offered 65k.

The only problem is that our research indicates that they're underpaying her.

I'm attending college soon, after having already been in the job market for over a decade. For quite awhile now, I've wanted to pursue a degree in Philosophy. The question of completing a degree simply for the sake of making my resume look better is actually not a major consideration in my return to education. I can't say that it doesn't factor in at all, however, so my question to the MeFi populace is: How does a major in Philosophy affect possible employment and salary ranges? Is the perception among employers that it is completely useless when applied to most fields or is there a recognition of its value in the job market?

yesterday's credit check question, how do you reply to a prospective employer who wants your salary history in a way that's fair to your value? So many IT/Web type jobs over the past few years have seen pay rates chopped down. If they ask, and A) I know my former employers don't give out salary information; and B) they don't require some sort of three year old pay stub - then why can't I just fluff it up to my true value again? I don't want to get in trouble, but I'm sick of getting low-balled. There's no way I can let them continue to get away with this! Do you just lie? What's the system?

The paychecks from my employer are bouncing. I live hand to mouth. Does that qualify me for unemployment in California? If I walk away from the company, does that mean I have quit and I am ineligible? Or am I laid off and eligible for benefits? The CA website is next to useless, and the phone number is consistently "busy" with a pre-recorded message stating that due to the volume of claims and calls, we need to try and call back later. What would you do?
