Real World Salary Negotiation - How do you do it?

Salary negotiation - how to do it? I know that, in theory, you're supposed to get them to talk first. Does that really work? How do you do that without coming off like a jerk? Nowadays, the salary question starts in the first email. I generally deflect this question pretty well, but in the interview when they ask "What salary range are you looking for?" I run out of things to say. How do you answer this question? Give me specific phrases I can use. Based on an earlier AskMe threads, the Noel Smith Wenkle approach works well. On the other hand... I'm scared to earn more money.

Weird situation to be in: I am interviewing for jobs, and i'm uncomfortable with asking for more money than i earn right now, because i already feel i'm being overpaid. Complication: i'm working with a recruiter who knows my current income, and who is himself remunerated based on a percentage of the income any new employer offers me. [more inside]

Not excited about taking a low-paying job, but do I just take it because I need the work?

I was offered a part-time job that's 1.) an hour away and 2.) pays very badly. I need the work, but also feel like I need to assert my worth, as someone who is hardly just out of college, and has a lot of related experience. Should I just suck it up and take it? [more inside]

Third Party Information

Recently I scheduled an interview for a permanent position by directly applying through the employer's website. In searching more job postings I've found a third party recruiter listing the same job at $X per hour pay (this one as a 6 month term position with option for permanent at the end). I know nothing about 3rd party recruiters and how their fees work; I've just generally heard that temp to permanent regularly get paid less than direct hires. Is it possible to roughly estimate the value of the position per hour if hired without the recruiter's assistance? [more inside]

Unemployment Benefits and Turning Down a Job Offer

My state's unemployment regulations have a section indicating that turning down a job offer is grounds for terminating benefits. Given that at this point, I'm not being asked to provide them with any data as to whom I'm applying, and given the extraordinarily large number of people on the unemployment rolls, am I correct in saying that turning down an offer really has little practical chance of getting back to them? going from salary to hourly without benefits... should i ask employer for a higher wage?

going from salary to hourly without benefits... do I have a choice? should i ask for a higher wage?my firm is really slow, so my employers are changing me from salary to hourly... basically, as work comes in, i will get paid for the hours i bill. they are also eliminating my benefits package (heath/dental/vision/401k). i am not sure what my workload will be like, but i was typically working 40 hours/week and might be working less than 20.
