Do I ask for a raise?

Do I ask for a raise? My long-term contract is being renewed for the second time, and for the second time on the "same terms", i.e. no increase in my hourly rate. I'm torn between asking for a raise because "I should" - my role and responsibilities have expanded greatly over time - and accepting the offer because, well, I'm not going to leave over this and based on my cursory knowledge of similar positions elsewhere I'm still paid competitively. And I don't want to make a fuss. [more inside]

I accepted your offer and work here now. Let's negotiate my salary now!

I started a job several weeks ago and now I think I definitely should've asked for a higher salary. Oops. How soon can I ask for a raise? And how do I broach that subject? I've never had to ask for a raise in my life. Details below. (Sorry the post is quite long because any feedback on how to deal with my specific situation would be great.) [more inside]

Independent contractor - quandary re: asking for/demanding higher fee

I'm technically an independent contractor but essentially an employee without benefits for a small company. How do I renegotiate a higher fee when I've gone over hours on projects these past 6 months ? I am underpaid for the services I provide - my fault for not being more savvy at the start. [more inside]

Please suggest ways to improve my situation in life.

The short version of my question: I am underpaid and need to make what I'm worth but I am also incredibly insecure and the thought of applying for another job sends me into panic and depression. Even when asked by, for example, the VP of the online division of a national newspaper I find myself unable to write a resume and offer it up (true story). Is it possible to convince my current employers to pay me what I'm worth? [more inside]
