Employer reveals they've been inadvertently underpaying me for years

Due to an accounting error, my employer has not been paying me my full salary for the last several years. I'm in sales, and I get paid on commission, so my paycheck fluctuates month to month - I never even noticed my paycheck was always secretly slightly less than what it should have been. My employer just discovered their error and told me immediately. Which I hugely respect. We have a good employment relationship and we'd all like it to continue. They're saying they now owe me about $145k plus interest, and are prepared to write me a check, but they know this raises some tax issues for me. [more inside]

What Salary.com IT job category am I, really?

So my annual review will be coming up in a few months. My job title is "Software Support Engineer." I'm making something in the 30-40k range, which is a good amount for someone with as little experience as I've got (I just started in IT about 2 years ago.) Prepping for my annual review, I bought one of those Salary.com employer salary survey reports. Median pay listed for a "Software Support Engineer I" is $63k! Am I underpaid, or am I really a "Technical Support Representative II" or whatever, and just have a cool job-title? [more inside]

How much should an editor of an online publication be paid?

If I want to hire an editor to manage the blog for my ad-driven website, how much should the pay be if it's full-time? What about part-time? Other than creating and managing content, managing writers (and bringing on new ones), and promoting the blog and the site on social media, is there anything else I should list in a online editor's duties? How should I negotiate?

I have two initial interviews next week at two different companies. Both with the HR person for basically the screening interview. I am very well qualified for both positions and I don’t want to not even get past the first interview because my salary expectations answer is wrong. I am looking for actual scripts on what to say because I don’t know how to phrase this and I want to practice this weekend. [more inside]

How Much Should I be paid for Web Content And Marketing Gig?

What should I be paid? My job is essentially a combination of marketing and web content creation. I write blog and page content for the website of a retail company. My writing requires an in-depth and technical knowledge about the general field as well as an intimate knowledge about how to convey this information in an attractive way to the consumer base. I constantly update my own knowledge in order to provide this content. I write consumer friendly technical info for the individual products as well as more elaborate landing pages to bring google ad traffic to. I add in-depth daily blog posts. I am also expected to manage the email marketing and as well as the online Google ads. Since I have begun this work, the readership and web sales have shot up and I expect it to continue to climb. They want their money back - but should they get it? (UK)

My British employer overpaid me back in June 2008 to the tune of £1k. I pointed this out at the time, but never heard from anyone. Now it's December, and they want the money back. However, I've heard that I can contest this, on the grounds that the employer made a mistake, and that it's illegal to force employees to rectify companies' mistakes. Is this true? And what legalese can I quote? :)

And what exactly is my salary??

I am a full time college student right now and have just gotten a job at a bicycle shop. The problem is, I have no idea what I am being paid. When I inquired about employment I was initially turned down, saying that there was not any positions currently available. After some pleading and explaining my passion for bikes the manager entertained the idea. During the interview he asked me when I was looking to make. This question somewhat blind-sided me as I didn't want to give too high of a number and leave a bad taste in his mouth or worse, lose the job. I told him that pay was really not important to me and just working with bikes and learning was the most important aspect of the job. Long story short I got the job but we have yet to discuss salary [more inside]

How much can I fudge my salary history?

Relating to yesterday's credit check question, how do you reply to a prospective employer who wants your salary history in a way that's fair to your value? So many IT/Web type jobs over the past few years have seen pay rates chopped down. If they ask, and A) I know my former employers don't give out salary information; and B) they don't require some sort of three year old pay stub - then why can't I just fluff it up to my true value again? I don't want to get in trouble, but I'm sick of getting low-balled. There's no way I can let them continue to get away with this! Do you just lie? What's the system?

Boing! Boing!

The paychecks from my employer are bouncing. I live hand to mouth. Does that qualify me for unemployment in California? If I walk away from the company, does that mean I have quit and I am ineligible? Or am I laid off and eligible for benefits? The CA website is next to useless, and the phone number is consistently "busy" with a pre-recorded message stating that due to the volume of claims and calls, we need to try and call back later. What would you do?
