What exactly does "exempt" mean?

So, I am an exempt, salaried employee. The agreement I signed before taking my job was that I would work 40 hours per week. But, of course, my employer is now scheduling me for 42-45 hours per week. As an exempt employee, am I just expected to work these extra hours? [more inside]
