How to negotiate salary mid-career?

I am interviewing for a new job. I'm a mid-career professional with 15 years of experience in my field. I've made the second round of interviews at three different organizations. I expect a job offer from at least one, possibly two of these places. I have NO IDEA how to negotiate a salary offer when it comes, and most of the advice I've found is geared to new college graduates, not people with more experience. How do I do this? [more inside]

Should I worry about an explainable discrepancy in salary verification?

The ball's in my court (I think). Now what?

I have been halfheartedly looking for a new job. My current position does not leave me much time or energy for searching, plus I have had a lot of illness in my family in the last year, which is time-consuming and emotionally draining. When a supplier I work with mentioned that someone in her company had left recently, I asked her whether she plans to replace him, and she said she does. I emailed her my résumé, and she sent me the job listing. In her email, she asked me whether I was interested, and if not, to let her know what my concerns are so they could address them because "your résumé is great!" How do I respond in the most effective manner? [more inside]

Career ladder positions in the Federal system.

I am in a career ladder position in the Federal government. I'm approaching the end of my first year on the job. I have heard from colleagues/friends in government, that going up to the next GS-level in the ladder is almost automatic (requires sign-off from supervisor). Is this true? How do I request this increase from my supervisor? Also, can you help me find documents online which show that one is eligible to go up a grade after one year? [more inside]

How much should I charge a former employer (that laid me off) for contract work?

I was recently let go ("cost cutting") from my job as a web developer, one that I've held for well over a decade at the same employer. After they gave me the news, they mentioned the possibility of me doing work for them in the future on a contract basis and asked what I would charge them. How much is a fair amount to charge them while making sure it's worth my while? [more inside]

Negotiating a Salary for New Job Offer in Libraryland.

I have been offered a position as librarian in a very rich area of California. Though my qualifications (5 yrs experience w/ MLS as librarian in busy urban area), they offered the base amount in salary range, when adjusted to where I live now, is somewhat less as far as I can tell by about $2000. I asked to negotiate salary. This field is tough to move around and this is one of the best libraries in the country. Pay is low in libraries regardless and lower now because of the glut of degrees. The HR person is contacting me soon and I am not sure how to negotiate and feel in a position of little power. [more inside]

Can't we negotiate?

After only a week or so of job search, I've been offered a software development position at a little startup that does almost exactly what I want to do. Seriously, I cannot imagine a more ideal group to work for. I'm supposed to contact them next week to discuss terms and salary. However, during the interview, some of the statements seemed to imply that they didn't have the budget to satisfy my requested salary. I really want to work for these folks, but don't want to sell myself short. Can you think of creative suggestions I might make during negotiations to make up the difference? [more inside]
