Help with negotiation

I just got a job offer (yay!) and I need help with negotiating benefits. Problem being that this is a very small and informal company while I've always worked at large multinationals with clear guidelines for these things. I have no idea how small companies work. [more inside]

Midlife crisis: Suggestions for a career path out of media?

I'm nearly 40 years old and by some measures, successful. I graduated from a top university and have been employed by major companies for nearly 20 years of my professional life. I've grown increasingly dissatisfied with my chosen career though, and I was hoping some of the wise minds here could give me some advice. Details follow. [more inside]

New to the professional world, how can I expect be evaluated?

I'm relatively new to the working world and I've found that I still have a lot to learn about how things "work" and have found this community to be very helpful in the past. I've only been evaluated once before by the company I posted about before. At the time I didn't realize how ridiculous and unfair/unethical their treatment of employees/clients were so I don't have a good gauge for how my current evaluation will go. I was up for my 90 day evaluation about 30 days ago for my current job and it hasn't happened yet. From my intermediate boss, I hear that its a question of how to adjust my pay that is still being discussed. What could this mean? Is it bad? This is confounded by several special circumstances (below). [more inside]

What is my college degree really worth?

I saw this comment on a post yesterday, and I'm baffled. The idea that even a recent liberal arts grad averages $36,000 a year seems inconceivable to me. I got curious: is there any job that I'm qualified for that pays anywhere near that much? [more inside]

Independent contractor - quandary re: asking for/demanding higher fee

I'm technically an independent contractor but essentially an employee without benefits for a small company. How do I renegotiate a higher fee when I've gone over hours on projects these past 6 months ? I am underpaid for the services I provide - my fault for not being more savvy at the start. [more inside]

How should I negotiate?

I have two initial interviews next week at two different companies. Both with the HR person for basically the screening interview. I am very well qualified for both positions and I don’t want to not even get past the first interview because my salary expectations answer is wrong. I am looking for actual scripts on what to say because I don’t know how to phrase this and I want to practice this weekend. [more inside]

How would I go about asking for a salary increase in my yearly review? I came in to this job as the #2 guy on a 2-person contract and then the #1 guy (my supervisor and project manager) quit.
