I have a friend who is close to an offer at for-profit company in NYC, but his background is in non-profit. He wants to ask for a salary in the range that his research shows is a fair for his experience level and the industry standard. However, this amount is nearly $25,000 higher than his current non-profit salary, and he is afraid that revealing his salary history will not allow him to negotiate a fair rate. Does anyone have advice or has been through a similar transition themselves? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I applied to Company's A and B. After about two weeks of interviews and talking to employees of each, Company A seemed better in nearly all respects. I received informal offers from both yesterday, but Company A specified a salary (which was well within the range I was looking for). I told company B this salary, but an hour or two later learned some things that ruled out company B pretty decisively. This morning Company B calls and offers me 10% more than Company A, and stock options (all other benefits being, afaik, equal). I realize I blew my chance at negotiation, but is there a way I can tactfully mention this to my now-employer, Company A? Could I expect them to offer a bit more, or to consider a raise more readily? Idle Corporate Question: Has anyone here worked in a Payroll department? I know that one of the great taboos in large corporations is that nobody else knows how much everyone else makes (subordinates excluded.) But, what about a Payroll department. Do they each know how much everyone else in their department makes? Or, is their own information segmented off somehow?
