I recently sold my house and got a significant chunk of money which I will be using for my next down payment. It's over the FDIC limit. With all the turmoil going on, I'm looking for suggestions of either a) good, solid FDIC-insured banks to open accounts in, or b) reliable, up-to-date sources of information on bank soundness that are understandable by ordinary folk. My U.S. passport expires 13 Oct 08 and I need to book one international trip before then: leaving New York 17 July 08, returning 2 Aug 08 (one destination country, a non-EU-member in Eastern Europe, plus stops for flight transfers in one or two EU member countries). Is it even worth researching various countries' and airlines' how-close-to-expiration-date safety ranges for travel, or should I just assume I MUST renew my passport before then?

Would there be legal issues with possessing a time-lock safe in a vehicle? I have a 10" x 12" time lock safe for myself which I use to keep credit cards, goodies or anything else I need to dole out to myself in small amounts. I'm leaving on a trip to California and it seems this item may cause issues if I were to be pulled over for any reason. Anybody know the law concerning this? Should I just leave it at home?

I have a desktop that is located in a semi-public place. I have a bios password and a windows password on it. Sometimes I leave it logged out of windows so that I can leave in the middle of a project without restarting everything again. I was wondering how hard it would be to get my data? Short of stealing the actual hardware, is there a way to get past a bios password and access my data without me knowing? (From what I understand, resetting the cmos would clear the password so I would know if someone got in.) Also, is it possible to get in if I leave it logged out of windows with a password? How safe is my data?

What's the best way to physically baby-proof my computer? Our 10-month old daughter is showing alarming signs of mobility, so we're baby-proofing our house. I really like having the family computer in the living room, but I have visions of my little girl doing chinups on my CD tray (or worse). We'll be watching her like a hawk, but she's already pretty quick and we'd like to limit the riskier possibilities.

Attack of the Spider Monsters! What seemed like a normal amount of spiders in my apartment has turned into something more horrible. Since they're all very tiny right now, I'm assuming an egg sac opened up somewhere. ick. I have a small child and two cats. What can I use to get rid of the spiders, that won't harm my family? Besides buying a dozen wooden shoes, and hiring a team of clog dancers.
