Spending a significant chunk of savings... to chase a dream.

How crazy am I? I have a significant chunk of savings... almost enough in cash to do something i've been talking about doing for years. I'm not eating into my RRSPs, and I'm leaving 6 months of salary untouched... but I'm seriously debating spending all of the rest (and maybe a bit more via a small loan) to chase a dream. I feel it's a completely irresponsible thing to do and yet I really, really want to do it. [more inside]

How important is it to adhere to the GVWR for an RV?

Next week, I'm leaving for a year-long RV trip across the United States. My class C motorhome has a GVWR of 14,050 pounds. Today, I had it weighed at a certified scale. My load right now is 14,750 pounds, which means I'm 700 pounds over the recommended limit. My question: Just how critical is it really to stay under the GVWR? I've heard some folks say they travel at 10% over and don't worry about it. Some even do 20%. I tend to be a worrier, though, and so I want to get as close to the 14,050 as possible. But cutting 700 pounds? I'm not sure how I'm going to do that. I'd love to get feedback from folks with actual experience. Is the GVWR something I should adhere to rigidly? Or should I relax and accept a little bit of lee-way?

temporary motor home housing during remodel

Does anybody have experience living in a RV (motorhome, trailer, etc) during a home remodel? My brother is planning some construction next month and thought that living in some temporary housing in the driveway may be a viable alternative to a hotel stay for a month or so. I would love some direction on how to look for this type of rental. Bonus points if you know somebody in Seattle that provides this type of service. thank you!

Modding a Toyota RV

I was given a 1984 Toyota RV that is in rough shape cosmetically, but is a strong running chasis. It has the legendary 22r engine (with low miles), a 6 bolt rear axel and a dual battery setup. I am wondering if there is any information on how to strip it down to the frame and if there are any examples of rebuilding a new structure using modern materials?

RV Parks/Web sites

My wife and I will be going camping for the first time with our new 5th wheel camper. We want to go to Watertown New York but are not exactly sure where to stop along the way. We know we want to make two stops before reaching Watertown, once in Virginia and once in Pennsylvania. In Virginia, we would like to stop near the Shenandoah National Forest - a site in the Southern, Middle, or Northern section would be good. In Pennsylvania, we would like to stay somewhere in between Harrisburg and Scranton. Both places we stop must have electricity. Does anyone have any suggestions on some good places to stop? Also, are there any RV Web sites you would suggest that provide listings of places to camp in these areas?
