Rules for Russian visa: going someplace else

I have applied for a Russian visa, naming hotels in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Now I might want to visit Nizhny Novgorod, but since it's quite a bit away from Moscow, I'd take a hotel there for a night. Am I allowed to do that? Or would I have had to put it on the visa application, and without it I risk serious trouble?

What to do with a few hours in Moscow?

Hey, I'm going (with a group) to Moscow from this Wednesday to Friday. Thing is, I get there in the evening and leave early Friday, and so I really only have Wednesday night, maybe three hours Thursday afternoon, and then Thursday night. (I guess I also have very early Thursday and Friday mornings, although seems unlikely I'd really be up for anything.) Anything that I absolutely need to see/do/eat in those windows? I'm interested in mostly arts/cultural/architectural/food/drinks things, but I'm not sure what I can fit into those spaces in the day/night. Thanks. [more inside]

Are there any good movies about the Cold War from the Russian viewpoint?

I've been watching some great Cold War movies like Thirteen Days. The aesthetics are terrific and the tension spectacular. I'm wondering, though, whether there are any films that show the conflict from the Russian perspective? I would especially like to watch (or perhaps read?) accounts by true believers who felt they were defending the people from capitalist imperialism.

In Soviet Russia, Cucumber Eats YOU!

In Soviet Russia, Cucumber Eats YOU!: okay, I can't believe I'm using a question on this, but I've been driven mad by it for years: my dad claims that Russians eat cucumbers in a certain distinctly Russian manner, and that Yul Brynner once ate one that way in a film. Do they? Did he? [more inside]

There's no way Zara and H&M have wiped out the entire shopping industry

Where do all the "normal" people shop in Moscow? The only places that I've found are glitzy marble malls with Western brands and inflated prices... looking for not just clothing, but (open) markets to wander around selling random day to day items, crafts, etc. Also, not necessarily with a purpose to shop but to also just immerse with local day to day living. I've been scouring the internet to find markets where local people shop, but it seems like there was a huge crackdown last year by the government and now everything's been closed. [more inside]
