Runners/others - any tips for stretching my Achilles?
Right - I am a runner. I have one leg longer than the other and an orthotic to balance it. Due to the leg issue I have been attending the Orthopaedic Hospital on the NHS (they have been brilliant). I am female, late 30s, 140lbs, 5'2". Since ramping up training, a bit of pain/discomfort in the instep on the short leg. Sometimes wen running, sometimes after running if I don't support the instep by wearing trainers after my shower.
Referred self back to Orth. Hosp. Orthotist said it is a tight Achilles Tendon, apparently it wraps round the ankle and joins the instep. Both tight but this tightest. I need to get more movement and range in the Achilles. Anyone know/ can point me in the direction of some good stretches?

Joined a gym a few months ago. We often jog 400m as a warm-up. I say "we" but in actual fact I can't do it. About halfway through I lose all ability to breathe properly - I think I may be taking very shallow breaths, but it's hard for me to tell exactly what happens. I feel like I can't get enough air, there's a lot of breathy noises, and I get hot as blazes.

Hi everyone
Would welcome some advice / shared experiences please.
Feb/March got an 8mm orthotic in my left shoe to finally deal with uneven leg length
Orthopedic Hosp orthotic chap said I "may find it a little tiring, maybe a little discomfort", well I was in pain for a bit, mainly left calf and right knee.
Started back running and all fine but as I train for my half-marathon and step up the pace/intensity/length (don't worry - not all at the same time, am doing sensible training plan) I'm getting some twinging in my left calf.

My wife is a serious long-distance runner and her birthday is coming up. She is already outfitted with shoes & shirts, a Garmin 305, a camel back, and a subscription to the relevant magazines. Is there any item that you, as a fellow long-distance runner, would recommend as a great gift? Thanks!

Without going ahead and junking my existing Polar system for a Garmin 305 or 405, is there any relatively small GPS unit I could clip onto my mp3 player armband to add the functionality I'd like (uploading routes to a Sportracks, motionbased, trainingpeaks like service...with the added benefit that I'd have something to take on a hike or go geocaching?

Help me regain my love for running! Started a few years ago, did a half marathon last Oct then slacked off over the winter (did a fair bit on cross trainer/ rower though) then I had my orthotic sorted out, got used to walking non-wonkily and started running again. Hooray! I had trained up properly, enjoying getting running again, did over 8 miles on Monday in preparation for the big run yesterday. Then, did the big run. 8.5 miles of hell - it was boiling hot and bright sun, the race started at 11 and I was slow - so, horrible. I know I was sensible, kept hydrated etc etc, actually feel reasonably OK today, just a bit achy. But a) I feel I failed in the race as I ran it last year find (working on that though, the main one is:) b) I really feel I do not want to go out running again. How do I break through this?

RunningInjuryFilter: Doing couch to 5k. On week 7 (25 minutes running 3 times a week). Yey! After doing a weighted squat incorrectly a couple of weeks ago (too much weight on balls of feet), have a soreness/twinge/ache on my left front lower leg (about where shin splits would be). This gets better as I exercise and warm up, but it also hasn't gone away. Do I need to take a week off? Will this get better or worse if I ignore it? Will I hinder my progress?

I know you are not my doctors and we will be visiting Dr M. The Doctor Who Runs, but in the meantime, any suggestions/experience would be most welcome.
Mr LyzzyBee wanted to start a running programme with me. As he was doing 3 mile walks once or twice a day for a total of 3 or 4 a week, and an hour on a Sunday on the cross-trainer/rower/bike combo, we started a bit more than a "couch to 5k"
We did the below training. He complained of running out of steam on the Sunday, and today he got shin pains. On the OUTSIDE not the inside of the shin bone, and he got a little lump by each shin bone (yuck) as he ran. Stopped as soon as (I noticed) he was in pain.
Running quite slowly, we're averaging 4.9-5 mph. I have a feeling I've pushed him too hard. What do you guys and gals think?
