YANMD, but you may be a runner. I am trying to figure out what to do about a muscle strain/tear in my upper calf, other than the usual icing/NSAID/rest regimen. Race day is 9 days away, and I have taken the past week off any exercise, but am still experiencing pain when walking. Should I run at all the next week, or continue resting and wing it on race day? Are there any specific stretches/massages that might help me recover faster? [more inside]
I developed a knee injury while training for a 10K. I ran the 10K (much to my knee's displeasure), but saw a doctor and physical therapist shortly thereafter. My physical therapist has recommended that I work on cadence training to improve my form. I primarily listen to podcasts (via Downcast, but I can change apps if necessary), and am looking for a cadence training metronome that will run in the background while I play my podcasts. Any suggestions? The metronome in the app "Running Cadence" is what I'm looking for (input your bpm, and it spits out a clicking sound), but it gets all funky when I try to run Downcast at the same time. Any suggestions for cadence training apps (for iPhone) that will run while playing podcasts would be much appreciated!
I've been running since 2007, and since then I've run three half marathons and several 10 milers/10k/5ks and what have you. Over the years my speed and abilities have increased, but boredom has set in and my motivation is lacking, especially when it comes to long distance running. I think I want to transition to doing short distances and speedwork, but I'm not sure what I should focus on. [more inside]
I've recently taken up jogging again, this time with an iPhone and the Nike+ app to track my runs. It seems to be pretty sloppy at tracking pace, compared to my old Nike shoe sensor. It's very smoothed out, so doing intervals, for instance, looks like a sine wave instead of a square wave. Are there any solutions that are better at this?
This is two-things-ism, sort of. Will be in St Louis, MO, USA, along with Ms J0 next week Monday-Thursday, staying at the Drury Inn down by the Arch. Will be in work/meetings until 5pm but would like recommendations on where after that time we could go run (Forest Park?) and also where we should go eat. We have some ideas on good restaurants (limits: Ms J0 is pescetarian) but will gladly accept your tips on the best food and drink establishments. We have a vehicle. Thank you.
My SO and I will be travelling to Northern Italy (the lakes region) and Slovenia in late August. Huzzah! As we're cementing our plans, it occurs to us that it would be fun to run in some sort of organized running race during that time, even if it's just some running club's 5K. However, it's been hard for us English-speaking Americans to find a reliable source of information as to when any such races will be going on. Can anyone help us? Barring actual races, what running tours, or other such similar things, do people recommend in the Italian lakes region, or in Slovenia? [more inside]
Help me feel oriented and prepared for my upcoming race? I'm a 44-year-old overweight woman getting in better shape, starting to lose weight, and starting running. After working with a personal trainer over the winter, I worked up to running a mile for probably the first time in my life. [more inside]

Hello. I am signed up to run the Manchester 10 k on 26 May. I have never run any kind of race in my life before, and am REALLY „not sporty“ though I am used to hiking/cycling. I have not, to put it mildly, trained as much as I should. By now I can jog for 2.5 – 3 km in half an hour, and have mostly „trained“ on the treadmill rather than outdoors (I strained a muscle running outdoors and feel like it’s my muscles and joints that are most struggling with the running rather than anything „cardio“ related as such. So my actual question: is it still possible to get myself into a condition where I can get round the route without walking it and without injuring myself (too badly) in the remaining time? I have been running for a few weeks (with the help of a Couch to 5K app), and am facing an unexpected challenge -- the incessant chatter inside my head. What is a more productive use of my brain while my body is running? What do experienced runners focus on -- breathing, the next marker, their body, music, nothing at all?
I broke a metatarsal in my foot last September, and (without a follow-up X-ray, which I really should do at some point), it seems better. My heel, however, hurts like the dickens. What's up, foot? [more inside]

We need a new Official 5K Theme Song for 2013. We are two adults and a bunch of other people's teens who go to 5K races on the weekends. The first race of the season is upon us tomorrow, and we need the song that will get us up and moving and ready to run. But not just any running song. Special snowflake details inside. [more inside]

I just got a new iPhone. I used to have an adroid and had a favorite running app. Unfortunately, that app is not available for the iPhone. So, MeFite runners, what works for you? I'd like something what won't seize up or shut down in the middle of a run, that will let me listen to music or a podcast, and that will track my runs for me. If possible, I would also like an app that lets me record cross-country skiing and time on the elliptical machine (my winter and non-running day activities). Thanks.

Now that WeEndure is going away, I need somewhere to track my exercise. There are a number of places that have biking and running, but not swimming. I'd prefer simpler to the more complex sites like MapMyRun (which, again, doesn't do swimming, from what I can see). I have seen this and wondered what things are out there, four years later. Bonus: a place that I can dump all my WeEndure data into so I hit the ground running. [more inside]

This is an issue that I've been aware of for years, but have never investigated it with a doctor because it usually only hurts when I put pressure in one particular spot. (Hey, doc, it hurts when I do this...) The spot is 3-5 inches above my ankle, along the very edge of my shin bone on the inside of my left leg. It's very tender, hurts quite a bit if that one spot is knocked or if I push on it. There's no bruise visible on the skin. [more inside]
OK, maybe the verb 'determine' is ambitious but having a close enough estimate is also good. There is a catch, I am not running on a treadmill and I do not have any gadget on my wrist or body. Is it still possible to have a nice guess of the pulse rate because, say, I want to be in the cardio zone and not in the fat burning zone. I think it is a function of age, fitness, speed and running duration but could not find an online chart for this kind of relation. And yes, I know the speed I run at.
I've been looking for good blogs about running, lately. I've found a lot of shoe-review sites, and a few gear-review sites, but I'm interested in general motivational stories of people's training, race reports, that sort of thing. Google hasn't been very helpful, so I figured I'd ask Mefi. What blogs do you like to read about running?
I am a very amateur jogger. I took it up a year ago and can now run 5km fairly consistently and am working my way (slowly, in every sense) up to 10km. I almost exclusively run on the way home from work so I need a backpack for my stuff. Snowflakey details inside [more inside]

Thanks to recommendations on this site, I have been loving Zombies, run. I'm loving it so much, I'm running 6 times a week. I'm note sure how long it is, but the fall is the best time of the year to run, and is right around the corner. I'm looking for any recommendations on other games you can run to.
