Runners! Help me buy or make a foam roller!

I have a tight IT band and a weak medial (?) glute which is allowing my knee to move inward, moving from tweaking towards injury. I have seen the physio. Have 4 key exercises. Don't need more at the moment (thank you!). One involves rolling up and down a foam roller. I would rather cry in pain over this in the privacy of my own home. I have to do the exercises every day for 3.5 weeks so I can manage the half marathon I have planned (again, don't need advice on that, thanks - am being careful / will walk if have to etc etc) So - where in the UK Midlands in a physical shop can I buy a foam roller to roll my leg muscles with? Stretch me! Need your best Achilles Tendon stretches please

Runners/others - any tips for stretching my Achilles? Right - I am a runner. I have one leg longer than the other and an orthotic to balance it. Due to the leg issue I have been attending the Orthopaedic Hospital on the NHS (they have been brilliant). I am female, late 30s, 140lbs, 5'2". Since ramping up training, a bit of pain/discomfort in the instep on the short leg. Sometimes wen running, sometimes after running if I don't support the instep by wearing trainers after my shower. Referred self back to Orth. Hosp. Orthotist said it is a tight Achilles Tendon, apparently it wraps round the ankle and joins the instep. Both tight but this tightest. I need to get more movement and range in the Achilles. Anyone know/ can point me in the direction of some good stretches? [more inside]

Running "through" orthotic adjustment... or not?

Hi everyone Would welcome some advice / shared experiences please. Feb/March got an 8mm orthotic in my left shoe to finally deal with uneven leg length Orthopedic Hosp orthotic chap said I "may find it a little tiring, maybe a little discomfort", well I was in pain for a bit, mainly left calf and right knee. Started back running and all fine but as I train for my half-marathon and step up the pace/intensity/length (don't worry - not all at the same time, am doing sensible training plan) I'm getting some twinging in my left calf. Help me regain my Joy Of Running

Help me regain my love for running! Started a few years ago, did a half marathon last Oct then slacked off over the winter (did a fair bit on cross trainer/ rower though) then I had my orthotic sorted out, got used to walking non-wonkily and started running again. Hooray! I had trained up properly, enjoying getting running again, did over 8 miles on Monday in preparation for the big run yesterday. Then, did the big run. 8.5 miles of hell - it was boiling hot and bright sun, the race started at 11 and I was slow - so, horrible. I know I was sensible, kept hydrated etc etc, actually feel reasonably OK today, just a bit achy. But a) I feel I failed in the race as I ran it last year find (working on that though, the main one is:) b) I really feel I do not want to go out running again. How do I break through this? Shin pain when running - on the outside of the shin bone - help!

I know you are not my doctors and we will be visiting Dr M. The Doctor Who Runs, but in the meantime, any suggestions/experience would be most welcome. Mr LyzzyBee wanted to start a running programme with me. As he was doing 3 mile walks once or twice a day for a total of 3 or 4 a week, and an hour on a Sunday on the cross-trainer/rower/bike combo, we started a bit more than a "couch to 5k" We did the below training. He complained of running out of steam on the Sunday, and today he got shin pains. On the OUTSIDE not the inside of the shin bone, and he got a little lump by each shin bone (yuck) as he ran. Stopped as soon as (I noticed) he was in pain. Running quite slowly, we're averaging 4.9-5 mph. I have a feeling I've pushed him too hard. What do you guys and gals think? [more inside]

Help me not dash my headphones to the ground!

I need headphones for running with. I know there are other headphone questions out there but I have really specific needs: 1. No bluetooth as my MP3 doesn't support it 2. I have really small ear holes so the larger ones don't stay in, I can use the smallest covers for the in-ear ones 3. Do the over-ear hook ones get in the way of one's glasses? Experience on this please! 4. I need a wire that's long enough to get to my waist belt without an extension (with a linker thing that flaps around) 5. I don't want white ones! 6. Available in the UK. Thanks all - hope someone can help!

Why am I not fitter and thinner?

Why am I not fitter and thinner? I started running/walking spring 2007. June that year I did my first 5k in 36 mins. Carried on walking 9 odd miles a week and running 5-8 per week or going on the elliptical trainer an hour or two a week through the summer. [more inside]

Help me take my running a step further

I started running through the walking-running method last year. I have got to the point where I did a 10k run last Sunday; I ran all the way (yay!) and did it in just under 1 hr 9 minutes. The magazine I read, etc, make it clear that to expect to run better/faster/stronger/safer, I need to do some non-running activities now, as well as the running. I am looking at buying a home multigym type thing. Recommendations please! Also - I'd like to increase my hip flexibility - so I can stride longer - I feel I am a bit "tight" at the moment. Best exercises for that? On the machine/ using a ball thing? [more inside]
