Hello.
I am signed up to run the Manchester 10 k on 26 May. I have never run any kind of race in my life before, and am REALLY „not sporty“ though I am used to hiking/cycling.
I have not, to put it mildly, trained as much as I should. By now I can jog for 2.5 – 3 km in half an hour, and have mostly „trained“ on the treadmill rather than outdoors (I strained a muscle running outdoors and feel like it’s my muscles and joints that are most struggling with the running rather than anything „cardio“ related as such. So my actual question: is it still possible to get myself into a condition where I can get round the route without walking it and without injuring myself (too badly) in the remaining time?

OK, maybe the verb 'determine' is ambitious but having a close enough estimate is also good. There is a catch, I am not running on a treadmill and I do not have any gadget on my wrist or body. Is it still possible to have a nice guess of the pulse rate because, say, I want to be in the cardio zone and not in the fat burning zone. I think it is a function of age, fitness, speed and running duration but could not find an online chart for this kind of relation. And yes, I know the speed I run at.

What headphones should I buy for running and the gym? Wish list: Sounds better, and doesn't fall out as easily as the Apple earbuds; lets more ambient sound through than those in-ear headphones with silicone tips; includes an inline microphone and controls that actually work with an Android phone.

My dog is very active. I like to jog long distances. When we run on the lead he pulls and gets distracted by wildlife. Is there a better lead solution? Personal electric fence? How can I get him to run by my side? Must he be condemned to a mostly sedentary lifestyle? He is a Pointer.

Please recommend music I can listen to while I run! The more intense, the better. Video game music often works, but I'm open to anything that makes me feel like I never want to stop. Examples of what I love best inside.

Recently, I began running regularly for the first time in many, many years. But it seems like I only have two modes: running and walking with no levels in between. How can I train to keep a more consistent pace so that I can achieve a quicker mile and get a better workout?

I have resumed jogging. However, already after 5 minutes of running, I will have unbearable pain in my lower legs. I might be experiencing "shin splints", and I wonder what are some good ways to prevent/lessen/delay these.

Recommend me some music to run to. My current favorite album to run to is Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSongs: it's pretty good musically, a little cocky in the lyrics, and is paced perfectly, leading me to run between 8:15 and 8:45 miles. I'd appreciate any suggestions to provide variety, saving me from the embarrassment of having JT as my top artist on last.fm.
