Hip, hurt and hobbled

After appropriately training for a couple of months, I ran a 4-miler on September 16th this past year. After hobbling across the finish line, and somehow making it back to my car and home, I was unable to put any weight on my right leg, and after X-rays and MRIs discovered that I had a stress fracture on the compression side of my femoral neck. I was able to spare myself surgery, and did everything on the appropriate timeline, but I am still not done. [more inside]

Need expert advice on runner’s knee, stiffness

So I have almost two decades of running experience, but I recently had to take several months off. Before the hiatus, I was at 25 to 40 miles per week (mpw). Coming back from zero, I got up to about 15 mpw in about a month, and started to have some knee pain. Nothing sharp, mostly stiffness when my knee was inactive for awhile. I know the easy answer is to back off, and I have, but I’m eager to get back to 40 mpw, so can any informed experts advise on what’s happening to me? [more inside]

another running question! 5K to 8K?

I did C25K and quite triumphantly ran my first race in 34 minutes! I know, not breaking any speed records. Anyway, my friend and I are thinking about signing up for a five miler in early January, so that gives me about four weeks to train. Can I do this? What do you recommend? [more inside]

How to run with audiobooks while keeping pace?

I am trying hard to become a runner, and I like to listen to audiobooks while I run so I don't get bored. But I find that I often slow down unconsciously because I'm not listening to "upbeat music" to keep me moving along at a quick pace. I have a potential solution ... somebody tell me if this is possible and/or stupid ... [more inside]

Cold weather running gear for active teen

My nephew is turning 15 this week and he has been really into running and training with his school track team. I want to get him some gear to help him keep up the habit into colder weather and beyond! I'm considering a fitbit but I think he would require a wrist version and my budget is closer to $50-60 rather than $100-150. [more inside]

stretches for lower back pain after running?

I'm a fledging runner, a little over halfway through the C25K program. Now that the runs are getting more strenuous, I'm beginning to notice some nagging lower back pain after runs (also some annoying heartburn, but I think I can fix that on my own). I've been generally very lazy about stretching before runs (read: I don't stretch before runs), but surely there must be a good targeted stretch I can do to help my back. Please tell me what that stretch is! [more inside]

Running on a track vs running indoors?

I've started Couch to 5K to get myself in a bit better cardio shape and try to fit into my clothes better. This involves a half hour of exercise, 3 times a week. Unfortunately, due to my schedule, my husband's work schedule and having little kids, I can only get outside and go to a proper track to run MAAAYBE once a week on Saturdays. The other days my solution is to run back and forth in my apartment. Am I kidding myself on these days that I'm actually getting enough exercise to accomplish my goals? [more inside]

Cross Country Running

My daughter (sophomore US) is in the throws of her first year in girls cross country. Running to weights: Help me with my special snowflake workout program?

I’m a longtime triathlete who’s been asked to stop doing bouncy, ballistic-type activities for awhile, and no exercise on my back. I can ride a little and I can swim a little, but I can’t run, which is my primary passion. I figure I should probably start weightlifting more anyway, since I’m over 40 and need to worry about losing muscle mass. [more inside]

What does one wear while crawling through a ball pit?

In a couple weeks, my friends and I are participating in the R.O.C. race, and we need some kind of group costume! Something easy to put together, that we can still run around and get wet and muddy in. Any ideas? We'll be 7 or 8 people, in our 30s if it matters. Help me run a 12-minute mile (sigh)

I have been running (off and on) for nearly 20 years, and completed a half-marathon about 10 years ago, albeit in an embarrassingly long amount of time. I have always run extreeeeemely slowly; currently, we're talking 4mph, though I can do so for a whole hour, and I do this about 4-5 times a week. It really seems like I should be able to do a 12-minute mile, at minimum, though, right? Right??? I feel like I'm missing some crucial step in understanding how to reach this goal. [more inside]
