Bluetooth headphone recommendations for running?

I'm looking for a new set of headphones to wear while running and I'm interested in trying Bluetooth. I want to still be able to hear the world around me as I do most of my running on the road. Track/volume controls would be nice to have. Can any of you recommend something you've had a good experience with? [more inside]

I am looking for a marathon within driving distance of Seattle

I am planning on running a marathon sometime between spring 2015 and August 2016 with lots of flexibility in time frame. I need to choose a marathon and it must be ithin driving distance of Seattle. This will be my first marathon so I do want some support - I want a timing chip - and I want a photographer. I'm not sure what else I want in terms of crowds, etc. If you have experience with marathons in this area that you can share, please do.

Is running 20+ miles not safe??

I saw my sports therapist doctor who is a respected doctor in his field. i told him that i wanted to run a marathon someday but he said that marathons are unsafe for hearts/muscles/bones and encouraged me to stick to shorter races. He also said 12-20 miles a week is the sweet spot for running and anything over that loses health benefits. he said he wrote a paper on it. Does anyone on this site who has experience in sports medicine know what race is the upper limit for avoiding undue health risks? [more inside]

Runners: What stretches/exercises are most important to avoid injury?

I have been recovering from a tibial stress fracture for the past 6 weeks, and would like to minimize the possibility of being out of commission for such a long time again. I've improved my running mechanics (180 bpm cadence helped out a lot), but from what I understand, strong, flexible muscles are important in preventing injury as well. To this end: What exercises/stretches would benefit me the most for keeping good running form? What muscles should I be focusing on? [more inside]

Informative, Dry Podcasts for Running

Astronomy Cast has been great, but I'd like to mix things up with other topics! What I'm looking for in a podcast: cerebral/abstract subject matter, steady talking by the hosts -- with few interruptions and few/regular hosts, relatively serious tone (not a lot of banter as well as not a lot of joking). An hour-long podcast would be ideal, but other lengths are workable. [more inside]

Friends, Romans, Healthy People, lend me your experience!

I just started running, and just started using a Total Gym for upper body workouts. Should running cause pain in the medial collateral ligament in your knees? What about in the tibalias anterior? (Not shin splint pain - I know that one well. This is more like a high ankle sprain.) Should lat pulldowns cause pain and stiffness in the side of your neck going down into your shoulder and trapezius? Or crunches cause low back pain? [more inside]

Best Full-Body Strength Workout for Female Runner?

I'm slowly building up my speed and stamina as a runner -- I do roughly 15 miles of hilly outdoor running a week right now, and absolutely love it. I'd like to add in a full-body strength workout (+/- 30 min, 40 including stretching) three days a week. Motorik/Krautrock playlist for running

I'm putting together a Spotify playlist for running (working my way up to 5K), which so far includes Hallogallo by Neu! and Jenny Ondioline by Stereolab, and some songs by Fujiya and Miyagi. What I like about them is the driving, repetitive, steady motorik beat (or a beat that, if not technically motorik, gives the same feeling). I'd love to get more recommendations for other songs that would go on such a playlist.

Bought new running insoles; horrible blister after first run! WHY?!?!

I recently took up running, but ramped up the distance pretty quickly and probably as a result have been having some ankle pain. I went to a sports doctor, who referred me to a physical therapist and also recommended that I buy superfeet or powerstep insoles (I went with powerstep). The following day I ran with them for the first time, and subsequently developed a nasty blister on my left foot. I NEVER have gotten a blister while running. My right foot feels very comfortable with the insole. I'm seeing the doctor again next week, but would like to continue running until then after my blister heals up a bit more. My question for my fellow running MeFites is... Is getting a big blister after one run with new insoles a sign of a bad fit? Or, could it be that the insole isn't properly broken in yet? (I heard that insoles need to be used for a while before they become comfortable, but... a blister after one run, with no prior history of getting them?? Is this not unusual?)

Outdoor allergies, why do you torment me so?

I have allergies. I'm not sure to what, but I'm assuming it's something like pollen or mold since they seem to only really get bad outdoors. I often go to the park to run, and usually am just fine. Yesterday, however, as soon as I entered the park I felt my nose acting up. I was right, and my allergies went crazy as soon as I left the park; I couldn't focus on anything, and my day was essentially ruined. This has only happened a couple of times before in this particular park. My question is - why are my allergies usually okay when I enter this park, but once in a while go completely nuts? What can I try to keep this from happening again. [more inside]

Running in NYC: Hudson River Greenway to Inwood?

Planning a trip to Manhattan soon. I'll be staying in the Meatpacking District, and am thinking about taking a long run one day up to the Inwood Hill Park along the Hudson River Greenway. My friend who runs that path regularly isn't sure whether it goes that far, so I'm wondering if anyone familiar with the area knows if you can go all the way to the northern tip of the island along that path. Also, any tips about water, bathrooms, or general "heads up" info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The phantom joint pain strikes again...

I strained my adductor muscle (groin) in March and rested like a mofo - no exercise at all for probably 10 weeks. The doctor said it looked like a localized injury and that some stiffness would be natural because the repaired muscle grows back a little longer (weird). I've been gradually ramping back up with slow exercise - yoga, dance, etc. - but today after a more strenuous workout I'm feeling a dull ache in my muscle after no pain at all for weeks. Argh. YANMD, but ye who have pulled groin muscles before, does this mean I have hurt myself again, or is some soreness here and there natural? Do you ever feel pain from past injuries? Should I go back to the doctor or just do some gentle stretches and watch it for a few days? [more inside]

For experienced runners: My left foot goes numb when I run. Why?

I'm an amateur runner warming up to the sport, and have been training for a four mile race. Consistently around the 2-3 mile mark my left foot goes numb; first I notice a slight tingling, and eventually it's like I'm running on one foot. I went to my primary care doctor, and he suggested I get a new pair of shoes at a specialty store, which I did. I tried running again today, and the problem hasn't gone away. I'd like to get this fixed without going to the doctor again, so if anyone has dealt with this issue before I'd love to hear what was wrong and how you (hopefully) fixed it. [more inside]

Shouldn't I be feeling stronger by now?

YANMTrainer, YANMDoctor, etc. I've been part of a fitness bootcamp for more than a year.
