Experienced runners: To the sports doc for a numb foot?

I’e been having numbness, arch pain and ankle pain in my left foot. Not all at the same time. It moves around. I’m a fairly avid runner, about 40 miles per week in the summer. I haven’t been running much lately though, because of these issues. [more inside]

Expanding fitness

I started running last year, and I really enjoy it! I've stayed relatively dedicated to the routine and genuinely look forward to it. However, I think I've pushed myself about as far as I need to with running and I'd love to expand my regiment with other activities, but I honestly don't really know anything about fitness and don't really have any friends to ask about it. Mild pain at first metatarsal

Dog boots snow

I'm looking for dog boot recommendations. We use mushers paw wax, but we run in the snow/ice in Minnesota. I'd like some boots as back on I bought a of Good2go Extreme weather boots. After one 2 mile run the fabric is cracking and they stay on most of the time but not as well as hoped. Shes a red heeler mix if that helps at all. any recommendations for dogs+running+snow are much appreciated.

Skincare tips: Runner w/ calluses, dry lips, early fear of wrinkles, etc

Please help a 28 year old woman overcome her sundry skin terrors: I'm a runner who is tired of having ugly feet (callused skin, short and warped toenails). I also suffer from prescription medication-induced dry mouth that Biotene toothpaste/mouth spray only marginally help. The dry mouth contributes to my chronically chapped lips. My hormonal birth control causes vaginal dryness and I want to solve this potentially by changing HBCs instead of treating the systems with Premarin. Plus, I'm trying to take more action than ever to protect my facial skin and other skin from premature aging. [more inside]

GPS watch instead of an iPhone for running?

I currently use Runkeeper on my iPhone to log runs and races (mostly 10k’s). Next year I’m doing a half-marathon and marathon. Is it worth getting a GPS watch & heart rate monitor? (Considering the Garmin 220 or 620.) I’m thinking about the convenience/functionality of a watch versus a phone, and the training benefits of a HRM. I’d rather not get another device unless it’s a marked improvement.

Is running 20+ miles not safe??

I saw my sports therapist doctor who is a respected doctor in his field. i told him that i wanted to run a marathon someday but he said that marathons are unsafe for hearts/muscles/bones and encouraged me to stick to shorter races. He also said 12-20 miles a week is the sweet spot for running and anything over that loses health benefits. he said he wrote a paper on it. Motorik/Krautrock playlist for running

I'm putting together a Spotify playlist for running (working my way up to 5K), which so far includes Hallogallo by Neu! and Jenny Ondioline by Stereolab, and some songs by Fujiya and Miyagi. Bought new running insoles; horrible blister after first run! WHY?!?!

I recently took up running, but ramped up the distance pretty quickly and probably as a result have been having some ankle pain. I went to a sports doctor, who referred me to a physical therapist and also recommended that I buy superfeet or powerstep insoles (I went with powerstep). The following day I ran with them for the first time, and subsequently developed a nasty blister on my left foot. I NEVER have gotten a blister while running. My right foot feels very comfortable with the insole. I'm seeing the doctor again next week, but would like to continue running until then after my blister heals up a bit more. My question for my fellow running MeFites is... Is getting a big blister after one run with new insoles a sign of a bad fit? Or, could it be that the insole isn't properly broken in yet? (I heard that insoles need to be used for a while before they become comfortable, but... a blister after one run, with no prior history of getting them?? Is this not unusual?)

Outdoor allergies, why do you torment me so?

I have allergies. I'm not sure to what, but I'm assuming it's something like pollen or mold since they seem to only really get bad outdoors. I often go to the park to run, and usually am just fine. Yesterday, however, as soon as I entered the park I felt my nose acting up. I was right, and my allergies went crazy as soon as I left the park; I couldn't focus on anything, and my day was essentially ruined. This has only happened a couple of times before in this particular park. My question is - why are my allergies usually okay when I enter this park, but once in a while go completely nuts? What can I try to keep this from happening again. [more inside]
