What does one wear while crawling through a ball pit?

In a couple weeks, my friends and I are participating in the R.O.C. race, and we need some kind of group costume! Something easy to put together, that we can still run around and get wet and muddy in. Any ideas? We'll be 7 or 8 people, in our 30s if it matters. Running in NYC in September, so it will still probably be a million degrees outside. [more inside]

Running advice for a complete and total noob.

I have recently decided that I would like to start running a few times a week for exercise with the dog. I have learned a lot in the two weeks that I have been trying this thing out, but I feel like I may be doing some things wrong. Looking for advice about pre-running/post running routines that may help out with leg pain... specifically... shin splints. Or any other good advice for someone who literally knows nothing about running. [more inside]

Which numbers for runner's ID bracelet?

Rolled ankle, wanting to run

Before leaving for vacation last week (9 days ago), I rolled my ankle playing football. Details are inside, but I probably didn't rest as much as I should've. I'd like to start my Couch to 5K running regimen back up, but I'm obviously nervous about prolonging or re-injuring. When can I feel secure in getting back to running? [more inside]

Help me run a 12-minute mile (sigh)

I have been running (off and on) for nearly 20 years, and completed a half-marathon about 10 years ago, albeit in an embarrassingly long amount of time. I have always run extreeeeemely slowly; currently, we're talking 4mph, though I can do so for a whole hour, and I do this about 4-5 times a week. It really seems like I should be able to do a 12-minute mile, at minimum, though, right? Right??? I feel like I'm missing some crucial step in understanding how to reach this goal. [more inside]

Help me prepare for a half marathon in the Bay area

I just started treadmill running for the first time in my life about 3 months ago. I've had no plan in mind and my schedule and progress has been fairly random. Running 3-ish miles 2-3 nights a week. The other night after work I ran 7 miles and now I'm wondering how to train for a half marathon. [more inside]

Reconciling parenthood with "risky" fitness hobbies

My wife and I are getting serious criticism from her parents about activities that are extremely important to us -- endurance road cycling (me) and long-distance running (her). I've had a nagging injury/pain thing happening toward the front of my ankle on the inside, sometimes traveling up my shin. How do I use heart rate as guidance to run faster?

I am a lifelong runner in my early 40s who’s having trouble getting to the next level. I have a pair of friends who are the same age as me, have been running as long as I have, and train about as much as I do, but they are much faster. One thing I’ve noticed from their Strava files is that they’re able to sustain a much higher HR for longer amounts of time than I can. [more inside]

Recommendation for women's reflective running jacket

I'm trying to find a reflective women's running jacket-- not the kind with tiny little reflective strips at the zipper and seams, but the full-on blazing reflective jacket that lights up your entire torso when light hits you. It's getting dark early now and I don't like running at night/early morning with my current puny reflective-seam jacket. It's also very rainy (Pacific Northwest) so I'd like to avoid the boxy reflective-strip vests in favor of a jacket. [more inside]

Strange symptoms after longer runs

I love long runs and would love to be able to go for longer ones.
