The last computer game I enjoyed (years ago) was Age of Empires: Rise of Rome. I'm a 'man' now and have a Retina MacBook; what's the closest new thing to that?

Diablo is starting to wear a little thin. I need a game. I need some suggestions. I'm feeling a little... world war-ish. Please read on for my snowflake game requirements.

I've never liked real-time strategy games. What games should I try in an effort to break into this genre?

Does anybody know of a computer game that is what I would call "Parallel Strategy"? That is, it's not realtime in the sense that there are discrete turns, but it's not turn based, because plays are not sequential, but played in parallel (that is, all players make their moves in the alloted time for the turn/round). When the time is over for that round, conflict resolution rules happen...

GameFilter: Has there been a game yet that has pulled off a graphically rich, deep strategy "Massivly Multiplyer Real Time Strategy" --or-- an RTS with a persistent online campaign mode, or something like that? More Details below.

Big fan of the Seven Kingdoms franchise. Not so much because of the combat (which was cool), but because of the economy. Are there any other RTS games out there that have such a diverse economy (non MMO, please, EVE would steal me from my life :D)? Specifically, I liked how you didn't even need raw materials, you could trade for them. Also, since I'm wishing, fantasy or sci-fi only, please. Modern day is just too depressing. Please ask if you need clarification, and thanks!

An old RTS game from the early 90s, took place in space. Controlled mother ship, collected blobs of stuff.

I'd appreciate some recommendations for PC based strategy games. I've really enjoyed playing Age of Empires and Caesar 3 in the past and was wondering what other newer games I could try, that are along the same lines. I tried the newer releases of the AOE franchise but find that I enjoy games that are set in ancient civilizations more .
As far as playing hardware goes, my laptop has 2 GB of RAM and a pretty decent (I think!) video card (ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 with 256 MB of video RAM). Thanks!

I'm looking for a battle strategy game in the tradition of the Myth series (or the old-school game "Siege"). Interested in troop movement and in-battle tactics, NOT maintaining economy/resources, spawning units, buildings, etc. (Warcraft didn't interest me when I tried it many years ago).

I'm looking for an interesting and fun Real Time Strategy game to play. I love the concept, but have never really found one that I enjoy - too much dirt farming or bizarre interfaces or complex strategies that bewilder my Quake-addled brain.
