I've played every version of D&D and am wondering, is there an RPG that doesn't take 3 hrs to make a character, where combat can be resolved in less than an hour and doesn't require a dozen books?
I'm flexible on the genre, but fantasy or scifi is what I'm most interested in, something that can be used over the longterm, not just for a few games (RISUS and it's pals appeal but doesn't seem durable enough), with enough flexibility for me to mash things together but without me having to design my own homebrew from 2 or 3 systems. I've done that.

Eberron veterans! Help a DM (new to Eberron, not to DMing) out. I'm looking for intriguing plot hooks that specifically exploit two of the setting's distinctive characteristics: the treatment of magic as everyday technology, and the huge rich/poor gap (i.e., the extent to which the dragonmarked houses dominate). Share your stories, unused campaign hooks, or idle musings. Our preferred focus is role-playing, not roll-playing.

As a handmade gift for some folks who met in World of Warcraft, fell in love, and got married, I would like to use an image that says both A) Love, and B) WoW. I found info on Love Tokens and "
Love is in the Air" items (and a pretty badass-looking plaque), but I don't play the game, so I worry that an item that visually seems to say "Love" may also have deleterious side-effects or something. I like the non-obviousness of the
Lovely Charm Collector's Kit, but again, I'm way over my head. WoW players, what think you?

Anyone know a good place twhere a small group could get together (some others might join us) that are open till at least 10-11pm? Coffee/tea shops, gaming stores, etc - I'm preferably looking for personal opinions since there is only so much you can get from Google Maps :)

I recently bought the Laundry series by Charles Stross and thanks to that and Artw's constant efforts to encourage the stars to come right I'm really jonesing for some Call of Cthulhu/Delta Green action. It's been a
loooong time since I've had any chance or time for roleplaying and I'm so far out of the loop I'm in non-euclidean space...

My boyfriend has been looking for a while to find a D20 to match the rest of his dice. You can see a picture of the matchy ones and the offending, not-quite-matchy 20
here. When we first got the set he just picked them all out of a little jar on the store counter. When he asked about getting a matching 20, the lady working there said Chessex wasn't making them any more. We've of course done some looking around on the 'net, but without even knowing the name of the style, it's been tough. Thanks!

I came across my old
Space: 1889 books in my parents' basement over the holidays and took them back with me to the US. I'm considering starting a campaign in that universe, but set during the War of 1914-18. Considering the different history and technology how do progress the setting into a Great War like scenario that's both true to the Space: 1889 universe as well as the real First World War?
