There's a small pond a ten minute walk from my house. I'd like to do some breezy fun rowing, but it would be too expensive and too hard to transport a full-out rowboat, kayak, or canoe there by myself. Is there a not-too-expensive, easily-transported option that's really fun to row around in?
What sports are similar in the way they work out the human body to Dragon Boat, but can be done during the colder months/when the river is iced over? Even better would be a sport that also has the cooperative team element as Dragon Boating.
I want to try a new sport this Fall and was thinking of taking up rowing. I am a bit out of shape, however, and this makes me nervous. Tell me about a time when you started a team sport even though you were kind of out of shape, and what advice you have for someone in my position. And any advice for a novice rower would be appreciated. [more inside]
I was a (sort of) competitive rower in a former life. I now enjoy kayaking and other outdoorsy water excursions. I want a boat that combines the best of these. Is this a possible thing? [more inside]
Stuck at a fitness plateau. Not weight loss - fat loss. I'm about 5-8% (not exactly sure; I only have inexact measurement options) below where I want to be, which is the 10% mark. Help me get to my goal or as close as possible by the summer (and stay there)! [more inside]

Hello Hive Mind, I'm looking for the title/author of a non-fiction book I read in the last few years. Here's what I remember: Retired professor returns to college as a freshman... Goes to a school that teaches a "Great Books" curriculum, where practically every class is a seminar/discussion group. The school encourages every student to participate in intramural athletics, so the old "freshman" joins the rowing team. The book is the story of his year at the school. Thanks for your help!

Long time listener, first time caller: Any globetrotting rowers or shipping pros out there? I need to transport a rowing oar overseas, and I don't want it damaged. I'm planning to check it on my flight as 'sports equipment', but any advice or alternate suggestions are welcome. More details inside. [more inside]
I exercise on a rowing machine ~4 times a week and while I love the benefit to my body, I hate what it does to my poor palms in the form of calluses. Suggestions? [more inside]
How can I get out on the water in Portland, Oregon? When I visited Boston a friend took me out sailing on the Charles river. They had some sort of community program where you could take lessons and then take out boats you were certified for. It was a lot of fun, so I'm wondering if there's anything similar, not too expensive, in Portland. Rowing might be interesting too, or just some way to boat around without actually owning a boat. I have lots of experience listening to Sloop John B, if that helps?
