Why does my router change its own name?

Why does my Linksys router keep changing its own name? I go to the Linksys URL,, I give my router a unique name--say, Roxanne--and I give it a solid password and disable its broadcast. All is well. Then, a few days later, my PC fails to connect. When I plug in a cable and go back to the Linksys page, I see that Roxanne is no longer the name. The router has renamed itself "linksys," and so my PC no longer connects automatically. This happens no matter how often I change the name back. Any ideas?

Wireless router that can connect to a printer and external hard drive?

Please help me find a router to make my parents' lives easier. I am looking for a wireless router that will allow me to connect to a printer and an external hard drive via USB. It doesn’t need to be wireless N (G is fine), but if it’s N it needs to be dual-band. Other than the Apple Airport Extreme with a USB hub attached, what wireless routers can do this? The models from Linksys with Storage Link and D-Link with Shareport seem to be able to connect to either a printer or a USB drive, but not both simultaneously. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. VPN from home NAS system.

I am trying to set up my router so that I can get at my files on my 3 NAS boxes. These NAS boxes are 1) D-Link DNS323, Infrant ReadyNAS NV+, and a Buffalo TeraStation HD-H2.0TGL/R5. The router is connected to the internet via a home service cable modem so it won't have a static IP and one step is to find the IP address before accessing. I have a router (DLink DGL-4100) which says it can make a IPSec VPN or FTP using a Virtual Server (I think). There would be no other PCs on the network since I would be taking my laptop with me when I access the network. The manuals for the routers talk about FTP serving but if I get a VPN set in my router then I should be able to just browse for whatever I want that way...right? The instructions say it can be done, but how? Please give me step by step instructions the best you can for setting up the router, the NAS boxes and my XP laptop (with suggested software, if necessary) since I have looked all over the internet and can't find anything I can understand. Of course the access should be encrypted and password protected. THANKS GUYS. [more inside]

Why won't my router route?

Last week, I unplugged and plugged back in my Linksys WRT54GX4 wireless router. Since then, I haven't been able to connect to the internet through it, either wirelessly or through a wired connection through the router. The internet works fine if I plug the ethernet cable from the modem directly into my computer. I can also access the router's settings through my browser when I'm plugged into it. In the settings, it shows the internet as unavailable. But all the little status (including the internet one) on the front of router seem to indicate that everything is working fine. Firmware is up-to-date. Help! [more inside]

Why can't my router see the internet, when my computer can?

Networking question: I have a wireless router (well, 2, actually, as I thought the old one was faulty so just bought a new one) but it can't see the outside world. If I plug my computer directly into the modem, I can use the internet. If I plug a router into the modem, it can't see the internet. (I can connect to the router via wireless or wired, but the router can't connect any further.) Any ideas what this might be? [more inside]

Wifi in Router not working

I have a Linksys wrt160n router with the latest firmware. It works fine when wired with a desktop but not with my wireless notebooks. The Wireless light on the router is ON but wireless devices are not able to detect the network even though everything is in the same room. If I use wires, things work perfectly but not wirelessly. I have reset to factory defaults, tried the power cycle, etc. but still the same issue.

PLease help a router challenged friend

After some time away I reconnected my d-link DI-624 router and it appears to not be working. I am pretty lost when it comes to router business. I can not seem to wrap my mind around it. I was out of the country for a few months and had unplugged my router and modem. The proper lights illuminate and are on but I may have to reset the router. Do I want to do this? How? Can a hive member maybe point me in the right direction? Maybe a step by step fix. The router is a few years old and I no longer have any documentation.
