I've been lazy and just paying the monthly lease on the modem/router for Time Warner internet service in Brooklyn, NY. It's an Arris DG1670. I feel like I could both save money (eventually) and get better service by getting my own gear, but what? For use with a variety of mostly Mac devices, if that matters. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Here is the list of compatible modems for wowway. I want a combo modem/router. How do I know which one to get? Our internet is 110 down, 15 up speed, and we want docsis 3.0. Most of the ones one the list don't seem to be combos?
Using a new modem/router setup brought on unbearably slow speeds, but which is to blame?? [more inside]
Installed new modem, everything was fine, worked for a few days. Now as far as I can tell the modem and router are working just fine for everything ELSE, but I've been trying to get the laptop on wirelessly for three days now and NO GO. [more inside]
Hi everyone, For the past 5 years I've used LinkSys BEFSR41 (version 4) router and generally haven't had too many issues but for the past 6 months its been pretty hellish as I have intermittent dropped connection and LinkSys says that this model is no longer supported and has no active firmware upgrades. My household has 3 computers hard-wired and connect at all times. One of them is hooked up to online tv streaming so you could say the internet is always 'on' here. [more inside]
After an internet outage (now resolved) Comcast customer service recommended that we update our 8 year old cable modem (Thompson DCM-425) to a new wireless router/modem combo. I'm trying to figure out if this will really be an upgrade or more of a "well the wireless would be faster, if it were still working" sort of situation? [more inside]
Comcast internet accessed via a Motorola modem, which Comcast assures me is performing well, even though it's older. I have a D-Link DGL 4300 router behind that, which supplies the house network (desktop, Tivo and drops for laptop setup throughout the house). The router is probably 7-8 years old. [more inside]
After a recent change in routers by my service provider it's taking a depressingly long amount of time to connect to the internet. I need a fix explained to me like I'm your grandmother's less computer savvy friend. Details henceforth. [more inside]
I finally caved and got cable and internet from Comcast (Xfinity). I now need to get a wireless router and modem. I have the Performance level of internet from them. According to Comcase I need DOCSIS 3 modem. They have a list of devices they support, but only one is a modem/wifi router combo. [more inside]

I have a Zhone wifi router/modem which I purchased from my ISP. It drops connection occasionally but regularly (a couple-few times a month) which can be fixed only by restarting the modem which is sort of a pain. Googling around suggests that my modem is a crappy router. Is it better to purchase a different router/modem or just to buy a wifi router and turn off wifi on the modem or to buy the wifi router and to run the modem in bridge mode (I have access to the web UI)? If one of the latter two, what is the current first choice for routers?

I'm trying to switch my laptop from a DSL to a wireless connection. I was told this would function as the modem/router I needed, and so ordered it. Today it came and although it works perfectly as a modem it doesn't seem to have wireless router capabilities. Please tell me whether it does, and if so how to set up a wireless connection, and if it doesn't, tell me what I should buy or do instead after I return it.

Does anyone know how to configure the firewall settings on a new-model Motorola Netopia 2247-N8 modem/router? I am having severe issues with streaming audio/video (endless buffering, permanent stopping), and my ISP's only suggestion is to adjust the firewall on my device. However, my GUI seems to be missing the buttons/links/menus necessary to even access the firewall settings. [more inside]
I have an Actiontec GT701WG that can supposedly act as a DHCP server, but nothing gets an IP address from it. Manually assigning IP addresses works fine, but that's a pain with several devices. I also have a Linksys WRT54G that I thought I could use as my DHCP server instead, but I can't get it to connect to the Actiontec with the static IP settings. How can I make this work without buying new hardware? [more inside]
I have a Linksys WCG200 cable modem/wireless router combo device. It sucks at wireless (and extensive Googling has indicated that's unfixable), but it's OK at everything else. Can I pick up a $30 wireless router, plug that into the device I have now, and use that without any loss of quality? Would I need any other devices? Would it just be easier to get a new stand-alone cable modem as well?

I currently use AT&T as our broadband ISP at home. Our five-year-old modem/router just died, and since it's so old, AT&T tells me that it's no longer under warranty, and I have to buy a new one myself. Then they directed me to an AT&T Wireless retail store to go buy the equipment. But can they force me to buy one of their routers? What if I can find a comparable one cheaper somewhere else? Can they refuse me customer service or deny me installation help (which I will need - I'm hopelessly n00bulous in this department) if I don't by an "official" AT&T router? [more inside]
