My wife and I are flying in to Cincinnati Airport (CVG) with the purpose of going to Huntington, West Virginia. What's the best route to take? We don't need anything scenic, etc. Would just like to get there (and back, eventually) safely and not too slowly. Google Maps seems to favor KY-9 for most of the route, but I'm seeing conflicting reports on how safe that road is.
So according to Google Maps I have two main choices when driving from Berkeley to Moab, 80 to 50 to Moab which is 907 miles and 80 to Salt Lake City to Moab which is 955 miles. Despite the 40 mile difference these two routes are generally the same duration according to Google's estimates. What is it about going 80 to 50 that makes it so much slower then 80 straight through? I want to drive around my city while an app tracks my route. As I pass certain buildings, I want to be able to touch a button that marks that location on the route, so that I can find those landmarks again later. Does something like this exist? [more inside]

I'm leaving at 10am tomorrow from Waltham, MA and driving to Las Vegas. Stressing over the weather. I plan on taking it slow...driving maybe 8-9 hours a day and not at all after dark. I've never driven in bad weather so I'm really nervous. If I take Northern route I'll be in snow in Denver and if I take Southern route there are severe thunderstorms (and poss tornadoes?) in OK and TX by Wed. and Thurs. I'm driving alone and this is my first road trip. BTW I have a Nissan Rogue that will be packed full. Looking for advice planning route home...details appreciated! Thanks!

My brother is moving to Boston (Waltham area) and he's driving there from Vegas tomorrow morning. What is the best way to get there (avoiding Colorado) and what cities would you recommend stopping for a motel to crash along the way? Can it be done in 3 days? He's traveling alone and would like to avoid snow when possible. Not looking to sight see. Just want to find the simplest way to get there. Thank you.
Boyfriend and I are planning a round trip (by rental car) through California and the Southwest and we'd love some input on the first rough draft of the route. We're going for 23 days in September next year and would like to stay in fairly affordable hotels and motels (no camping). [more inside]
Hi all, I am moving from Cambridge to Providence on Sunday morning. I'll be picking up a 16 foot truck from Penske at 436 Riverside Ave in Medford at around 8:30am that morning, and driving it to Harvard Square, probably to Linden St between Mass Ave and Mt. Auburn. And once it's loaded, on to Providence. I need help knowing whether I need a permit, and about the best way to drive the truck through the streets of Medford, Somerville and Cambridge. [more inside]
Several years ago I read about an abandoned stretch of highway midway up the North Shore in Massachusetts, possibly in Danvers or Peabody. Google has turned up this page about an abandoned road in Newburyport, and a reference to an unfinished onramp in Lynn. I could have sworn there was something north of Lynn and east of the Merrimac River, but all my searches have redirected me to those two pages. Am I hallucinating this, or is there an unused onramp or stretch of road south of Newburyport and north of Lynn?
I'm in San Francisco for the summer again, and looking for can't-miss bike rides as well as apps that will help me find more of them. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
I'll be doing a bit of driving in Eastern Kentucky and into West Virginia. I've got the destinations, and have had Google cook up some routes, but I've seen routers make some pretty bad assumptions about back-woods roads. I'm on a fairly tight schedule, so the fewer surprises the better--I'd just as soon stick to major roads unless there's a guaranteed time savings. I'm coming from near Cincinnati to Betsy Layne, KY (near Pikeville) and going from there to Oak Hill, WV (near Beckley). [more inside]
I'm going to be in New Haven, CT for the first time ever for a few days without a car soon. I would really like to line up at least two relatively easy bicycle rides that will end up at the seacoast during my short visit. Can you point me in the right direction? Bonus points if you can help me borrow or rent a bike. [more inside]
For the past year I've been trying to bike down every street in St Louis. In the beginning this was easy and wide-open and fun. The middle has been less so. Now, sitting at ≈65% completion [map: zoomable | 1.5mb png | GPX] my current approach has become overwhelming and tedious, and is no longer working; I need to get way smarter about this. How would a programmer, a mathematician, or a GIS/transit specialist approach this endgame, and what tools/software would he/she use? [more inside]
I'd like to produce an offset-print-quality map, modeled after airline flight path maps, which graphically reproduces hundreds of point-to-point connections: in this specific case, between radio transmitters and reception locations. What software is capable of producing some variation on this, perhaps by putting in GPS coordinates? (OS X please.)
Hivemind, what sights are they are to see and/or photograph along the way? What should we not miss? What is a must see? What is out there that's unique? Ghost towns? World's largest ant? [more inside]
Please suggest bike routes in New England that meet some specific criteria. We took our son on a section of the East Bay Bike Path near Providence for his first bike ride last week and he loved it. He sits in an iBert on Mom's bike. We are looking for similar routes. In looking for similar I articulate what specifically I think is good about this path for us in the extended explanation. We can ride weekdays in addition to weekends. Thanks. [more inside]

I have business in the Bloomfield Hills suburb of Detroit in a couple of weeks. Google Maps gives me two routes from the airport car rental to my destination with roughly the same travel time and a third that appears slightly longer. Which is best in terms of ease of navigation for a solo driving Detroit area newb, safe road conditions (especially if it snows), and likelihood that the travel time is accurate (i.e. not prone to massive unexpected delays)? Three kids, two weeks, one car: Toronto to San Francisco vacation, or "if you like it so much then quit your job!"
Late-March roadtrip from Toronto to San Francisco, or wherever we end up by the time we have to head back. We've got two weeks, or sixteen days if we really need it. There's three of us. We currently have no plan and only vague notions of freedom on the road and driving into podunk towns to see giant balls of twine. As such, we have tons of logistics questions, which I will attempt to summarize: [more inside]

I'll be driving from Los Angeles to the Seattle area in a few weeks. I don't want to endure the dreariness of I-5 all the way up, but I also don't want to spend too much time on the trip. I'm a fairly new motorcycle rider (MSF class, less than 1,000 miles so far), and I'm looking for a route out to Eastern Long Island that is both fun and not completely insane, especially through Queens & Nassau County. My longer rides to date have been up the Palisades to Harriman & the surrounding area. If I was in a car, I'd simply forgo the fun aspect & get on either the LIE or the Grand Central/Northern Pkway, but both of those routes are pretty dicey, and stress-inducing even in a car. My time is flexible - I'd plan on doing the trip during off-hours, both heading out & returning. Suggestions much appreciated. FWIW, I'm heading out from Park Slope.
