Improving battery life for a Droid 3: energy management or rooting

I have a new-old Droid 3 (bought new, only started using it recently) and it's not holding a charge very long, even when I'm not actively doing anything with it (it can drop from 100% to 70% over night). I looked at its battery usage, and the bundled apps that I didn't want or use were using a lot of battery (YouTube was the worst, at 27%). Should I try some cellphone management apps (examples), get a new battery, root it to uninstall bundled apps I don't want or need, or root it to run a custom OS? [more inside]

Reusing an ancient cellphone

I have a deactivated Samsung Stellar that's not worth the effort to sell, but would be a serviceable Spotify MP3 player if I used WiFi to download playlists to the drive. I think it would be best to root it and replace the bloated OS with something smaller to accommodate the hefty Spotify offline files. What's a relatively painless guide to someone who's never jailbroken or rooted a phone before? [more inside]

Help me root my Galaxy S4 without ruining it

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 on the Bell network in Canada. It is bloated with bloatware, and most apps can't actually be transferred to the SD card i've mounted. So i have a phone without much stuff i actually want on it, and tons of stuff that i don't, and i want to fix that situation - but i'm nervous. I've seen various solutions on message boards and stuff online, but i'm very wary of downloading zip files from random message boards, for a solution that may or may not work for my phone. Should I try rooting my HTC One X?

I am a little unhappy with my two-year-old HTC One X, mainly because of HTC's irritating firmware/software "updates" that have reduced the core functionality of the phone. Should I try rooting it and installing a new custom ROM? I am not terribly tech-savvy, but can follow instructions. [more inside]

I grew frustrated of my adventures in installing CyanogenMod, turned off my Samsung Galaxy S when it was in "Downloading, do not turn off target!" mode, and now all my phone says is "Software update fail." What do I do? Can I do something? [more inside]

My HTC Evo Shift is feeling cramped

My HTC Evo Shift 4G (two years old?) keeps telling me I'm running out of internal storage. Right now there is only 51.59MB free in the internal storage, while my SD card has over 14G free. It's getting to the point that system apps can't be updated because there is not enough space. What can I do to free up more internal space? [more inside]

Bricks are a lovely red color, but I still don't want one

I just got a Nook Color for my birthday. It appears to be running v1.1.0 of the Nook software (which is old, n'est pas?). I want to root it, but I'm a complete newb at rooting. I need some handholding and a whole lot of information. (pardon the babbling, the joy of having the complete works of Agatha Christie at the touch of a finger has turned me into a gibbering idiot) [more inside]
