There are some buildings at a Cornell Univeristy with slate shingles. The shingles towards the top, near the peak of the roof are about half the size of the ones along lower part. Why? Is this common? [more inside]

I'm looking for a knowledge base about how to get on rooftops in big cities. I live in Portland, OR, so Portland buildings are of the most immediate interest to me, but I'd be interested in any city.

I am thinking of installing a metal roof. I am in central New England. My present shingled roof has a 3½" to 12 pitch and is rated for up to 30 pounds per square foot. This winter The roof had to be shoveled on a regular basis. I am both worried that with heavy repeated snows my home is at risk for structural damage and I suspect that this 30 PSF rating is not a real world figure. I also have a problem with heavy snow blocking the combustion air for my furnace which is built into the furnace stack. Would a dark colored metal roof with such a shallow pitch be self clearing under heavy snow?

Our shed roof is falling apart - the underlying wood seems fine, but the waterproof layer (felt?) has in part blown off in a recent gale. I plan to buy a roll of something on the internet, strip off the remaining waterproofing, and then attach the new stuff. So my questions are: What do I need to buy to put on the roof, and how do I attach it?

What do you know about roof hatches in Brooklyn co-ops, Lapeyre stairs, and the ol' DIY spirit? Can I just order or a pair, or is this a job for a contractor? Do I have to get an architect involved or something?

Its midnight on Friday. My roof is leaking. Its supposed to rain all weekend. My house is 3 1/2 stories and the leaky part of the (gabled, Queen Anne-style) roof is not easily or safely accessible to without special equipment that I don't have. Assuming that I'm not going to be able to get anyone to fix this before Monday at the earliest, is there anything I can do to to at least mitigate the damage? [more inside]

We've recently moved into a house where the previous owners removed all of the rain gutters from the roof. We've more recently had new gutters installed(bye-bye, tax refund!) except for one particular spot at the corner of a very steep valley where two edges meet. Is there a way to collect water at a spot like this? [more inside]

What do you use to open Velux or other roof windows?
So we have 3 velux type roof windows in our new house - all of which are out of arms reach, including one which is over the stairs so we can't easily use a ladder to reach it either. Any suggestions for what to use to open them apart from the official velux opening rod which is 25 quid. We tried a walking stick which is fine for a bit until the head broke off!!
Anyway I look forward to your ingenious answers.
