Insulation Information?

Our house is a small Cape, with a crawlspace attic. We’re going to get a home energy audit in the next couple of weeks, and the insulation of the attic is of particular concern for us, as it really gets quite warm on our second floor. Can I get your insulation wisdom here? [more inside]

Cheapest way to drive an 8x4x1' package from LA to Burningman?

I'm planning on building a Hexayurt and driving it to Burningman and back. I'm told that Hexayurts fold up into a package that's approximately 8x4x1' large. Unfortunately, my car is a 2002 Toyota Camry LE without a roof rack (and without rain gutters, so roof racks are challenging/expensive to install). What's my cheapest option that's still safe for a 1300 mile car trip? [more inside]

Roofing repair... In February... In New England...

I was up in the attic the other day, putting away some stuff, and I noticed a delightfully large amount of mold going down either side of on section of the roof. Joy. The question now is exactly what to do, with a roof that obviously needs repair, in February, in New England. [more inside]

My new roof is leaking (I think). Who do I call first?

My roof was replaced a year ago, due to hail, paid for by my insurance company and performed by a local contractor. This morning, in heavy rain, I see fresh water-tracks down a wall of my bathroom. I'm not sure who to call, or how to get all my ducks in a row prior to calling. [more inside]

Leaking flat roof on relatively new house in NM => pvc membrane roof?

Our house is a six year old flat roofed house in New Mexico. Every time it rains or snows, the roof leaks in several places. We've gone up there with tar and sealant about 5 times in 18 months. Sometimes we fix it, but not before another leak forms elsewhere. We invited several membrane type roof vendors over for estimates and they range from $20K-$26K for a roof with a lifetime guarantee. The membrane roofing seems like a good idea. Does anyone have experience or advice with finding a permanent solution to a leaking flat roof.

Hot Tub Roof Installation (in San Francisco)

Hello! I noticed a deck being built on my roof (4 stories tall) in San Francisco. I think it is highly possible that they are putting in a hot tub (which I am stoked about) because there are drainage holes in the tiled floor of the deck they built, as well as plumbing. Anybody here experience the process of installing a hot tub on a roof? How do they get a hot tub up there? Are there any resources that talk about installation of hot tubs on existing roofs? I tried flexing my Google fu to no avail and this subject matter intrigues me so.

Our roof is being redone tomorrow, worried about cats.

Our house still has its original roof from when it was built in the mid-1950s. It's finally getting replaced tomorrow -- after months of leaks in nearly every room -- but I'm worried about our two indoor cats dealing with it. I know the noise will terrify them and they will hide, but are there other things I should worry about? [more inside]

Is a flat roof in the US south a bad idea?

Flat roofs in the south: is there a major problem with having one on a house in Houston, Texas? Snow load is not an issue, and every commercial building has one. The specific context would be a garage with a flat roof with an outdoor seating area on the roof for nice evenings.

Should I raise the roof before buying the house?

I am buying a house and the roof is questionable. There were missing tabs all over. A roofer came out and did minimal repairs at the current owners' expense but he says the roof has "2 to 5 years" left, maybe, depending on weather (we live in the midwest). Would it be reasonable to ask for a reroofing allowance in purchasing this house? [more inside]

How much to pay for someone to shovel snow off the roof?

We live in the D.C area and have had ice dams on our roof and its starting to cause leaking problems. Nothing drastic, but some water is starting to drip inside of our windows. I put some Deicer in socks and threw them on the gutters to try to clear a path for the water to go, but that seems to be taking forever. Our neighbors have some guys shoveling snow off their roofs and they said they would do the same for us for $500. Is that too much to pay? Our house isn't that large, its a split-level home.
