What is this baby beast in my ceiling?

Grumpybearbride and I have been plagued by beasts in our ceiling, scritch-a-scratching and tumbling about in the night, causing a ruckus and keeping us from getting a good night's rest. This morning it sounds like they added a new member to their family. I recorded and enhanced the sound of said wee beastie in hopes that someone with more knowledge than I could potentially identify it. This is the recording. Help!

two turtle doves, and a raaaat in a christmas tree

we live in the woods in northern california and want to decorate a large pine tree for christmas which currently lives about 15 feet from our front door. it will be staying where it is; we want to add some natural-ish decorations which could maybe feed the several species of birds that live around us. how festive. however, this being the country, we also have wood rats aplenty. the last thing i want to see on christmas morning is our tree filled with rats. is there a way to feed the birds without encouraging rats? or should we just dress the rats as soldiers and recreate the nutcracker suite in our front yard?

Mice as Fire Hazards

Our house is 150+ years old. It's porous. Ergo we have mice. Is this an actual problem? They're not in the living areas (thank you, cats) but they are in the crawl space under the house and they are in the walls. I've heard anecdotes, of course. And you are not my electrician or my pest control professional. But do mice really chew on wiring? (If they do, why?) If they do, will they really cause a fire in a house with updated wiring and a modern breaker box?

Sleepless in Seattle: Must landlord get rid of mice?

Identify the rodent I caught in my basement (in a trap)

Had a rodent in our basement last winter but it never got caught in any traps. Last night I went down there and saw this guy scurry away; set a mouse/rat trap last night and turned up with him today (WARNING, don't click this if you don't want to see a dead rodent): [more inside]

How to block dead rat stench from coming up through my vents?

Our downstairs neighbours are using poison to combat a rat problem. Our bathroom already smells putrid from a dead rat somewhere in the vicinity of the relevant air duct. While the rats rot downstairs, can I block off the vents in my apartment to try to reduce the odour? If so, how can I do this safely, cheaply, and effectively? [more inside]

What is going on with my cat?

All of a sudden, he keeps looking up at the ceiling as if he sees/hears something. He just started doing this a couple weeks ago, and has done it several times an hour since. Can metafilter supply me with a more plausible answer than what googling has lead me to? So far my top leads are yahoo answers posts about ghosts, so I'm sure y'all can do better. Has he just lost his little cat mind? [more inside]

Killer kitty

Our cat, who in the previous 6 years has not brought home any animals, has brought home 3 dead rats. Ew! What's up with that? Why now? Should we put a bell on him? Is he fighting off a rat infestation? Should we do anything about it? [more inside]

Removing unwanted animal residents in our attic

We live (rent) on the second floor and attic of a house. The attic is finished in such a way so that there are crawlspaces on each side of the gable, which we use for storage. Something, presumably a squirrel or other manner of rodentia, has taken up residence either in the recesses of one of these crawlspaces or between the floors and scratches away annoyingly, most often at 5:30am. Is there anything we can do to drive the thing away* or should we just invest in a humane trap?

* We have a cat and two dogs live below, so things that emit animal-annoying frequencies are out of the question.
