From Gospel to Rock and Roll

My current project involves a little research into gospel music history, how it influenced rock and other genres, and musicians who crossed over from gospel to rock (like Sam Cooke). Can anyone help me out with any part of that? It would be difficult to acquire a book right now, so online reading is best. Have read some articles but still looking for something substantial.

Hearing Protection for Musicians, or, It's Too Loud and I'm Too Old

I am a bass player, and I have recently returned to playing loud, noisy rock and roll after a 4-year hiatus from the stage. I have always eschewed earplugs on stage, on the grounds that they keep me from hearing all of the nuance I need to hear to play effectively with a group. But I ain't no spring chicken anymore, and now I recognize that the real reason I never wore earplugs before, even in mind-bendingly loud bands, was mostly out of misplaced machismo. I can tell that I have lost some hearing over the years, especially in the ear that usually faces the drums, and I want to avoid losing more. I have tried using cheap, disposable foam ear plugs, but I am not satisfied with the sound quality I am getting with them. Are there better ear protection alternatives out there? [more inside]

International Music Request

This question has certainly been asked before but I am looking for great rock music from different countries, the place matters not (except US and Canada). What I really want though is more musical exposure of bands who I can then listen to and research outward from them. In other words, I am not looking for exhaustive lists of bands, rather, geographic diversity. The more different countries, the better. [more inside]

What are some examples of live versions of popular songs that are more well-known than their studio counterparts? Perfect example of this is Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me," which is most often heard as the At Budokan live version. [more inside]
