Renting a car for southern CO road trip - do I want an SUV?

I'm planning on flying into Denver and doing a solo roadtrip for a few days in southern Colorado, but I'm pretty unfamiliar with the territory. Should I get an SUV, or is that unnecessary -- especially given that I've never really driven one? (Itinerary suggestions welcome!) [more inside]

Long car rides and family get-togethers

I've planned a day-long road trip to spend about a week at my cousin's farm. My husband and I with our 4-1/2 year old daughter are planning to drive 10 hours to get out there. We'll stay a week. My mother lives another 4 hours from where we'll be staying. We decided not to tack on a trip out to see her and so she invited herself on our trip. I'm of two minds about this. [more inside]

Mapping for road trips for groups

Husband, son and I will all be embarking on an adventure soon across the US. Our dogs will be joining us in their own grand quest to mark everything we see. Assume for this we have no deadline, no end date, no....scary pressure hanging over our head. We have some general ideas of what we want to see, but we need a way to start marking up route possibilities, and sharing them with each other (well, the dogs don't care much - if there are national monuments of dog parks, they have no idea about them). The problem is finding the right tool/app to do this. [more inside]

I need some fabulous 72-hour vacation ideas from DC! RoadTripFilter: Philadelphia to Omaha. What's fun to do?

I'm bringing a car to Omaha in very late June, early July. Dates are flexible. We're planning to take 2-3 days of driving split between two people. What are the best routes in terms of scenery and attractions to do overnight along the way? We are staying for about a week and flying back one-way to PHL. Ideas for what to do in Omaha are also needed. At least some of the activities in or around Omaha should be suitable for people under 21, although they don't all have to be. Museums, parks, sciency stuff, and hotel and restaurant recommendations all welcome. Assume an upper limit of $200 per person per day for 2-3 people, although this is fairly flexible both directions.

Help planning route from Boston to Vegas

I'm leaving at 10am tomorrow from Waltham, MA and driving to Las Vegas. Stressing over the weather. I plan on taking it slow...driving maybe 8-9 hours a day and not at all after dark. I've never driven in bad weather so I'm really nervous. If I take Northern route I'll be in snow in Denver and if I take Southern route there are severe thunderstorms (and poss tornadoes?) in OK and TX by Wed. and Thurs. I'm driving alone and this is my first road trip. BTW I have a Nissan Rogue that will be packed full. Looking for advice planning route home...details appreciated! Thanks!

National Lampoon's Nebraska Vacation

Some friends are road-tripping from Seattle, WA to visit family for a couple weeks in Lincoln, NE starting next weekend, and trying to save money where possible. I'd like to give them a gift of a meal or something else they can use along the way or during their stay in Nebraska. They are 2 adults, 2 kids around 10 (give or take) and an 18-month-old. Critique my California Road Trip/San Francisco Visit Itinerary!

In one short month Mr. Bruno and I are traveling to California (from Boston) for a long overdue vacation. I am hoping you can help me make it even more awesome (it’s been years since we got to travel without a family visit or a wedding to attend, so it’s already pretty awesome). I have seen this thread, and used it to plan parts of this trip, and would like some specific feed back as well as general recommendations, if you’ve got ‘em. Accomodations and number of nights are set, but activities are not. Things we like: eating, walking/not-too-long hikes (especially in parks/gardens), people watching, unusual museums/unique visitor attractions, farmer’s markets, bookstores, unique food shops. Most of our vacations are just walking around, poking into places that look interesting, and eating. [more inside]
