Googling "weird camel thing" surprisingly proved fruitless

I am trying to remember the name of a fantasy book I read around 1990 or so. It was written for pre-teens/young adults, took place on another planet, involved a longish journey on some sort of camel-esque creature and the development of a relationship between a trainee warrior-type and some sort of novitiate. Any ideas as to what this book could be? [more inside]

What is the longest developed stretch of road in the world?

I am curious to know the longest drive you can take where you will not see any undeveloped land, such as farmland, forest or field, on either side of the road. The route does not have to be one single road, although I suppose I would be curious about the longest individual developed road, as well as the largest developed area(s). This question came about because I was thinking about urban sprawl and mega cities. This question could also potentially be phrased as what is the longest/widest urban area in the world, although I imagine it could also be possible to have a string of smaller municipalities all linked together along a major road. It could also be possible to have an urban area that snakes around in multiple curves, as opposed to being a straight shot across (or up or down).

Hybrid vs. Cyclocross bikes?

Back in the day, there were two styles of bikes that I was aware of – road bikes and mountain bikes. Now there are road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, and cyclocross bikes. This is very exciting – as more options – but also subtly confusing. [more inside]

I want to ride my bicycle... but I don't have a bike

All my good friends are getting bikes and going on rides on local green lines/green ways, or having group rides. While I had only kind of wished I had a bike before, I rented a bike at a local park and went on a 14 mile ride with a couple of friends yesterday, and now I really want one. I also know now some of the things that I definitely want in a bike, that I would have thought didn't matter before. How to select one at a reasonable price?! [more inside]

Bike & crosswalk rules and behavior in Somerville/Cambridge, MA

What is the legal and/or good behavior when you are riding a bike and come upon a pedestrian crosswalk (no lights) and want to cross the street? What about as a rider who is riding on that street, and there are other riders right behind you, and you see the person trying to cross the street? I'm in Somerville, MA, very close to the Cambridge border. [more inside]

What are good coop games for tweens on iOS for a road trip?

What games would tweens (11-13) like to play together on an iPad or coop with their own iPods during a road trip? Are there other non-electronic games you recommend for road tripping? We have Rubberneckers, which is fun up to a point, as is the alphabet game. There are only so many DVDs they will watch. They've both got iThingies, but I'd like for them to interact with each other and/or us rather than be nose-deep in their own screens, oblivious to the world. Family time and such.

Two Canucks Lost in New York!

Help me plan a relatively carefree (yet amazing!) trip to NYC! From Ottawa (potentially by car) in January or in a later month. Looking for a place to stay that won't drain bank accounts and sights to see with someone who has never been. Bonus points if anyone can suggest a fun route there and back. Time limit: I'm only going for a weekend.

American Roads are more dangerous that British Roads?

In my Internet peregrinations I came across this: 'In 2010 there were 32,788 road deaths in the USA (Source: DfT). This equates to 10.6 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 3.1 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2010.'. I am trying to equate these statistics with relevant land areas vs population.
