How can I tell if an apartment building has pests (e.g. rodents or roaches)? Am I being unrealistic to hope to find a place that doesn't? [more inside]

Roaches! Not for the first time, not for the last time.

We have a roach infestation in our new apartment. Ha ha ha. What's a good gameplan? Is it weird that I've accepted it? [more inside]

Are there kitchen trashcans that have decently sealing lids?

We are currently having roach problems in our apartment, and sadly the monthly visits by our landlord supplied pest guy are not having any effect. We are being ultra-careful about leaving out food/water, but this seems pointless when there is a trashcan in the kitchen containing perfect roach food! Our current trashcan has a hinged lid but it doesn't seal. I've tried to look online but can't find any trashcans specifying that they are air/bug tight. Do they exist? [more inside]

Bedbugs, roaches, deep paralyzing renter's remorse. Oh my.

I'm PERHAPS overly paranoid about renting an apartment. I need some advice from sane, non-traumatized people to make sure I take all necessary precautions while also not rendering myself homeless by default. [more inside]

Infestation Risk

I'm looking to rent a studio or one bedroom apartment in Arlington, Virginia within walking distance of the Courthouse or Clarendon Metro stations. After a week or so of pretty intense searching (dozens of calls, two days spent wandering around) I finally found and visited a place in my price range (under $1250) a 10 minute walk from Courthouse. Unfortunately online reviews (20 or so) are largely (80%) negative and frequently mention roaches and bedbugs. How do I decide whether I can look past this or not? How do I broach the topic with the management? [more inside]
