Help me give my husband a 40th birthday he'll never forget

Good "experience" gift for my geek husband's 40th birthday? My husband turns 40 in a few days. We already have too much "stuff" and he's not very materialistic in any case. We're both geeky techies, and he loves music. Last year I bought him a great guitar, and he's already taking guitar and voice classes.

I want to buy him a great "experience" that he wouldn't treat himself to and that will be special and memorable.

We don't have any kids and we do go out fairly often - although I'm not a night owl so it tends to be quiet restaurant meals etc. We already have a 3 week trip planned over the holidays, but that is to visit my family in England.

I'm thinking something involving vehicles and speed - he likes to drive, but we live in Chicago and don't travel much by car (and have a small city car in any case). He did some flying in his youth - in another life, if he had had better vision he would like to have been a fighter pilot. He's a slightly reformed risk-taker, and I'd like to give him a taste of his reckless youth in relative safety.

One thing I thought of was maybe a session in a race car at a track .. I've done some searching on this and found some packages sold at the Chicago Speedway but I don't know how good they really are and it quickly gets very expensive.

My budget's a bit flexible but ideally I'd spend less than $1000 - but if I were to go more than $200 or $300 I'd want to be sure it was really worth it.

His birthday's coming up in just a few days, but as long as I have the gift planned I don't think it's important that he "redeem" it before then or before our UK trip.

All thoughts and ideas welcome!

The Dare Essentials

I am thinking of organizing a "two-dollar dare" party and I need simple dares that can be performed in front of a lot of people, and achievable right there. Props are fine, as is the use of another person. So far, I have things like, picking your nose, licking someone else's foot, peeing in a pair of adult-diapers, letting someone slap you hard, letting someone give you a haircut, simulating an orgasm. The idea is that if the people at the party want to see it, they can up the "bid" to a double-dare ($4) or a triple-dog-dare ($6) so I am looking for a good selection of tame dares and rather more outrageous ones. Can the hive mind help me?

One fever is more than enough fevers for us

Indian health concerns: typhoid fever and dengue fever. Yes, you are not my doc. So, the short of it is: I am heading to new Delhi late tomorrow. My girlfriend, who I'm visiting, got dengue fever three days ago. She's feeling a bit better, but, obviously, better relative to the f'ing dengue fever.

Problem #2 I took three of the four pills (live vaccine) for typhoid fever, and was going to take the last tomorrow, on the schedule. And realized ten minutes ago, on this cross-coast bus, that I had left that little box in my office.

So:

dengue is spread by 'blood products' while she's still feverish. What does this mean in kissy terms.

Next: how screwed am I with my 75% vaccination against a quite serious illness? And can I grab another dose in a cvs tomorrow? Cost would obviously be thought of relative to hospital stay / death (jk, I'll never die)

Finally, any departing words of advice for a first-time Indian visiting his so abroad?

Small business failure.

What happens to the owners when a small business fails? Let's say that Mr. X started a small brick & mortar business. He had a reasonable business plan. He had a bit of savings, but also got an SBA loan as well as a bank loan to finance the rest.

Let's say that Mr. X sets up shop. He works hard preparing, he hires employees, he buys materials, he engages a marketer and advertises and markets the business, opens the doors and... customers just don't come. Let's say he gradually lets the staff go. Still few customers. He tries to find another business that will buy the business he set up. No takers. His hand is forced, and he liquidates the assets and closes the doors. Since he doesn't have a job, he can't repay the remainder of the SBA or bank loans.

What happens next to Mr. X? Does Mr. X lose his home, his car? Does he have to declare personal bankrupcy? Can his business be bankrupt without the risk of him losing his personal possessions?

How can someone wishing to start a small business insulate themselves against the risk of failure? Actual anecdotes about starting a small business and failing would be appreciated.

(Note: I don't own a business -- this is all purely hypothetical.)

What's the best way of dealing with a housemate with BPD who is concerned by me spreading cold-sores to her?

What are the chances of getting cold sores about two weeks after a friend of mine had an outbreak of cold sores? And how should I deal with the concerns of my housemate (who has BPD) who thinks I may spread it to her? Today I went around to a friend of mine's to help her with some housework. My housemate was a little concerned that since my friend had a cold sore about three weeks ago, that I might catch it and bring it back into our household. I tried to assure her that (a) I wouldn't kiss my friend, and (b) that even if I did, the chance of getting a cold sore was slim, since the blister was long gone. Is this correct, though? If I did kiss my friend, and she hasn't had a blister for a couple of weeks, what would be the chance of getting a cold sore? Also, I did eat dinner over there and used her cutlery. What kind of a risk did I run by doing that?

When I returned, she was livid that I went over there in the first place. She didn't trust that I hadn't kissed her, and said that her boyfriend wasn't happy either, saying that it would affect him if she got cold sores.

Now, this is where the question gets a little tricky. My housemate has Borderline Personality Disorder.

In the heat of the moment, I told her the chances for her getting a cold-sore from this were zero percent (probably a mistake to say that), and I told her that I wasn't happy with her boyfriend for saying it was a valid concern, because it wasn't. That was also a big mistake for me to say that. She's in her room now.

I was wondering what would be a good way to approach the situation from here on in, and what would have been a better way for me to have approached the situation from the start?

Any good job ideas for quadriplegics?

I am a 52 year old quadriplegic (C-4,C-5 incomplete) former oil and gas senior executive.
Until recently, I've been able to both support my family and afford the post-Cobra health insurance premiums available through our Texas High Risk Pool.
I'll will soon be overtaken by the myriad of expenses now beginning to snowball.
Does anyone know of any legitimate stay-at-home jobs for people like me? While I can leave home occasionally for meetings, etc., realistically I need to find something (computer-based, in all likelihood) to do from my home. I would like to supplement my income by a minimum of $25,000/year.

Flush in the face = Give up the bottle?

A somewhat recent NY Times article explains the connection between ALDH2 deficiency and throat cancer. Request for perspective on level of risk and appropriate response in extended. The article explains that people who become flush in the face after drinking are likely to be ALDH2-deficient, and are thus at higher risk for throat cancer.

But it is also possible for an ALDH2-deficient person to develop tolerance to the flushing effect, such that no flushing appears.

Questions:

1. If a person suspects that he or she belongs to the population just described (ALDH2-deficient with no signs of flushing), will the patch test (applying an ethanol-soaked patch to the skin for 15 minutes) described in the article be of any use? Could such a test be performed and interpreted by a non-professional at home, and if so, how?

2. Even if the risk of throat cancer is increased through drinking, is that enough cause to seriously curtail one's drinking, or even abstain altogether? What is the prevalence of throat cancer in the general population?

3. Is the risk increased significantly if the person is a former smoker (i.e. having quit)?

4. Are there any measures one might take to lower his risk, besides limiting his or her drinking?

Can unplugged irons cause fires?

Can unplugged irons cause fires? One of my housemates (Housemate A) observed that my other housemate (Housemate B) put the clothes iron back into the cupboard without letting it cool down. How dangerous is this? The iron rests upright on a wooden shelf, in a confined space. Lets say that immediately after ironing his clothes, Housemate B puts the iron on the shelf, and unknowingly knocks the iron over while closing the cupboard door. If the iron falls face down on to the wooden shelf, how much of a fire risk is this? Assume, for arguments sake, that it's a standard iron that was used on the highest setting (but is unplugged when put in the cupboard).

How can a risk calculation have a false positive?

How can an estimate of a health risk (eg 1 in 500) have a false positive? Yesterday we were told we have a very high risk of Down Syndrome based on the Nuchal translucency test. We are currently doing sume reading and biding our time, waiting till we can have the maternal blood test done for a better estimate of risk. (I'm including our current situation here to clarify the question, but am not looking for discussion on the various other tests that are available, just the weird stats question below)

Wikipedia (and other information we've come across) says "Nuchal scanning alone detects 62% of all Down Syndrome with a false positive rate of 5.0%"

But if your risk is provided post-scan/screening test as 1:50 or 1:30,000 (or whatever) - how can you have a false positive?. Or are "false positives" only generated when the risk is very very high - eg when the measurement is such that doctors say a pregnant woman has a 50:50 chance, or nearly 100% chance of Down Syndrome? For that matter, how does it claim to detect 62% of cases - again, when they only identify a risk? (If you say someone has a 1:50,000 chance, does that mean you have identified that case if it turns out to be true?)

I'm sure this must be some statistical rule but it doesn't make any sense to us!

24 hours, no more no less? I doubt it.

Examples of suspiciously round numbers that have, in all probability, been fudged up or down? Extra points for cases where those numbers can be safely discarded in favour of a different, more realistic figure. We just had a refrigerator delivered and we are advised to let it "stand" for 24 hours before plugging it in. The interwebs confirm this as a widely invoked rule of thumb, the rationale being that in a fridge transported horizontally, oil from the compressor seeps into places it doesn't belong such that the fridge mustn't be switched on until the oil has time to settle back into the compressor. If plugged in too soon, the oil tends to block refrigerant lines (negatively affecting cooling performance) and could potentially cause the compressor to fail completely.

I accept this explanation, and am willing to adhere to the 24 hour guideline just to be safe, but I find it incredibly unlikely that a full day (not one hour more or less) is really required for this process; instead, I would suppose the "true" time it takes would be 12-18 hours at most -- potentially far less -- with the remainder added as a safety margin and to account for idiosyncrasies across brands and models. Instead of providing an accurate figure with each model, a nice, round, extra-safe number that's easy to remember is promulgated by the entire industry.

Another example that springs to mind is the maximum recommended dosage information for non-prescription drugs (e.g. not to exceed 1000mg every 4 hours), which must be set well below the "true" toxic dose for safety reasons and to compensate for the low granularity in the "adults" and "children" doses as opposed a more accurate dosage based on body mass (e.g. 300mg per kg per hour). This fudged number -- say, 40% of toxic for a body mass 1 standard deviation below the mean for an adult or child -- would probably be further rounded down to a multiple of the quantity of drug in each tablet. Alternatively, the tablet size would be adjusted to be a factor of the various fudged dosage guideline(s).

So my question to you: which fudged numbers have you come across? Why do you think they are fudged? What factors would need to be taken into account to determine the corresponding "true" number? Anecdotes where you have personally shown the fudged number to be so? Thanks!

Gedankensexperiment

People say condoms are 95-98 percent effective, if used correctly. How does that figure compare to other risky things, like commuting to work, riding a motorcycle, riding a bicycle in traffic, etc?
Here is my understanding: If randomly chosen couples each have sex 100 times (or if me and her use a condom 100 times, in parallel universes) then the number of pregnancies observed, divided by the number of couples, approaches a certain number, as the number of couples goes to infinity (presumably 2 or 5.)

If we were to replace “two people having sex with a condom, for X amount of time” by “two people riding on a motorcycle, for X amount of time” and “get pregnant” by “get injured” how would that final number change? Ditto for “riding a bike in traffic”, “skateboarding in traffic”, and similar things.

I'm just trying to get a feeling for how significant 95-98 percent really is, so I can take that into consideration. Of course the more important question is how much do I like her, but for now, Hit me with the statistics! Thanks Hive mind.

Recently, during a movie, my boyfriend pointed to an actress and said “Hey, that’s a really nice color. I think it would look really nice on you.” And my reaction involved mentioning hair damage, fading, and a fear I’d never get my natural color back or that dyeing my hair might cause grays (I have none, and all my family members dye their hair and had a bunch of grays at my age). I love my natural hair color and texture, and if I could guarantee that after dyeing my hair, it would be exactly the same as before, I’d do it. So I tend to stick with what I’ve got because I’m afraid of what I’m going to get. I'd like to loosen up a bit.... When he asked me why I don’t wear heels above 2”, I cited how higher heels misalign the spine and can cause everything from back issues to foot ailments, in addition to lack of comfort. When he said he wanted to get drunk together last week, I mentioned that I’d been drunk once but I hated the feeling of being out of control, so I don’t do that anymore. Typical.

While we love each other for many reasons, this affects our relationship a tiny bit. One, I can rarely intentionally make him laugh. And I so want to. I don’t lack for trying. The relationship is solid. Despite my sort of serious streak, he said he “wouldn’t trade all the good that I am” for someone like one of his funnier, yet fickle exes.

I love to joke and make people laugh. I see myself as a silly, fun-loving person. He sees me as “about as silly and playful as a person [like me] can be”. Not a robot, but not exactly life of the party material. Friends and family have also called me serious. But I can be overly analytical. I’m careful. I weigh many decisions. I’m a curious sort, and a voracious reader and digester of trivia and information. On the other hand, I’m also sensitive, passionate, and emotional.

I’d like to let go and be more spontaneous, more lighthearted, funnier, and less afraid. I have a history of (social) anxiety and depression, which I have recovered from. But now I’m living in the aftermath of all that, and vulnerability is still not the easiest thing for me to affect after many years behind walls. I’m kind of a by-the-rules sort of person. I’m shy but that’s more of a result of my past and lingering fear, as I am an extrovert.

What has helped you? Anything from baby steps, tips, books, personal stories. I must note that telling myself stuff like "life is short, just start living now" only makes me feel frustrated because I want to but have this inability to let go.

I’ve spent a while searching and reading many related questions in the Ask archive, and will try some, but more targeted advice is extra helpful. Any direct responses can go to lettinglooseatlast@fastmail.fm

Risky yoga

What are some dangerous asanas? I'm interested in asanas that people are somewhat likely to hurt themselves attempting. I don't have anything against yoga (though I think it's somewhat riskier than t'ai chi)-- I'd like a dangerous asana to use as part of an argument about something else.

I'm quite aware in a general sort of way about the sort of precautions people can use to keep from getting hurt. I'm also aware of the temptations which lead people to ignore those precautions and the numbness which makes those precautions hard to apply.

Not Suicidal

What are some high risk, high urgency jobs that don't require a lot of physical strength? My strengths:
Staying calm and clear-headed in challenging situations.
No phobias, and not easily grossed out or disturbed.
Following protocol when it exists, finding solutions fast when it doesn't. Thinking on my feet.
Some computer skills. (Almost a given on MeFi, but I'll mention it anyway.)
Easily able to work long hours and night shift.
Enjoy risk.

My weaknesses:
Staying focused and meeting deadlines in non-urgent work.
I weigh less than 150lb, so I don't think I can be a firefighter, cop, or drill for oil.
I don't have a college education.

I would like to find a job that fits these strengths and weaknesses. Some level of intelligent work a plus. Good karma, i.e. benefiting others a plus. Room and board a plus. Good compensation a plus, but not essential.

Questions to notsuicidal@gmail.com. Anon because people seem to interpret it that way when I talk to them about it.

Should I cancel my health insurance and invest the money instead?

Is cancelling my health insurance and investing the money instead a good bet, or a foolhardy risk? I'm young, in good health, and have no chronic health conditions. And compound interest means that I'd have hundreds of thousands of dollars more at the end of my life. I'm currently paying over $200 a month for an excellent health insurance plan that includes doctor's visits, prescriptions, and low to no deductible for most things. However, I'm living more or less hand-to-mouth. I'm 25 years old and work as a freelance writer, which makes it very difficult to invest any amount of money -- there is simply nothing else in my budget I can cut. If I cancelled the health insurance or downgraded to an emergency-room-only health insurance plan, and invested the money instead, I'd have a few thousand dollars in savings a few years earlier, which would give me a lot more financial stability and flexibility. (Hey, I can buy a car / move to a new city / travel now!) Or, heck, I could just keep saving that money -- the effect of starting a few years early would exponentially increase the longer I left that money invested.

Now: I'm healthy -- I an ex-smoker and run frequently, and have no chronic health complaints, and haven't been to the doctor for an illness in years.

Looking at the problem in terms of risk or reward, I am currently paying $200 a month to guard against a (relatively) low risk of have to pay a lot more in the case I become ill. Now, if I invested the money instead, I'd be taking on that risk, but for a substantial payoff -- a few thousand dollars a year, which could become hundreds of thousands by the end of my lifetime. Essentially, investing my health insurance money guarantees me a large payoff, but I take on a risk of large expense.

Let's posit that I do get any medical help I need, I just pay for it out of pocket, but drift a little more towards poverty. Let's also assume that I'll do this for only two years, by which time I'll have saved a few thousand dollars and will be earning more money. And, remember, I'll have emergency room insurance, so if I'm hit by a car I'll be covered.

So: is this a foolish risk to take, given the payoff, or not? If you were to run this scenario ten thousand times, would you come out ahead, or would the house win? And given that I can only run the scenario once, is it still a good bet? If this were Deal or No Deal, would you take the deal?

A short descriptive title about bank problems.

I recently visited bankrate.com and found my bank has a rating of one star out of five. (There is no zero rating). Should I change banks? The bank is FDIC insured and I am well within limits of their max insurance. I started banking here eight years ago when they had a special promotion that said there would be no monthly service charges and no ATM charges for life - something I almost certainly wouldn't find if I switched. I have about eight thousand in my bank account now because I will be using it to pay taxes soon, otherwise, I usually would have less than two thousand.

So - should I worry about bank insolvency (like would my money disappear for several months until I get a check from FDIC?) or is a bank going insolvent with FDIC insurance not a big deal? Or is a one star rating not that much to freak out about?

I'm going to embark on a stompbox-building adventure, and I'd like to know how much one can mess things up. I'm aiming to make a Fuzz Face (not sure about the specific plan yet, any suggestions welcome). Also, if I can find an incredibly cheap delay pedal (I guess I'll trawl eBay...), I'd like to modify it to produce some good stutter effects. So, as far as experimenting with this... what is the fact that's preventing 9V from running straight into an amp and blowing it up? I'll probably be testing on a Princeton 112 turned way down, but what are the risks and methods of reducing them with this stuff? Are people using tiny amps to test things?

Thanks

Apple with a bitter taste.

Macbook warranty blues. I asked a question after I managed to mess up an OS X update and am thankful to report that all is well and all photos of my newborn are safe and well (and backed up!). However..
After the calamity I thought long and hard about purchasing Applecare but after reading forums decided it was actually worthwhile. Call me ignorant but I have been surprised to discover that I cannot now purchase Applecare (my macbook is a few months out of the initial 1 year warranty) to extend the warranty to 3 years from the date of purchase. Are there any other solutions to this problem? Ie. 3rd party warranty providers? I work as an underwriter and if a firm is unaware of any claims or circumstances not yet reported then I can decide to take the risk moving forward. Is it beyond Apple to look at my Macbook, then confirm it is not on its last legs and thus provide backdated cover to the date of expiry of the initial warranty? I have also read that EU law supersedes the initial 1 year warranty, and that the manufacture has an obligation for more than period of time - though not sure how usable this tract is in practice. Any suggestions? Should I sell my current macbook and buy a new one and hopefully not lose much more than the cost of the depreciation in the differential? Thanks.

Is it safe to live directly underneath a large number of radio and/or cell towers?

Is it safe to live directly underneath a large number of radio and/or cell towers?
My friend wants to move into a building where she would be living on the 20th floor (there are 21 floors) and all along the roof are a LOT of antennas. (This building is on a hill and is the tallest point anywhere around.)

Other mefi threads contain good, long debates about this issue but they are all from the perspective of someone living beside, rather than right below, the towers.

I don't know whether the antennas are radio only or radio and cell. From googling the building address I assume at least some are radio (since one result is a report of a company being cited for moving their radio tower from another building to this building without a permit). According to cellreception.com, there are no *FCC-registered* cell towers there, but that site says "The FCC does not require every antenna structure to be registered, and the map may or may not list all the towers in the area."

Thanks for your thoughts, pro or con, or any advice about researching building addresses to see what antennas are on them!

How to start-up a small summer lawncare business?

Hi MeFi! I'm a motivated college student who wants to do more than just work for the man to earn my tuition this summer. I've decided I want to start up my own lawn mowing business but have no real business experience whatsoever. To the entrepreneurs out there, where do I start? Is this a worthy business venture? If so, how do I aim for success? The business would be run by me and a friend. We currently have no supplies or equipment but have access to start-up capital to get things going. We are willing and able to do spring clean-up, weekly mowing, vacation mowing, dry fertilizing, aeration, and are open to more suggestions if it brings in the gravy. If this question seems daunting or a little too broad I apologize. I would appreciate even the smallest tip from your area of expertise whether it's how to market this, how to manage it, etc.

Should we obtain a business license? Bank-account? Cell-phone? How should we invest in marketing? And the biggest question of all, is this even really worth it?

Thank you very much!

Stranger, please pass judgment on our most intimate moments! So, my fiancee and I have been in a monogamous relationship for 8+ years, and the only method of birth control we use is condoms. Are we stupid? We've never had a break or a pregnancy scare, and only a couple of near slip-offs. She had negative effects from hormonal birth control early in our relationship, and I don't really mind condoms (not nearly as much as I mind the idea of her suffering for the sake of the raw-dog).

We don't cheat on each other, and we have enough self control to just hang it up for the night if we find ourselves without condoms. Are we still taking a huge risk of an unwanted pregnancy? Us getting a baby right now makes as much sense as us getting a walrus.

How to deal with the Water co. on liabilities? Attorney recommendation?

A water main leak was repaired in front of our house. Our facets spewed muddy water. Now possibly contaminated dirt is settled in the water pipes. Health and mechanical/structural risk of dirt and debris settled in water pipes? If, and how to remove? Where for water sample test? How to deal with the Water co. on liabilities? Attorney recommendation?

We have not had reliable, clear, sanitized water since a water main repair. This emergency water main repair took place directly in front of our house at late night. House is located on a dead-end street with no fire hydrant outlet to flush out the main pipe after construction work. Our water pipe is the nearest outlet from the site of repair.

The construction crew made no apparent efforts to prevent/stop dirt and debris from running into our house wide water plumbing. Muddy water spewed out of our sink and tub facets. When we called for water co. service, our sink and tub facets were used as outlets in attempts to flush out the water. "Rare but it happens" was the explanation, and "run the water until clear" was the advice. Some facets now run nearly clear, but some cold water pipes are clogged. Time to time, even a facet that ran clear water will run murky, I assume from dirt that is settled on the pipes. Unclogging specific spots probably is a simple task for a plumber.

My focus is to eliminate any health risk from the contaminants, and to eliminate current and future risk to the household wide plumbing and to any associated appliances like the water heater.

1. Is it possible, and if so, how would I remove contaminants/dirt/contaminants settled inside water pipes throughout the house?
2. What health risks do I face from dirt and debris trapped water in pipes? Ideas how to get a water sample test?
3. What structural/mechanical risks do I face fro having dirt and debris trapped/settled in water pipes?
4. How would I sanitize the entire house plumbing in contact with water? Who do I contact to get this done?
5. Ideas/advice on how to deal with the water co.? What evidence and how to document them, how to approach them, how to obtain specific construction related information and service records/reports from the water co., e.g. did they bother to flush out the pipe after the repair, how did they repair the main (to figure out how so much dirt and debris got into the pipes during construction.)
6. For safety. Attorney recommendations?
