Recommendations for converting a 35-minute DVD to discrete segments so I can post it on youtube? I have a 35 minute DVD of a music performance that I want to chop up into individual songs (six, I think) and upload to youtube. Please give me your recommendations on software that will do this. It's a local band and not copy protected. I've been trying to work with Auto Gordian Knot but I'm finding it a little more complicated than that name would seem to imply. Thanks for your help

What audio format for remastered Beatles listening on iPod only??

What audio format would you rip the recently remastered Beatles albums in for optimum iPod listening? Let's say you've got the recently released Beatles in Mono (or Stereo). Let's say you have to use iTunes and you only listen on your iPod, via Sony headphones or the car stereo. And let's say storage isn't an issue. What format would you rip them in? MP3 192kbps? AAC iTunes Plus? Apple Lossless?

I've seen parts of this question answered here, here, here, and here, but not specifically for strictly iPod listeners with something this good.

Maybe with just the iPod, you don't hear the differences anyway.

New car buying hell. Are we the only ones being told that the Toyota Prius price is MSRP PLUS expensive add-on premiums to cover their gouging? We have been told that not only do we have to pay MSRP (at one dealership, for example), as well as (they) demanding, no, FORCING us to buy Lo-Jack and Finishing Touch (a paint and fabric/leather conditioning/protectant) for an extra $1800+ bing. Is this happening everywhere? And is it Toyota or the dealers/ dealer co-ops that are controlling the supply, to keep prices artificially inflated? Pardon me, but is this another government boondoggle? Every place we go they seem to say they are out, but then suddenly they have 1 or two that appear a hour or two later or next day. Are there more of us out there, or are we just the mark?

FWIW-looking at a 2010 Prius IV in So. CAL. and do not have a "clunker".

How do I rip an entire CD to a single mp3 on a Mac? I have a few dozen CDs that contain interviews that I'd like to convert into mp3 format for archiving. Each CD contains a single interview, which is split into several tracks.
Speeding up DVD Shrink ripping on my laptop? I bought a new MSI laptop, which is otherwise powerful (Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz, 4 GB RAM, etc.). But ripping DVDs in DVD Shrink is about 3x as slow as on my old Dell!

How could it change so dramatically? Is this Vista related? I went from XP to Vista.

I tried turning on the "overleaving" or whatever feature in DVD Shrink; didn't help.

Ripping video from ISO

Is there a program to rip just the main video from an ISO file? I've been backing up most of my DVD collection to my computer as ISOs. Now I've started also putting them on my iPod. The only problem is with several of the movies I don't have the DVD any more (various reasons such as lending it out and such) and only have the ISO. Any good programs to rip just the movie without having to re-burn the DVD? I'd prefer the programs to be free, but it's not required. I also only want the movie, not any of the extras. I am already using VLC Player to play the ISOs so please don't just tell me ways to play the ISO, I want ways to rip from it.

Anyone still remember anything about the Epson Stylus 3000?

Print Filter(heh): I just bought a spandy-old Epson Stylus 3000 Big-A$$-Inkjet, and I have a couple questions about it that fairly persistent Googling failed to answer. It came with the network interface, but no booklet, and I don't know how to set it. I'm also going to want to set it up for Bulk/Continuous Ink, but Lyson appears to have stopped making a setup for that model. And finally, Epson used to have a bundled version of (I think) Birmy's Postscript 2 RIP called "StylusRIP", but I can't find any evidence that they still do, and I'm not clear whether they sold the software, or bundled it. Any graphically inclined typed got any pointers for me?

How to rip DVDs with newer copy protection?

How do I work around the newer DVD copy protection? Recently I tried to backup a DVD of Hancock to a hard drive via DVD Shrink. It failed with a CRC error at 8% into the disc (almost exactly where the movie starts). Handbrake also choked and showed encoding times that kept doubling indefinitely. The movie played from the actual disc mostly okay in VLC with a only slight hiccup at that beginning of movie mark. I saw at least one other person online who had trouble ripping this particular DVD.

I have heard some newer DVDs have better copy protection on them. I'm not totally sure this was the case with Hancock; maybe it was a bad disc. But in general, is there a good way to work around these schemes?

I'm on Win XP.

Several mp3s in my large collection are silent, or almost entirely so. Please help me find ways of detecting them automatically. I ripped all of my 1200+ CD collection using cdparanoia, and put them in storage. The files are now being served by a linux box running Firefly Media Server. For unknown reasons, some of the tracks have ended up being silent, or containing very short bursts of noise separated by silence. I've uploaded a typical example; it's supposed to be Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians – Oceanside.

What I'd really like is a script or command-line program that will scan an mp3 and indicate if it's mostly or entirely silent. It would be preferable if the process were fairly quick, as there are about 20000 files to scan.

BD-ROM import

How can I import blu-ray like I do DVD9? I LOVE backing up my optical media onto disk using any combination of DVD43, DVDfab, DVD shrink, etc., and then playing back with VLC and XMBC.

I bought this blu-ray drive. The only way to *watch* a blu-ray movie is through the accompanying (lousy) bundled software, though it does in fact work.

Is there any way to import the data to a 25gb iso like I can for a DVD9? And/Or any program that will cut out superfluous extras and reduce the filesize like DVD shrink or DVD fab?

An easy way to rip DVDs in per-chapter MP3s?

Is there an easy way to rip a video DVD to MP3, so that each chapter on the disc is a separate MP3 file? I have a bunch of DVDs of live music performances that I would like to turn into MP3s. I can get the audio out of the VOBs no problem, but splitting it into one-song chunks is a pain and I still have 20-30 DVDs to go through. Since the DVDs are (mostly) divided into one chapter per song, I was hoping MeFi might know of a Windows program or process that could automate at least the splitting and preferably also do the ripping and encoding.

divx? DVD? what?

I want to rip my TV Series DVD's and store the episodes on my computer (Windows 2003 or XP). Can someone tell me what hardware I need to do this? Just a DVD drive in the computer? I've found some software information, including this old AskMe thread, but updated recommendations would be helpful. I'm not going to share the shows with anyone. I just want to be able to watch a whole day's worth of these shows without changing discs in a DVD player or selecting episodes from a menu.

It's technically a gift for my BF, but I'm going to enjoy it too. He mentioned something about getting a divx encoder. Is that the same as the divx software or is it an actual drive to install?

Usually I'm not this bad with technology, but ripping DVD's or even burning our home movies to a disc isn't something I've ever tried to do before.

How should I complain about this?

Help me write a good complaint letter so I can get my $99 back. The billing department in my college failed to notify me that they changed their billing practices for the payment plan I use - a four installments plan.

In the past, when my financial aid passed, it respectively cleared the installments of my payment plan. This provided me enough time to gather enough funds, to pay what was left if my aid was short. It usually cleared the first three and I paid the last one.

In this semester when the financial aid passed, it was disbursed onto each payment equally, which left me with a due date in the beginning of the semester.

Now, had I known this, I would've saved and not spend cash on silly things during the summertime, but the problem is that I didn't know AND I wasn't notified about it when I signed up for the payment plan. It ultimately led me be late for three of the payments and pay $99 in late fees, which I believe belong to me. I have never received ANY late fees in my life (yes, I am young. I know. lol)

My question is, what arguments can I use to write a good complaint letter, besides the obvious inconsistency with their past practices. Is this legal? Is there a policy or an act that forbids things like this from happening? From an ethical point, it seems very unfair but I do think that our MeFi hive will have a better idea than me. Please help!

Ripping CBCsports stream

Is there an easy Mac OS X way to rip a video (plus audio) stream of a hockey game tonight? I would like to "record" the stream of Pittsburgh vs. Vancouver off of cbcsports.ca tonight and watch it on my Powerbook (Power PC 10.4.11) on my flight tomorrow.
Any ideas how to rip this stream? I've looked around, can't find a simple way to do it.

Alternately I have a Slingbox, so if there was a way to record my feed on that I could do that too. But there doesn't seem to be a way on the Mac side of things.
Split Pants

How do I stop ripping my pants? I need to buy new pants, all of the pairs that I currently own are more or less unwearable at this point, and all for the same reason: Each and every one of them has torn in the exact same spot, directly between the legs. Since no one wants to see my taint, it's time to get some new covering. I'd like to prevent this problem in the future, however, so I was hoping that the hivemind could help me.

Information that might be useful: I'm 6'6", and about 235 lbs. Although there's a bit more of me around the waist than I'd like, I'd say that I have a fairly average build. I've experienced this problem with all sorts of fits; loose or tight, it doesn't seem to matter. The brand quality doesn't make a difference, either, since I've had this problem with everything from Anchor Blue jeans to Armani dress pants. Rips seem to occur most often when I'm in the process of sitting down "Indian style" on the floor; as my legs stretch some fabric will catch on my knee and then pull apart the seams where the legs join.

Is there some style of pants that I can buy where this will be less of a problem? I'm tired of having to replace every pair of pants that I own less than two months after I buy them.

I want to rip a movie from a DVD to its elementary streams (.ac3 & .m2v). I can do this using the Stream Processing\Demux option in DVD Decrypter, but because the video is spread across several VOBs, I end up with several video files. So - I then have to rejoin these video segments, which I'm using the Join command in DOS for. It works fine but I'm wondering if there's an easier way to do this? I'm open to Mac options too.

I need a rather rare video tape copied to DVD or saved as a video file. I don't have the equipment to do it myself and the tape is out of print, only released in Japan, unlikely to ever be released on dvd, and still under copyright. It's official documentation of an American child actor's Japanese music career. It is my 'happy' tape because I always feel better after I watch it.

What is the best way to get this copied? Bonus points if it's cheap or free and/or local to Charlotte, NC. After he became famous in Terminator 2, Edward Furlong had a music career in Japan. His uncle was his manager.

The video is so hilarious, with Furlong singing Doors covers with a cracking voice. You can literally hear puberty set in over the course of the album. The video is poorly shot, covering his promoting of his albums to his fan club and on Radio Stations. I love it when his uncle starts bowing to a DJ so deeply that it borders on genuflection. The poor DJ just wanted to shake hands.

The ending of the video is god awful, a seemingly neverending shot of Furlong walking down a dark corridor in an airport, alone.

And just when you think it's over... they fade back in with the "Making Of The Video".

I love this tape and I watch is often because it's so unintentionally hilarious. I know it sounds mean, but I love it. I'd love to share bits on YouTube, but I have to get it off the Videotape first!

How can i get a copy of this ripped and burned to DVD or saved as video files? I'd prefer not to let go of the tape, I don't want to mail it off as I'm afraid it wouldn't come back. I'd like something local to Charlotte, NC if possible. It's under copyright, so I'm assuming the more legit places won't touch it.

Importing movie ISOs on a personal computer?

OK, so that's how to do it, but should I do it? Should I rip my DVD and/or CD collections to a media server and then import the computer - but not the original discs - to the US, if I were move there? As mentioned in previous questions, I'm currently looking into the possibility of a move from the UK to the US for a few years for a job.

Anyway, prompted by the recent question about how to archive DVDs to a media server, I figured I'd ask: should I archive my DVDs to a media server?

Let me explain - I have a fairly large DVD collection (~300 discs), nearly all of which are UK (i.e. Region 2/PAL encoded). Due to limited shipping space, and the fact that they'd not be compatible with most US players, I figured I might rip the contents onto my server rather than take the physical discs with me.

My concern isn't about the hardware (I already own everything I'd need), more about the legality and the (admittedly extremely unlikely) possibility of US Customs inspecting my personal effects and wanting about this large collection of movies on one of my computer hard disk [arrays].

Technically, DMCA legislation makes it illegal in the US to rip DVDs, while in the UK it's a grey area. UK law does not have a specific exemption to copyright law to allow personal backups (which these would be - the original discs will end up in storage until I get back to the UK, I'll not sell them), while US law does.

Where would this leave me, legally, in importing movie rips into the US (probably mostly DVD5 ISOs and XviD compessed AVIs), considering I own the originals in a different country?

For bonus points, how about exactly the same question, but posed around my approx 650 disc CD collection... :-)

Oh why oh why did I do that.

oh CRAP filter: I just waxed off a huge chunk of skin from my upper-lip and eyebrow. Help! I was waxing my 'stache and eyebrows as usual when I decided to go in for a second round to rip off some remaining hairs (oh how I wish I could go back in time and just tweeze them out). After ripping off the second application I noticed the skin I had just waxed looked extremely smooth and shiny (compared to the rest of my skin). Um, uh oh??

After realizing what I'd just done, I rushed to put ice on the skin and put some moisturizer on it. Right now I look like I just got burned twice badly on my face by a curling iron.

I've never had a problem like this before, and on hindsight this is probably due to my latest beauty regime of alpha hydroxy based treatment every night. Sigh.

The best part is, I have to be at work in a couple hours. Yay.

Besides the ice and lotion, what else can I do for my newly "super exfoliated" skin or am I too late? Anyone know how long it will take for my skin to uh, grow back? Is this going to leave a terrible scar?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks so much in advance!

Why is copying a DVD so hard? No, seriously.

Why is copying a DVD so hard? No, seriously. Just to get this out of the way, I don't need help ripping DVDs. I was just puzzling over two things -- how is it that a DVD is just a long string of bytes on a disk, just like anything else, but it's so hard to get them off? I know quite a bit about computers, but next to nothing about files and I/O and the bits of computing this relates to.

Specifically:

How do the film companies introduce stuff into a DVD which causes a $3,000 computer to choke, but my $50 DVD player happily plays it without question? Same with a disk that's a little scratched or worn.
What's the difference between the laser in the DVD player and the laser in my DVD drive?

Why doesn't the computer just read whatever bytes are on the disk, or at least, why isn't there a preference for it to do so? For instance, I was just trying to copy a VCD with Toast. It's a little scratched, let's say at about 20 minutes in, the video goes all artefacty and the audio is stuffed for a few seconds. But I don't care. I'll live with it. Toast, however, won't let me. It says there's an error and it can't continue. I'd live with the error if it let me just click "burn anyway".

I guess my fundamental question is, why can't my computer just provide me with an exact copy of every byte on a disk? That seems, to me, simpler than what it's actually doing. Then I would burn it back, and leaving single/dual layer issues aside, I'd have a copy of the DVD.

Why can't I rip mp3s?

For some reason, when I try to rip/import anything off a CD, all the audio on my laptop slows down to a choppy crawl. In the past few weeks, I've noticed that any time I try to rip something off a CD, be it with iTunes or any other program, the audio on anything else playing turns into an indecipherably slow and choppy crawl, be it an mp3, a website or whatever. I use a Toshiba Satellite. Any obvious culprits?

I have a dear pal with a coke habit that has driven him to homelessness. He is not a US-native; he grew up in pre-change Eastern Europe. He does have a green card. He has had trouble hiolding job and appears to have never received training in money-management issues either in the US or at home. I do not want him to die, which he will surely do this year if things do not change. What can I do?

Help me get my Deltron MP3s, My CD Will Not Rip...

For some reason my copy of Deltron 3030 [The Instrumentals] CD just will not rip to mp3 without serious artifacts appearing on the mp3 version. The CD plays fine on every stereo I have tried but will not rip on any of the Macs I have here at home. Anyone know where I might obtain a copy of the MP3 version of these songs hopefully for free since I already legally own the album and just want them on my iPod? Or on the other hand, anyone know how I might rip these successfully? For those who will ask... Upon entering the CD in my laptop CD drive it makes a bunch of noises that most CDs do not make upon inserting. Furthermore this CD takes a while (a minute or so) before apearing on the desktop and upon trying to import to MP3 in iTunes it takes about 3-5 times as long to import any of the songs, all the while making a boat load of CD reading noises.
