When was the Spanish printer Artes graficas del Rio in operation?

I have an old Spanish olive oil label. The printer's name/location, as they appear in fine print at the bottom the label, are as follows: ARTES GRAFICAS - DEL RIO - LUARCA. I am trying to determine the age of this label. Herminio Azcárate Campo died in 1944, but I don't know when he inherited his father's business, which was established sometime after 1891. The label can be viewed here. If I knew when this printer was in operation, I could get a better idea of when this label was in use. Any useful information on ARTES GRAFICAS - DEL RIO or Herminio Azcárate Campo would be appreciated.

Brazil trip questions

We're travelling to Brazil in late May. Where would you recommend for hotels in Itataia and Paraty? Is a pousada a good option? Plus questions about timing, driving, Salvador de Bahia. We're a group of 4, going partly for business in Rio. After work is done, we're thinking of renting a car, and spending 1 day in Itataia and 2 days in Paraty.

Do you have suggestions on where to stay in Itataia and Paraty? Should we consider a pousada? I don't know much about them aside from being told to check them out for lodging.

Also, work ends Friday, so we'll be doing this Saturday-Monday, returning to Rio at the end. Is the weekend an ok time to do this, aside from it being probably more crowded? Any traffic-related concerns?

Any other thoughts about driving in this Rio area? We'll have drivers who can do manual, although automatic would be nice, but I'm not sure if many rental cars have automatic given Expedia's offerings.

After we return to Rio, we're heading to Iguazu Falls, then to Salvador de Bahia. If you have general/specific ideas for Salvador, I'd love to hear about them. I believe we have lodgings sorted out, but suggestions are welcome. We'll likely stay 2 days. Thanks.

Help me make most of my 4 week stay in Rio de Janeiro.

Help me make most of my 4 week stay in Rio de Janeiro. I am 31 (male), and I telecommute for work from Europe. For work I just need to have a solid internet connection and my laptop, but I need to be able to work from 6am to 2pm when in Rio de Janeiro; I work for European clients.

I have decided to take advantage of my remote work and move to Rio de Janeiro for 4 weeks on the 26th of January. I'll have 1 week off on the 9th Feb, but in the remaining 3 weeks I need to work.

My goals are to start learning Portuguese (I speak Spanish well)), experience Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian culture as much as possible, and to make as many friends and get to know as many people as possible. All this without neglecting my work.

During those 4 weeks of remote work I was thinking to rent an room in someone's apartment to make my stay cost-effective, and to have a chance to meet as many people as possible. Do you think airbnb.com is the best site for the best or you would recommend other site? My main concern is having a solid internet in the place I'd be renting.

Also, can you perhaps suggest some ways of meeting people, some afternoon classes for example, portuguese lessons, language exchange events etc, I'm mostly interested in meeting Brazilian people, but I don't mind meeting expats either.

Will appreciate any advice!

Brazil for Awesome People

After finding ourselves in the unexpected position of having a two-week trip but no idea where to go on it, my boyfriend and I have decided to go to Brazil! Which is a gigantic country, so your help, opinions, and itineraries are much desired. Our original trip idea was to visit Socotra (dashed by Yemeni terrorism); our second-choice Madagascar (dashed by monsoon/cyclone season). I'd like to get a few of the same elements in Brazil that we were hoping to get out of those places:
- A feeling of otherness
- Natural beauty
- Interesting/good/unique food and drink
- Great stories to tell our friends and loved ones upon return

The trip parameters are:
- We've got 10 days, including travel time from NYC.
- We'll be there directly after Carnival, arriving the last week of February. (Is that a terrible time to visit, btw? Will everything be Lenten and morose?)
- I have a cousin who's living in São Paulo who is fantastic and with whom we'd like to spend at least 2-4 days at some point in the itinerary. It seems likely that we'll fly into São Paulo and do the cousin time first — good idea? Bad idea?
- For the sake of leaving no option off the table, let's assume money is no object.

A general idea we have (that's in no way set in stone) is to do a few days in São Paulo, a few days in Rio, and then a few days at either Iguazu Falls or at Paraty. I realize Rio and São Paulo aren't going to provide Socotra-level otherness and beauty, so that's where the Iguazu/Paraty comes in — are there other/better places to get in that away-from-the-usual feeling? (Sadly, we won't have time for a full-blown trip to the Amazon — will we?)

Will you share your Brazil highs and lows, itineraries, can't-misses, hotels, restaurants, tours, spots, wishlists, etc.?

Note that the "Awesome People" referred to in this post's title are you guys.

Should I visit Rio?

Brazil Filter: I'll be in Sao Paolo for a week in early February and would appreciate some hive-mind input on the trip. Details within. The trip is (very) preliminary research for a new book. My goal is to get some first-hand experience with the country, culture and business environment.

I'm arranging meetings now, and expect there will be holes in my schedule.

Here's my question: Is Rio sufficiently different from Sao Paolo that it would make sense for me to spend a couple of days there? And are there enough things to do that I could fill those scheduling gaps productively if I spent the week in Sao Paolo?

By way of background, I live in Asia, it's my first trip to South America, I'm traveling solo, don't speak Portuguese and money isn't an issue.

Thanks in advance.

Less than a week to spend in South America

I have less than a week -- but where? Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, or Buenos Aires? I have a maximum of five nights to spend in one or more of these cities in mid-July (I am aware that this is mid-winter in South America). How should I spend my time among them, seeing as how it is my first time to visit South America? My constraints are as follows:

1. I will be flying into Sao Paulo (GRU), arriving at 7 PM on a Sunday.
2. I can fly out of any of the three cities.
3. I don't speak any Portuguese and only speak a bit of Spanish (something I hope to rectify before the trip).
4. I'm not as interested in shopping as I am in partaking of the local cuisine, culture, and architecture.
5. I don't currently have either Brazilian or Argentinian visas, but I will be getting a Brazilian visa at least prior to the trip even if I am just transiting the country (for peace of mind in case something goes awry).

I've read other threads about trips to SP/Rio/BA, but they tend to be by people spending over a week in a single location. Given my time constraints, how should I split (or not split) my stay?

Your tips for safe traveling in Brazil?

Your tips for safe traveling in Brazil? My two friends (both women) are going on a trip to Brazil (mostly Rio de Janeiro). I'm rather worried about their safety...

Partially because I'm an overly-paranoid person. Partially because the movie City of God unsettled me (although I'm sure that's a bit like assuming Boyz 'N the Hood represents all of America). And partially because of the US State Department warning for Brazil (excerpt):

Crime throughout Brazil has reached very high levels. The Brazilian police and the Brazilian press report that the rate of crime continues to rise, especially in the major urban centers – though it is also spreading in rural areas. Brazil’s murder rate is more than four times higher than that of the U.S. Rates for other crimes are similarly high. The majority of crimes are not solved. There were rapes reported by American citizens in 2008...

I'm looking for specific tips for staying safe in Rio / Brazil. Areas that are safe, areas to avoid, prevalent scams. Also any general tips you might have for single women staying safe as tourists.

Plus, any anecdotes of successful safe trips to Rio might help to diffuse my anxiety about their safety.

Thanks for your help.

[Previous question note: I also gathered tips from this previous Rio question from 2005 and this question re: Sao Paulo.]

Big fan of Brazilian Baile Funk - Can you recommend me US baile funk? I am a big fan of Brazilian Baile Funk and have heard it since years and have been to Baile Funk concerts in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
Recently I have heard US baile funk - baile funk Brazilian style but obviously made in the US and with either English vocals or mixed English/Portuguese vocals.
Planning a Vacation in Brazil in March

Rio-Paraty-Sao Paulo. March 11-21. Recommendations? My wife just got a job as an Ivy League professor. I'm celebrating by taking her to Brazil for a well-deserved vacation. I have a few questions.

1) We want to buy a one-way flight from GRU to GIG on Gol airlines but I don't have a CPF or a CEP. How do I go about accomplishing this?

2) I've been to Rio, but I stayed at a friend's house in Botafogo. Should we stay in a Pousada in Ipanema or be closer to the Metro for the sake of sightseeing and going to Lapa at night?

3) How do we maximize our hammock time on the Costa Verde without getting bored? Should we stay in Paraty and take boats to beaches, or should we stay somewhere more remote?

4) Is there good Korean food in Sao Paulo?

Thanks for any help!

How do I get a broken Rio Carbon MP3 player fixed?

How do I get a broken Rio Carbon MP3 player fixed? I bought a new Rio Carbon few years ago. After about 6 months of use, it broke.

When I attached it to my computer to refresh rights to the music, my pc couldn’t read my player. And the player would shut down.

I tried using other computers but had the same problem each time.

Rio, the manufacturer, folded right around the time this happened.

Now my Carbon won’t even turn on.

So how do I get a broken Rio Carbon player fixed? I’m not as interested in a site that shows me how to repair it myself, as I just don’t have time (working college student). What I do want is a way to pay someone a reasonable rate to repair my player.

Staying in Rio de Janeiro for five days, starting this Saturday (Nov. 8). Forecast looks like a lot of rain and cloudy days. Looking for suggestions for activities not exposed to a downpour. I've been checking the weather forecasts, and it looks like rain rain rain. We were planning on sunshine, lying on the beach or by the pool, and walking around the town. What kinds of things can we do indoors instead? We're athletic mid-30s, we're not the tour-bus type but love to see sights, we enjoy good food and drink, and we can only do so much shopping. Thanks!

Despite the recent corruption scandals in Brazil, for the first time since the 1970s, the country is finally showing signs that it is worthy of comparison with its BRIC counterparts. Inflation, the bane of the 1990s, has finally been largely reigned under control, interest rates have fallen to their lowest in living memory, the Brazilian Real continues to rise against the US dollar and BOVESPA - Latin America's largest and busiest stock exchange - continues to grow from strength to strength. How do I, a 23-year-old Brit with extensive experience of living and studying in Brazil, fluent (verging on native) command of the language and a knowledge and understanding of the subtleties of Brazilian culture which never seems to seize to amaze my Brazilian friends, get involved in this exciting new arena?

I'm currently completing a Masters in International Business at a French business school rated amongst the top ten in Europe by the Financial Times, and asides from speaking Portuguese, I also speak Spanish and French. The time has come to seek out an internship - or, even better, perhaps - a job for next year. Ideally, I'd like to work for a British or European company with extensive interests in Brazil and I am certain that, with my credentials, I would be an asset to any employer.

What I want to know, Mefites, is what is the best way for me to realise this dream? Details of relevant companies appreciated greatly. I'm interested in all sectors of business and banking but, in particular, the energy sector, import/export and marketing.

Best of all is if I could, somehow, make some contacts!

Tickets to Carnival parade?

Rio Carnival Filter

We're attending Carnival next year and would like to know the best way to get tickets to the parade at the Sambodromo. We found a couple of options online:

www.carnivalservice
www.rio-carnival.net

...but the tickets are pretty pricey and I've heard stories of folks paying for fake tickets and not finding out until they get there. We expect it to be expensive but want to make sure we're getting the real thing.

I'd love to get some recommendations from folks who have been there and done it.

Thanks for any advice
Find me a software-free MP3 player!

GadgetFilter: Find me an MP3 player! Yes, another MP3 player question. I have been happily using a 5Gb Rio Carbon but now I need more capacity, the logical successor would be the Rio Karma but I'm looking for 40Gb upwards and also its not available new anymore.

My major criteria:

I don't want have to use specific software to upload MP3s (Yes, I'm looking at you, iTunes!) - the Rio Carbon shows up as an external hard drive in Windows and all the files can be dragged, dropped and deleted using Explorer - this makes me happy.

I only need to play MP3 and WMA.

Battery life - 20 hours would be nice, like the Carbon.

USB 2 (or faster!).

I don't care about:

Photos, video, radios, elaborate GUIs, coloured cases, white headphones, touch screens or fancy ad campaigns.

Where to stay in Rio (cheap-ish)

Rio accommodation suggestions? I'm going to be in Rio de Janeiro between Christmas and New Years', and am wondering if anyone has suggestions for a good place to stay. I'm looking for something on the cheaper side of the spectrum; hostel would be OK. I'm more interested in music and culture than beach, and am a single woman traveling alone, so safety is somewhat of a consideration. Either suggestions for specific places to stay or for general areas would be much appreciated. Obrigada!

Help me find housing in Rio de Janeiro!

I'm a student and will be staying in Rio de Janeiro for 1.5 months this summer and need to find an apartment! What are good ways to find a decent apartment (or room in a shared apartment) in Rio without being gouged? I'll be staying for about 45 days and very flexible about location. All I need is a simple room. My only requirement is internet, as i need to do work while I'm there. I'm happy to not be in the Zona Sul (ipanema, copacabana, etc), and in fact would prefer somewhere interesting like Lapa or Santa Teresa. Do you have any tips on websites or bulletin boards to look at? Most leads I've found seem to be geared towards wealthy vacationers and charge a fortune. Obrigado!
