Philosophically, I believe in eating a plant-based vegan diet. In practice, it has proven difficult, as we are so disconnected from the animals that we are consuming. The most difficult for me is giving up dairy. So HiveMind, please help me by recommending books and DVDs on modern -day factory farming , which will reconnect me with the animals I am consuming. I am hoping that by seeing their suffering I will be no longer be able to be complicate in their exploitation. I have Our Daily Bread on DVD, and have Earthlings on hold from the library. I see there is a series on Peta.org, called Meet Your Meat. But, I really want a DVD, I'm not trying to watch stuff on my computer. I have also seen the Got the Facts on Milk documentary, but I really what to have a visual connection between dairy cows and the production of milk, so that when I think of consuming dairy I have an image that would deter me from doing so.
We recently moved to a new house and our washing machine hook-up does not drain properly. Instead of fixing it, our landlord keeps being pushy about how we should just drain it into the state land behind the house. [more inside]
My friend is a fan of really crappy 80s and 90s movies. I want to buy him the rights to some piece of %$&^ film. Of course, I'd prefer it had some star quality (could just be John Belushi's brother or something). How much would something like this cost? How would I go about doing it? I don't suppose that there's an ebay style auction site where you could do something like that?

I'm a graphic designer, employed full-time with a marketing agency. Yesterday my boss said I have to take down examples of work I've done while at the agency. In trying to determine if I can legally show these samples, searching the web is providing conflicting info. Things worth mentioning (a) My portfolio specifies that the work was done on behalf of my employer (b) I never signed anything restricting the use of these images and (c) The images are of works that have appeared in public (stores, events, etc). Is there something "official" I can refer to that shows where the rights to these images lie, especially as they apply to a personal portfolio?

I just found out my 8 year old stepson has to talk to a justice of the peace about an incident that took place about a month ago. I am uncertain what his rights are in this situation. The incident was that coins rolled onto the floor. My stepson and another child ran after it. My stepson pushed the other kid so he could get to it first, and the kid bruised his eye. They were and are still friends. My stepson was suspended for three days. My question is: does he have to talk to the justice of the peace and can I or his mother be present? This is in Michigan.

We're all suffering from the Adderall Shortage of 2011 - even those of us who actually have legit prescriptions (raises hand!) whose work is starting to suffer as a result. I've read a lot of articles and still have no idea why the shortage exists - and at this point, I don't really care. I just want to know who to complain to. What agency/person/organization would be most "helpful" after receiving my thoughts on this shortage? This is in NJ, but it's a nationwide shortage, so, I'm sure other people need to complain too.

I came home to my ceiling leaking brown water this evening. After a few phone calls from me to the 24/7 answering service my landlord has set up, a maintenance man finally showed up. He deduced that the hot water pipes in the floor between my ceiling an my neighbor to the north's floor had burst. Meanwhile my counters, appliances drywall ceiling/wall/electrical outlets/lights and wood floors are soaked. The maintenance man said he turned off the water flow to the burst pipe, and said he would return tomorrow to ensure the walls/ceiling had dried, but I'm not comfortable with that response --- I feel that all of the waterlogged drywall/floor should be replaced and the appliances should be replaced. What do I do? Should I call a lawyer? Should I write/mail a certified letter to the landlord? I'd like action now, but feel like I'm being out by the wayside. Please help!
