I recently read a blog post / article written by a best-selling Amazon author who noted that after all of Amazon's small print, he was only getting about 20% revenue share on the sale of his work (comparable to the traditional publishing industry) rather than Amazon's frequently lauded 70%. Can anyone find the post / article in question?

A good friend of a friend completed production of an independent film earlier this year. They've submitted it to festivals and are just waiting to hear back now. Does anyone have some stats on how much revenue a typical independently-produced film can hope to make in the US and how much the most popular ones make? How do indie filmmakers actually make money?

I was discussing with someone a certain website, which they say has revenues of at least $20 million a year. They made a claim that by looking at the ad rates of the ad network the website is using, the number of ads per page, and the traffic of the website (via things like Quantcast; it's in the Alexa top 500), it is possible to make a rough revenue estimate without access to any internal data. Is this so? If so, what formulas are used?
