It's my T-shirt money and I want it now!

I bought a shirt through a well-known website for my brother for Christmas. He didn't like it, and on January 13th he mailed it back, unworn, to the shirt company's warehouse. On January 15th I opened up a help desk ticket asking when I should expect a refund, and was told I'd receive an e-mail when they had gone through their returns. It has now been more than four months, and I've bumped the ticket a few times. December 21 - I placed the order for the shirt.
January 2 - USPS confirms the shirt is delivered to my brother.
January 13 - Brother mails the shirt back.
January 15 - I open up the help desk ticket asking when I can expect a refund.
January 17 - Staff member says, "Once we go through our returns, you should receive an email."
March 13 - I bump the ticket.
April 5 - I bump the ticket again.
April 24 - I contact the company's Twitter account and they say, "Please try again and I'll let them know." I bump the ticket once more.

No replies to the ticket since the acknowledgement on 1/17. Honestly, all I want to know is: Did the returned shirt get there? Was there a problem with it? Will I get my money back?

It was about $20 + shipping. Would my bank (Wells Fargo) give me the $ if I dispute the charge in writing/at my branch?

All I got was his phone number-- how to thank him?

What generic thank-you gift (between $10-20) can I give to someone working in SF when the only contact information I have is their iPhone number? My purse was recently stolen (I'm fine-- it was a kid snatching an unattended bag on impulse) and the thief abandoned my wallet in a construction area. A 45- or 50-y/o-ish construction worker went out of his way to contact me and return it. Due to my own issues, I didn't make it easy for him, but he tracked me down-- woohoo! THANK YOU, KIND SIR!

Aside from paying it forward when I find other people's lost stuff in the future, I'd like to give him a token thank you for all the effort he went through. However, I didn't have any cash when I connected with him, and now the only contact info I have is his iPhone number. Cash would have been awkward anyway-- I'm young enough to be his daughter. I suppose I could do an iTunes card, but that seems fraught with the same issue. But this guy really did go out of his way, so I'd like to do something nice for him.

The only other thing I know about him is that he has an adult son, because he said something like, "Sure, my son is always losing his wallet." I also know that although his current job is in downtown San Francisco near the Powell BART station, he does not live in the city, and I don't know how long this construction project will keep him in SF (he is some type of contractor but I don't know the duration of his gig).

Any good ideas on ways to thank this man for his kindness?

Should I go back to school this year?

Should I go back to school this year? I know I should be figuring this out myself, but so far I can't... I'm 27, and I dropped out of college when I was 19 when I got married and had a baby. I'm divorced now and I haven't really had a chance to go back to school until now. However this is also the year I plan to expand my writing business, which is very important to me and will make me a lot busier than I am now. I don't know if I should do one or the other, or try to do both, because I'm scared that my efforts would suffer if I try to do too much. On the other hand, if I put school off another year and next year I am really busy with work, I might end up putting it off another year. I don't know...opinions please?

I lost my wallet. Someone found it! Is there any reason not to just go get it from them?

I lost my wallet. Someone found it! Is there any reason not to just go get it from them? I lost my wallet yesterday. Today, someone left me a voicemail telling me he'd found it. Yay!

In between, I cancelled some cards. I also called the police, to report the wallet was lost, I guess in case someone turned it in or whatever.

The cop I talked to told me that if someone calls and says they've found the wallet, I should ask them to take it to the nearest police station, and pick it up there. He said I should not meet someone who says they have found my wallet, because it could be a ruse where they rob me.

This seemed just weird to me. I can't really see why having someone's wallet would be a great occasion to rob them. I didn't bother to ask for a further explanation, since it didn't seem like an important issue at the time.

Normally, I'd just go get the wallet from this person. Mostly - I just want to go get the wallet, and meet the nice person who found it.
But now I'm wondering if there's any reason at all to take the cop's warning seriously.

(If it matters - I am in Toronto, a pretty low-crime city...)

How long to hang onto stuff after a friend breakup?

What are my obligations in holding onto stuff after a friend breakup? Particularly, with friends-of-friends? Some time ago, I went through a friend-break-up with one of my closest friends that I did not initiate, though I believe she perceived me to be at fault. She returned most, but not all, of my stuff through a third party, I allowed her to keep some stuff of mine that was used in the business we had been operating together. I attempted to remain friendly with our mutual acquaintances. With some people, this worked: with my acquaintances who were primarily her friends, it did not, and overtures of went essentially ignored. This would be fine, except that I still have some stuff in my apartment that belongs to them - stuff they either loaned me or forgot.

I've attempted to reach out, via email and text, to talk about arranging a way to get these things back to them, but have not had my inquiries answered. I suspect it's out of friend-loyalty to my former friend, (due to a convoluted email I received from at least one of them) but am not really sure.

However, the important part is that I don't know what to do with their stuff. (Some clothing and books). Under normal circumstances, I have a spot in my house where things-I-need-to-return go, but now, given that I've been unable to return these things, the pile is kind of unwieldy and is preventing me from keeping things I need to return to people I am still spending time with. This is really frustrating to me, and I want to get this stuff out of that pile.

So, what do I do with the stuff?

Data points:

I don't have the current address of either of the mutual acquaintances, so I can't just mail them. Also, I'm not sure to what extent I'm obligated to spend (admittedly trivial) money to ship things to people who can't be bothered or don't want to meet up to get their things back.

It could be argued that I should try to have this conversation over the phone rather than over email or text, but it just strikes me as a really unpleasant conversation that is likely to get drawn out, given the nasty tone of the last email I received from one of them. I don't want to engage in it. (Also, I've tried to call at least one of them and it has rung through, with no return call)

I have a ton of books and not a lot of bookshelf space, so I don't want to put them on my own shelves. If I put them in storage-space boxes, I'll probably never find them again. Same thing with the clothes - I don't have unlimited clothing-storage space, and would rather box them along with my own stuff I don't want to wear right now, but if I do, I'm likely not unboxing them for years. I will definitely not want to go through storage boxes to hunt for these people's things if they show up and want them back.

If these things were my own, I would have stooped them by this point. But because they belong to someone else, I am really unsure of what to do here.

TL; DR: I've tried contacting these people to get them their things back with no response. How long do I have to hold onto their stuff, and how obligated am I to keep it readily accessible?

Does my accountant have to give me a copy of a past tax return?

Is my accountant obliged to give me a copy of a past business tax return if requested? I need to get copies of some tax returns (USA) from the past few years for my business (variable partnership). I've requested them from my accountant (who used to work for a large firm but has been independent since 2008) but it is like pulling teeth. He has been stonewalling me and taking his time.

Why didn't I have them anyway when I signed them? I used to be in a relationship and it was my SO at the time who signed the tax returns, not me. We are no longer speaking or on good terms.

Does anyone in the know have any advice for me on what to do?

Sometimes you just gotta say...

Thinking about going back to school, but I have some questions about things, and hoping people can help me and answer them. (Information and questions inside.) I'm hoping to go for a graphic design program at Seattle Central Community College, since my job hunt in IT has been, uh, fairly fruitless (more than ten years working for a bank has both stunted some of my skills due to in-house software that no one else uses, and the bank itself seems to be kind of a poison). I also put in with North and South Seattle CC. I have no degree, and actually failed out of college in 198*mumble*

I've sent through my application to the community colleges and filled out my FAFSA paperwork, but to be accepted to the graphics design program requires a portfolio review, and while I'm pretty good with photoshop and indesign and doing layouts and such (I was always the one tapped to do the department newsletter because I 'had an eye' for making them look good, for example, and I did a lot of the training documentation because I could make them both look good and make sense), the traditional arts are... not something I am good at.

So questions:

1) how long will it be before I hear from the colleges about further paperwork I might need, or do I have to push the processes even after putting in the applications?

2) As someone self-trained in a lot of these things, is that a significant handicap? The portfolio requires an essay about 'strengths and weaknesses' and part of me thinks that mentioning that I'm self-trained and don't know what I don't know I need to know is the kind of self-insight that might be helpful, or it might be a killer.

3) should I not worry about the application to the program for a bit, but get some of my general education credits in first, along with some basic art classes, just to have some background?

4) where can I get a decent pre-review of a portfolio before submitting, so I get some ideas about how I'm doing? I have a deviantArt site that I've posted things on, but I don't really know how to search these things out.

5) In my 40s, am I crazy for trying this?

6) am I overthinking this? Or should I just listen to that little voice inside me that quotes "Risky Business" at me?

Thank you.

I found an iphone. It's locked. No carrier info on the casing. I want to return it to the user, or turn it into the carrier. What do I do? According to Wikipedia, the model number A1303 means it's an iPhone 3GS, built in 2009.

I do not want to keep it. I have a nice Android phone that I'm happy with. No need for another. But is there any way to either get the device to tell me its carrier or give me access to its owner's info while it's locked?

Has there ever been an account of a group of black Americans choosing to return to Africa and how they fared in doing so? I'm looking for stories about how blacks born in America dealt with and adjusted to the change in culture if they returned to a country in Africa.

Books, documentary or whatever are welcomed, preferably with the account occurring in 1960 or later.

Just upgraded to my first smartphone last week. On Verizon and have been a Verizon customer for about ten years. Of course I find out that starting Friday, Verizon will be offering its double data promotion again. But that puts this offer squarely within my two week return/cancellation window. My question is: is there any chance that Verizon would let me take advantage of this offer now? Has anyone had experience finagling this sort of thing with them? What are some good negotiating tactics in case they are reluctant?

Return the parcel at my own expense or keep the doubled-up items?

Should I return these items from Urban Outfitters like the store has requested and pay $60 for postage or keep the items?
As I see it they've helped me out by sending another lot of the same items since the parcel appeared to be lost in the post, but what it boils down to is that I - the customer - will have to pay extra because my parcel took longer to arrive to expected. I live in Australia, and I bought an order of clothes from Urban Outfitters a few weeks ago.
It was sent off but appeared to be lost in the post so I emailed UO and asked what they could do about it. They elected to send the same items over again, and requested that I return the original parcel if it does end up arriving
Both parcels arrived, but to return the parcel would cost me around AU$60 - around US$60. This is almost half the cost of the order itself!
Return shipping is free within the United States but not for myself.

What do I do? Do I keep the parcel (dishonest I know but I get the feeling they aren't too fussed about it because they haven't sent me any emails regarding it, and I don't see them putting time into researching whether parcels from weeks ago have arrived or not) or do I send it off?
I don't really have a need for doubles of all these pieces of clothing though.
Is that even stealing?

Does filing a 1040x (amended return) increase your chances of being audited?

Does filing a 1040x (amended return) increase your chances of being audited? I recently used a program to do my taxes for the first time in 2010. It mistakenly only uploaded one of my two brokerage accounts (I like to blame the program, could've been my mistake) for my return. Also, I got a 1099 very late and it was not included. So long story short on my first efiled return (using program) I showed a capital gain overall and did not have the 1099 listed. My correct return should show a capital loss and the 1099 as income. When it is all figured out I think I owe less than 100 dollars. So here is the question, should I file a 1040x with all of the correct information or is that just likely to trigger a full audit? Have you every had experience with a 1040x? What would you do? I am currently planning on sending it in with a brief explanation letter, but wanted to see what the metafilter community thought. Thank you for your time. Have a great night!

In the name of frugality, is this air return on my furnace efficient, or should I cut out the wood and replace with something allowing more air flow? ~650 sq. ft. 2 floor apartment (built ca. 1920s). It's heating up in Texas and I'm wondering if the makeshift vent for my furnace/ac air return is allowing enough air flow. With regard to furnace size, the label on the side says:

Heater Amps
208/240V
1PH
60HZ

I have no idea what this means. Here's what it looks like, holes about 1 inch dia.

Do I claim rent in Ontario when the reported income clearly could never have covered it?

I am filing tax returns for a number of prior years. One of those years was spent renting an apartment, but having almost no income whatsoever to claim. Rent was paid through a variety of means (read: help from parents). It was one of those years. Do I claim the rent paid? This is in Ontario. Is the imbalance between income reported and rent claimed going to be a red flag of some sort? Does the fact that I'm on some landlord's books as having paid a certain amount mean that I should claim it, whether I'm able to show the income or not?

Would claiming rent with such little income on the year not be worthwhile anyway? I don't have the forms in front of me, but it seems that the provincial credits will add up regardless of the reported income, so we're potentially talking about a not insignificant sum. Given the option, though, I'd probably choose to take the simpler path and not mention the rent paid at all as long a this isn't omissive to a fault.

How do I return this item and be a good citizen in the process?

I bought a "new" comforter at Target that is really a used Bed, Bath, and Beyond comforter. What are my options? I was in Target on Saturday and noticed a comforter in the bedding section that was the only one of its kind. It was in a Target comforter box, however the picture on the box didn't match the pattern of the actual comforter. (I could see and touch the comforter through the box.) I looked all over the box and there was no obvious sign that this was a return, but there was a sticker and a black mark on the side of the box. The box stated that there were pillow shams included and that the comforter was 100% cotton. So I bought it, and they charged me full price in accordance with the sign on the shelf and the barcode on the box, $89.99.

I got home and opened the box and took out the comforter. There were no shams included, and the comforter had clearly been used because the tag was completely frayed (I can't read the washing instructions at all). Otherwise, the comforter is in quite nice condition and I don't see any flaws.

I went online to see if I could find out more about this comforter because if it's used and does not include all the pieces I certainly don't want to be paying full price for it. No luck finding it on Target's website, so I searched for terms describing the colors, and up came an ebay auction which lead me to a cached Bed Bath and Beyond Product page. The comforter turns out to be 100% polyester, and their cost lists it at $39.99.

So someone probably tried to pull one over on Target by returning a product that was not theirs and succeeded. Then I bought the thing and gave Target my money, so I am clearly the loser here. I want to return it to Target but what should I prepare myself for? I have my receipt, and I could repack it in the box and act like nothing's out of the ordinary and return it just because I don't want it, but what if they don't take it? What if they accuse me of trying to pull one over on them with a non-target product? Or what if they do take it and put it back out on the shelf? I don't want someone else getting duped. I would also like to know what their policy is for marking products as returns, but how do I do that without giving them more info about why I'm returning the product? How much information do I share with them when I try to return it?

New shelter dog is making me bonkers. Help!

My new shelter dog is making me bonkers. What do I do? Three days ago I adopted a very cute, loving, 2 year old male beagle from a local rescue organization. I live with a roommate who has 2 male cats (one adult cat, one three month old kitten). Beagle comes over with his foster parent to check out my apartment and meet the other animals. At that time, beagle was very docile and calm, and didn't display any aggressive behavior towards the cats. I had been looking to adopt a dog for about six months, specifically wanted a beagle because I lived with one for a couple of years in a different roommate situation. Apparently, that beagle was exceptionally out of character for a beagle - quiet, calm, low-key.

Day 1 of adoption goes fine, beagle is still getting the lay of the land and not making any sudden moves.

Day 2 and beagle is in full effect. He is house trained, but has been having lots of marking incidents. He marked four times, once in my bedroom, in the bathroom, kitchen, and front hallway. It is very hard to catch him when he does it, but I was able to catch him once and took him outside, but then he marked again later. He was neutered 2 weeks ago, so perhaps the hormones are kicking around in there, or maybe it's just habit. Beagle is also very willful, charges around the apartment smelling everything, jumping up to get to food, eating food off the table, and he chases the kitten around as if it's a rabbit. This is, of course, very distressing to my roommate.

Day 3 - more chasing, more peeing, crate training is going slowly, but lots of crying and howling when he is in there for more than 5 minutes. When he does get let out, he goes nuts in my room and scratches at the door and runs and bangs into the door tomake a loud noise.

Beagle is cute as could be, but clearly he needs tons of exercise to keep himself occupied. I'm worried about the chasing of the kitten and the marking behavior. I'm also just wondering in general if this setting is not the right place for him.

Please don't pile on about how terrible I am. Believe me, I already feel terrible for considering returning him. For instance, right now he's curled up in a little ball on my bed and all is right with the world. But I know the training is going to be intense and I don't know that we'll ever get to a happy place where 2 cats and this beagle can all coexist happily and I don't want to leave beagle crated all day while I'm at work. Clearly staying in my bedroom won't do it either since he bangs at the door and scratches. Oh, and I don't want excessive beagle noise and howling to cause any issues with the neighbors and landlords.

What do I do? Do I keep trying with the hope that this will work? What if it doesn't and more time passes and then I have to return him? I don't want to wait so long that we'll be too attached to each other. I feel like a horrible, rotten, person, the type that adopts a shelter dog and then returns him. At least the shelter will re-home him, this i know for sure.

Please help with any advice. Thanks.

Help me get my deposit back!

Exlandlords not returning deposit and won't return calls. I have no copy of lease. Is there anything I can do? My shady ex landlords will not answer or return my calls regarding my deposit. They were sketch enough that I have reason to believe that are purposely ignoring me and will never return it. I never got a copy of the lease despite multiple reminders (they kept saying they'll give me a copy but never did). It was month to month rent plus a deposit and I moved out after 1.5 months even though I paid for 2 months due to the weird living environment. It's been 1 month since I moved out and 2 weeks since my paid months ended. I know they have 30 days to return my deposit. I have been calling just to check in and ask about it but they ignore my calls. I know it was a stupid situation for me to put myself in-- yes lesson learned. But is there any way to fix the current situation? I have no written document and this is in California. It was a couple renting out a room in their house but I did sign a lease. Do I have any legal backing in this? Is there anything legal I can even threaten them with so they'll at least respond? Its only $300 so it's not a terrible amount. I would still love the money back because I'm a recent grad trying to make ends meet but it's not worth spending hundreds of hours and money on legal fees either.

Are there any legal avenues I can take? If not, can I report them or advertise somewhere so other people won't suffer the same fate (they seemed nice in the beginning and had me fooled). Or should I just chalk this up to costly experience?

How can I get an Israel passport?

How can I, a non-Israeli Jew, get an Israeli passport? I qualify as a Jew under Israeli's law of return. I'm wondering what the requirements and time line would be for me to get an Israeli passport? From what I've read if I move to Israel I would automatically become a citizen? Do I need to prove that I'm Jewish? Then after that could I immediately apply for a passport? Would I have to live there for a certain length of time?

Exactly what steps are required of me before going to Israel and then after arriving in Israel to acquire an Israel passport?

Returning a game to Gamestop as defective for a full refund?

On June 26 I purchased the video game Puzzle Quest 2 from Gamestop. While playing it thus far, I've experienced three rather substantial bugs: these two, and this one, the last of which has utterly destroyed my enjoyment of the game. I still have the receipt and everything that came with the game in 'played but otherwise perfect' condition, and I want a refund. Gamestop provides a system for exchange with a second copy of the same product in the case of scratched/broken discs, but given that I expect to find these bugs in all copies of the game currently on the market the only remedy I'd be interested in would be a refund or store credit for the entire purchase price. Gamestop's return policies do not seem to allow that remedy for opened merchandise, but being in Massachusetts I believe there's such a thing as an "implied warranty" that cannot be disclaimed, and would force Gamestop to rescind the purchase... although I may need to go to small claims court to see it enforced.

Does anyone here have any experience in getting a refund from Gamestop under similar circumstances, or advice on how to do it? I'd consult with a lawyer, but not for a thirty-dollar dispute.

Broken chairs your body conforms to...

Help me return an expensive but defective chair that I ordered online. I ordered a desk chair from a reputable online store. A component in
the chair failed, making it unusable. I was sent a replacement part,
which I installed. The process was not difficult, but it required a
tool I did not already own ($25) and it was time-consuming.

Alas, the replacement part is defective as well. It fails in a
different way, but the chair is just as unusable. I'm as sure as one
can be that I followed the instructions I was given and that the
failure in the replacement part is unrelated to the installation
process (i.e. it was faulty when it left the factory).

I have communicated my intention to return the chair to the customer
service rep I have been dealing with, but he is waiting on "approval"
for the return.

Should I expect a full refund and refuse to eat the restocking fee the seller claims will be assessed on all returns in its T&C?

Should I expect the seller to cover the cost of shipping?

Should I dispute the charge with my credit card company if the seller is uncooperative?

If so, what steps should I be taking now to ensure that I prevail in the dispute?

If it matters, I have had the chair for fewer than 30 days (which is
the "return window" stated in the seller's T&C), and more than $1000
is in play here. The restocking charge is 15% of the purchase price.

Please feel free to relate your experiences when returning an
expensive but defective item, especially if you purchased the item
online.

Sorry if this is a little stilted and vague; I have tried to minimize identifying details.

How do I make the best of a bad puppy situation?

Bought a puppy. Fell on hard times. Cannot take care of this dog right now and can't figure out what to to do. Help me feel less awful about this. Anon solely because I feel like such a terrible person.

I bought a puppy I'd been researching for years. I was laid off the very next day. For whatever reason (guilt, humility, who knows) I felt an obligation to the breeder and the puppy to keep her, thinking that maybe my newfound free time would be more of a blessing than a burden for the both of us. Well, simply put, with the pup's separation anxiety and my own stress from the unemployment has led to this absolutely terrible mix of frustration with each other.

The first week and a half I tried to grin and bear it, but it's become too much and I find myself stressing out way more than I should be and leaving all of the responsibility with my partner - who is less than thrilled (it should be noted I moved in with him temporarily because of my state).

I have been in contact with the breeder this entire time but I haven't mentioned my job loss or the stress. The pup also has an unforeseen health issue that might lead to complete blindness - something I wouldn't have been prepared for even if I hadn't lost my job. The breeder has already mentioned trading my pup in for one that doesn't have the health problem (what!?), but that isn't what I'd want at all. Things just hit the fan, and fast, and this poor pup is the last one that deserves any of this.

I've given the dog her final shots, she's got toys and all of the other necessities, but it would be another few weeks until I can drive her back home. I'm concerned that even if things settle down a bit before then that her health issues are still going to be an issue for me, and "trading" just seems wrong, especially considering the health issue is hereditary and might possibly develop in the other pups.

I've read several forums that insist that the breeders are going to be understanding if I want to give her back, but I'm still worried. Have you ever gone through something like this? Are you a breeder who has dealt with something similar? What are some things I can do in the meantime to help both the puppy and I deal with our sudden life changes? And finally, is it going to be even worse for her to go back home (both her parents and a brother will be there) two months after the fact or would she be okay? I don't like having to stretch this out, and at the end of the day I'm looking out for her best interest and not my own (as terrible of an idea as that probably is).

And bonus points for any little things I can do for my partner to thank him for really coming through and picking up my slack while I'm in this funk and out of funds.
1 - informed the right people at CDG when the case didn't arrive, got a case number and a packet and all that. They said it would be at the hotel tomorrow.
2- Next day, nothing, called Air Canada in France - they said it would be there by the afternoon - on the plane from Toronto RIGHT NOW. Fine. Afternoon comes and goes, nothing. Call Expedia and inform them about it - they try to deal with Air Canada and but shot down, AC will only talk to the bag owner.
3-Next day, call, give case number, the whole thing - agent claims ignorance of the previous agents assumptions, says it should be there by the afternoon. It is not. Call again, mention the heart medication my BF is *running out of* and the fact that we'll be moving soon. Again give the phone number and the hotel name etc. Said our case was moved up to urget - It'll be there! by! Morning!
4-Not there! Angry call now, words like "legal action" are being thrown around, agent says she knows nothing about a case being marked "urgent" and this is the first they've heard of it, but the package is here in Paris and should be at the hotel by 6pm.

It's now 11 - no package. Called made at 6 got hung up on.

I need to know, short of showing up at the offices, if there is someone higher up I can call or talk to to get this straightened out? I'm stressed out - we're leaving soon and every day has been spent preoccupied about the case, My BF is trying to get emergency prescriptions filled (so far so good, but like, his 500$ suit was in there -that he got pressed so he could take me out on the town in Paris and now were wearing the same clothes for 3 days in a row), and my vacation is more or less ruined and I pretty much never want to leave the house ever again. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?
