I'm finally out of school and in the working world, and now in the midst of trying to orient myself I'm trying to figure out if/how I should sock money away in a tax-deferred account with either TIAA-CREF or Fidelity. Should/can I try to figure this out myself, or should I find myself an advisor?

I was looking around for information on long-term investment planning and I ran across
this page, which says that after adjusting for inflation, long-term stock market returns are only 1.9% before taxes. The whole site seems to advocate this sort of really creepy gold fetishism that's been popping up lately, so my natural reaction is to dismiss it. But I still have doubts, and this plays into my anxieties about whether retirement savings is worthwhile at all.
Help me debunk this? (Existential crisis inside.)

Do I need a (fee-based) financial planner, advisor, or tax accountant? Recommendations for one in San Francisco?
I'm almost 30, almost debt-free, and feeling out of my depth as I try to figure out what to do about non-retirement savings.

I'm looking for recommendations on where to open a new Roth IRA. Looking for something with low fees and index funds. I could put in a chunk of cash if need be, but it would be great to find one with no minimum if I commit to a certain amount per month. Who have you all been happy with when it comes to customer service and ease-of-use?

Does one reduce risk by investing in mutual funds held by different groups? If I invest in an S&P 500 index fund with both Fidelity and Vanguard is that better than just going with Vanguard? Or is the SIPC protection such that I need not worry about such things?

How can I start saving for retirement when my career will likely take me from the USA to New Zealand? I wish to benefit from the tax-free nature of a saving scheme like the 401k plans, but I do not expect to spend all that much of my career (or lifetime) in the USA. Is there any way to move 401k savings to a similar scheme in New Zealand without losing it all to the tax penalties for early withdrawal? Are there any cunning alternatives?

If you had US$100,000 drop into your lap (I wish), and you were employed and debt-free, how would you put it to work to make a bigger nest egg or retirement fund? How would your strategy differ if you had high or low aversion to risk?

InvestmentFilter: So I'm permanent
now at work, and have to pick a 401k option. I don't think i'll be there for many years, and cashed out the last time I had one. (But then again, i'm older now, and 70 is only 31 years away). What do you guys suggest for a 1-3 year timeframe, 401k-wise, given the fluctuating market?
(If I need to, I have absolutely no qualms about cashing out again, and have never had much faith in the market at all, in general.) [more inside]
