How do I get that first post-college job?

I just graduated college in May with an English degree and a 3.7 GPA. I am looking for my first job. I'm looking for tips on cover letters, resumes, letters of inquiry, and perhaps fields I've overlooked. I haven't even landed an interview in my hunt so far so I'm ready to ramp this up to get some results. Extra information about my experience, my fields of interest, etc. in the paragraphs to follow. Quitting first job after 2 weeks, do I tell potential employers?

I just graduated and got my first job. It's outside of the city and the commute is much longer than I anticipated (and the salary is much lower than standard, and I generally dislike it...), so I'm looking for a closer (and better) job. Since I've only been working for a few weeks, do I mention my current job to any potential employers? [more inside]

Hire Me

What blogs / sites make you say "I want to hire this guy!". What is it about those sites that makes you say this? If and when my next employment search comes up, I would like to have a web presence that gives prospective employers a window into my work, thoughts, outlook, etc. I am looking for blogs that do a great job at selling the author to potential employers. I am interested in content but also the sites presentation and functionality. I am more interested in business related blogs rather than designer / portfolio types sites, but will take all comers. Blogs that incorporate photos of the author would be a bonus. Help me find examples of great personal salesmanship on the web.

How dumb should my resume go?

I've been a professional musician, music entrepreneur, and music educator for nearly 10 years (I'm in my mid-twenties). I have a day job in public school teaching for the fall, but I need a job in the "in between" - ie the next 6ish months. However, because my resume is very heavily music biz and music influenced, I'm having a hard time getting taken seriously in any regular retail or restaurant job interviews. I've tried dumbing down my resume with decent results, but do I need to go dumber to actually get a job? [more inside]

What is the best way to read good resumes in a field?

I understand that people post their resumes at places like Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com, but you have to be an employer and pay for the privilege of reading them. Is there an easier way for regular folk to see what good resumes look like for people applying in a certain field? (I'm thinking of USDA/agricultural work specifically, but also wondering in general)

Should I list this job in my resume?

I am a 13 year IT professional who was laid off from my job back in early 2008. After months of unsuccessful job hunting, I did the stay-at-home-dad thing for over a year before I landed a job as an office manager at a small store. (well cashier, but I also do light book-keeping, fix the computers, do the payroll, AP, AR, etc...) With the economy (hopefully) picking up, I want to update my resume and get aggressive about job hunting again, but am hesitant to put this job in my resume. Will this hurt or help? Your thoughts are appreciated! [more inside]
