Hey Mefites, here's my question:
My younger sister, mother, and I suffered years of abuse at the hands of an alcoholic stepfather - physical, verbal, etc. When we were younger, my sister and I were absolutely focused on getting the fuck out and did, getting scholarships to great schools, thankfully. My mom, not so much. She is no longer in a relationship with him, but they have been living together for economic reasons - she needs his disability paycheck to pay the bills (all of which are in her name, including the mortgage payment.)

I'm in the Bay Area legal tech field. I'd like a job in SF proper, as my commute to Mountain View is brutal. My skills are legal tech, meaning mostly managing projects and programs related to the legal field in the tech industry. However, I feel that I have management chops for any industry, and I've worked in the start-up atmosphere before. Where should I post my resume? My LinkedIn is beefy, I've posted on Monster and Indeed. Any other ideas?

I'll try to make this brief. I recently turned 23, and due to a combination of drugs and depression since getting out of high school I have essentially no work experience. This makes responding to job postings very frustrating and humiliating as my resume feels like a complete joke.

I started my own business and instead of the five month gap on my resume, I wrote it down as it it were only a three month gap. I told myself that in those two months prior to starting the business I was looking for business opportunities (as well as considering full time work opportunities and also considering not working at all), and that this was in fact how I found my current business model. Do you think there is something wrong with this?

Where in a cover letter or resume can I make it clear how tech savvy I am? I am a middle-aged woman and I am afraid that potential employers will see my years of experience and bypass my resume as my field is becoming very techy and many older professionals in the field are way behind the curve.

Two dumb questions about cover letters:
1. If I really do not have the name or title of the person to whom the letter is addressed, what is the preferred salutation?
2. When applying for a part-time job, should I explain in my cover letter that my current job is also part-time, if that's unclear from my resume?

I am a 13 year IT professional who was laid off from my job back in early 2008. After months of unsuccessful job hunting, I did the stay-at-home-dad thing for over a year before I landed a job as an office manager at a small store. (well cashier, but I also do light book-keeping, fix the computers, do the payroll, AP, AR, etc...) With the economy (hopefully) picking up, I want to update my resume and get aggressive about job hunting again, but am hesitant to put this job in my resume. Will this hurt or help? Your thoughts are appreciated!
